i would argue that either math or reality are the foundation of physics.

i mean, its definittely related to physics

but ts related to physics in the same way the bible is related to the lord of the rings

>In the book, Nagel argues that the materialist version of evolutionary biology is unable to account for the existence of mind and consciousness, and is therefore at best incomplete. He writes that mind is a basic aspect of nature, and that any philosophy of nature that cannot account for it is fundamentally misguided. He argues that the standard physico-chemical reductionist account of the emergence of life – that it emerged from a series of accidents, acted upon by the mechanism of natural selection – flies in the face of common sense.

>Nagel's position is that principles of an entirely different kind may account for the emergence of life, and in particular conscious life, and that those principles may be teleological, rather than materialist or mechanistic. He stresses that his argument is not a religious one (he is an atheist), and that it is not based on the theory of intelligent design (ID), though he also writes that ID proponents such as Michael Behe, Stephen C. Meyer, and David Berlinski do not deserve the scorn with which their ideas have been met by the overwhelming majority of the scientific establishment.
>>
>>9032785
The argument more or less falls apart when you remember that consciousness gives a distinct evolutionary advantage.

Is IQ even real?

It doesn't feel like it is. Everyone I meet in the street (regardless of skin color) has a terrible layer of depth and intelligence that a number can't possibly quantify.

I feel like it's all ultimately a matter of wealth. People like Carl Sagan get to grow up around evolutionary novelty, but people like Negro #4223232 get to grow up around violence and crime.

>>9032312
Read the literature. IQ is not what you think it means, but it is definitely real.
>>
>>9032312
IQ is real, but it isn't exactly a perfect system to calculate how intelligent you are.
>>
>>9032312
IQ isn't a measure of intelligence. And the reason people like Carl Sagan will be remembered longer than some random nigger is the same reason Tom Cruise will be remembered and you'll be forgotten after you die.

They have more people looking at them.

Do accomplished academics share the same mindset as those of say US Navy Seals? It's the toughest training in the world, but it's not something even steroids would help you get through. Not too much is known about Seals as they try to maintain "Quiet Professionalism." Are there parallels with top academics or is it all just cheap recruiting propaganda?

>>9032168
The only thing that school has in common with the navy seals is memorization. That's it
>>
Pushing yourself physically is different from pushing yourself mentally. For example a kid with ADHD has little problem with physical activity but greater difficulty sitting down and studying for an hour.

The main difference is probably the amount of "decision making", if you have to run 10 miles you make a few decisions about your route, psych yourself up, then there are lots of small "decisions" henceforth as you decide where to step next and such, whereas someone engaged in an intellectual task will be constantly learning new things that are more difficult than map reading.

SEALs have to learn a lot more than map reading of course, however a great deal of their time is spent in physical training while a top tier university student will be studying and working on projects pretty much all the time.
>>
Not really, SEALS are all about teamwork and accomplished academics are all about fucking over everyone else to get ahead.

been any experimental studies which prove that natural selection is necessary for a healthy population such as certain ideologies assume?

I could imagine that eventually even in a population lacking selection eventually selection will happen because negative traits could potentially build up
21 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Hard to test since it's difficult to have a population with nothing selected for. Anyway, without selection drift would gradually screw up the population.
>>
>>9031878
>drift would gradually screw up the population.
Can you go further with this? In more detail?
>>
i dont know if it's "necessary", but there is no stopping it. a genetic code will either die via genetic disease, be depreciated by new positive traits in another genetic code within the same species, or killed off by another species.

i dont know enough its time for me to stop postering

Wtf
collegehumor claims that you can have babies after 35 without any major problems. All the fertility scare is just propaganda.

This is a science board. You're asking a medical question. Nobody here can answer you.

Ask a doctor.

Better yet, study fertility yourself. Get your own answer. Stop asking someone to give you a yes or a no.

Hey /sci/, /co/ here. We were arguing about this when this issue of Transformers first came out but everyone's kinda given up since then. It still bugs me though, so maybe you nerds can help us nerds.

How the hell fast does little green robot here need to be moving in order to maintain orbit around a fixed point on earth at five light hours away? And for extra credit, is this kind of zoom lens even fuckin possible?
18 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>9030999
If it's in orbit then it's not accelerating.
>>
assuming circular motion, speed is equal to (radius)*(speed of revolution)

(5 light hours)*(angular velocity of the earth)
5*60s *299 792 458 m/s *2Pi/60*60*24s=65 371 411 m/s, which is about 20% of the speed of light
>>
>>9031016
ups apparently I can't type in a calculator lol the real answer is 6 540 457 m/s which is about 2% of the speed of light. Still pretty fast eh
