Is meteorology a good degree?

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Is it?

No.
You're too late. The NWS has been relying increasingly on computer models to make forecasts, and all human forecasting will be phased out within a decade. I assume there's a similar situation for other weather forecasters.

I see. What degree do you recommend for a young wanna-be scientist?
>>
>>8823139
There are no jobs left in the wanna-be fields. Basically everything these days is dominated by Applied Math/Computer Science/Physics.

Every STEM degree at my university requires at least one programming course.
>>
>>8823145
What I meant to say is: what's a trendy STEM degree nowadays, asides from the ones you just said?
>>
Meteorology is cool, but like >>8823126 said, everyone uses supercomputers for prediction now. If you learn scientific programming (older languages like FORTRAN and C), you can help build climate and weather models that will be run on massively parallel/HPC systems. These days it's all about making increasingly accurate and longer-term predictive models because individual human forecasting is notoriously unreliable.
>t. work in climate modeling

I would recommend something like epigenetics, bionformatics, or astrophysics if you want to do something cool. All of those require programming and computing though.

Thanks for the reply, and thanks for the suggestions. Will look into bioinformatics, sounds pretty cool.

We lack meteorologists.

And we don't have really good meteorologists, mens that push the boundaries of science while at the same time being Einstein level charismatic.

It has the potential for that tough.

If you can dual degree met and CS you are going to find many opportunities senpai

A derivative of one of the above. Geomechanics, optics, cognitive science, Chem engineering , etc
>>
OP here, now that I've seen all the possibilities, I'll probably opt in a Physics degree.

meteo is quite interesting anon
It involves some cool phsysics like fluid mechanics, boundary layer processes, wind friction, solar radiation.
But yeah a lot of it is computer modelling, aka: uncertainty, resolution, time scale, data quality, etc

t. half a year till msc in hydrology

It sure looks like a pretty cool subject.

Most degrees can be good if you use them cleverly. Except Women's and Gender Studies. Fuck that noise.
