is it a myth that religion cannot change its mind while science can?
40 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>9028660
Certainly religious institutions can and do change their minds, but usually only after external pressures are so overwhelming that it becomes a PR problem not to.
>>
>>9028683

but surely some still do change their minds on logic and evidence. or probably a mix of both this rationality and the pressure.

Would dried meat be more or less nutritious? And would it be less or more dangerous to health?
23 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
are we talking about beef or caribou?
>>
>>9028311
Any meat. My curiosity arose regarding carcinogens in meat. I was thinking of what would be the healthiest way to eat meat. Lean meat like deer would be interesting.
>>
>>9028307
In a more general sense, dried foods per cubic meter are more densely packed because they're dehydrated, which tends to have a shrinking effect, but I'm not sure about health benefits

ITT: we share our clichees of students of different subjects, BUT please only based on personal experience, n >> 1. Bonus points for stating your own field and country. I'll start.

Computer Science - badly bearded, won't let you finish talking because what they have to say is more imporant. Sad thing is, they often are right. This is more the "linux" type; the "theoretical cs" type acts exactly like Math (below). There also seems to be the Business-type, which always wears a light blue shirt, is very unlikeable and downright scary for me and the reason I already hate the working world while at university (I am personally very dionysian though).

Math - just quiet, nice people. Like cats. Maybe a little too introverted; I often seem to scare them away. Curious lack of interest for personal gains.

Physics - very arrogant ductus, talk to you like they ate wisdom for breakfast but are kind enough to sacrifice their valuable time explaining things to you mortal. Seem to be studying this out of an overattachment to the "smart kid in class" role in high school and it shows.
Also act like what they do is the only imporant thing, when in reality it obviously is artificial superintelligence. (Not to say that physics may not play a part in finding better computational substrates, but this can be said of every field)

Biology - nice, easy going nerds (in the positive sense) who just like their subject.

Engineering - Jocks (not in a negative way, they just like normie stuff and big hard cogwheels - and who does not?)

Electrical Engineering - hardly recognizable; seem to be just very normal, a little smarter than average people. Also many are from muslim countries.

Cognitive science - lesbians

This comes from a CS student, from Germany. Please don't be offended if I insulted the students of your field, I very likely did not mean you.

What I am interested in is psychologists, sociologists, philosphers, cognitive scientists and of course everything else.

Biochem, US, small uni

CS- not offered.

Math- very few of them but all were very smart, reserved, good people overall.

Physics- weirdos. I dont even mean in a mean way, just bad at socializing, bad at conversation, a couple of these kids were your definition of neckbeards obsessed with girls, thinking of themselves as "nice guys"

Biology- 90% of them are premed tryhards who only care about money, prestige, or making their parents happy. Most hate theory, hate learning, hate studying, and are shitty academics in general. Think they are better than everyone else

Engineering- Down to earth industry people. Also after money but not completely obsessed with it. Enjoy solving problems

EE- not offered

Cognitive science/kinesiology (sp?)- athletes who are really dumb and get boosted through classes even if they dont actually pass

Chemistry- Hardest major offered at my school, they are all extremely friendly and love talking chem, dont give a fuck about anyone else around them.

Philosophy- tryhard numales who liked to say they are in STEM

Is solar energy a meme?
39 posts and 8 images submitted.
>>
>>9026009
yes, but it is still a viable energy source. Like how pepe is a meme but he is still a frog anyway.
>>
>>9026009
it's alright to use by individual households
not nearly enough to power the world with current technology and resources
>>
Ok here's a little task to distinguish brainlets from brainmores

1) How is solar power measured and what is the average power density per square meter?

2) Is there a limit to solar energy conversion from current tech and how would you derive it?

3) How much energy does it take to warm 1 L of water from 300 K to 335 K?

If you can answer these 3 questions, you will know if it's a meme or not.

because someone like Jansci isn't born everyday

this is what Eugene Wigner had to say about Von Neumann

""I have known a great many intelligent people in my life. I knew Planck, von Laue and Heisenberg. Paul Dirac was my brother in law; Leo Szilard and Edward Teller have been among my closest friends; and Albert Einstein was a good friend, too. But none of them had a mind as quick and acute as Jansci [John] von Neumann. I have often remarked this in the presence of those men and no one ever disputed me.

... But Einstein's understanding was deeper even than von Neumann's. His mind was both more penetrating and more original than von Neumann's. And that is a very remarkable statement. Einstein took an extraordinary pleasure in invention. Two of his greatest inventions are the Special and General Theories of Relativity; and for all of Jansci's brilliance, he never produced anything as original."

Would it be possible to create a gray laser?

Gray is not a color in a spectrum, so I would say no. But if you create a faint white laser, it may look grayish on a black background.

What if the only truly objective truth in reality is that there exists no objective truth?

That the only thing everything has in common is that it's all different.

If this is true, it means the universe is both ∞ and finite.

It means that both religion and science are both objectively true and Inherently flawed.

Right?

It also means we exist in both a first, second, third, fourth and fifth dimension simultaneously.

Am I wrong???

OP here,

Einstein and Hawking never took an IQ test. How can they claim she is 'smarter' than them? I read an article that says "Einstein is thought to have an IQ of 160", how is this even news? This is trash.

Plus her score is out of a SD of 24 (iirc) not 15.

Let's face it, there's way too many people on this planet and they're draining our resources and destroying our habitats. It's also the biggest cause of extinction of many species.

How do we reduce Earth's human population to a more manageable size? How do we do it quickly?

Actually, Earth can sustain the humans, not the system... It only consumes and destroys

I agree man. As a white man, I think we need to urge other whites to stop having kids and shit so we can support our African brothers and other peoples of color. And if that don't work then shit, maybe us whites need to get smoked, you know what I'm saying?

I got out of it Yau and Hamilton feel like NYT treated Yau unfairly and Yau contributed to the program that led to Perelman's proof.

Perelman apparently felt like Yau was trying to steal his work. Any ideas, context behind this letter or the proper facts of this story?

There's a bit more to this story, basically Yau supported two guys who claimed they had proved the conjecture using perelman's ideas when in reality they were just filling in some of the gaps of the proof, this didn't sit well with perelman

Imagine we're gambling on a game of chance. You are the player and I am the casino. The rules are simple. During the first round I flip a fair coin, if it's heads, then you win and we move to the next round, if tails, you lose and you keep the pot, which is 1 dollar during the first round. The pot is 2$ during the second round and 4$ during the third round. Doubling every round. Basically you play until you get a tails, at which point you keep whatever the pot is at. Let's assume there is no limit.

My question is how much you people would be willing to pay as an entrance fee to play a round of this game? Personal question, don't google for an answer.

I just wanna see if how rational this board is.
25 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>9030248
I would pay 5 dollars just for the novelty. At 5 dollars, I'd need to win 3 flips to profit which is reasonable chances. I don't know what the expected value is without making a table but it's probably around 3 dollars.
>>
>>9030248
Isn't that the martingale "gambling method"?
>>
>>9030248
Zero. it's obviously a scam since the expected value is infinite. The game cannot be played as promised.

The EM Drive is basically dead, not even r/EmDrive believes in it anymore, all the latest threads there are calling Shawyer a fraud and Tajmar, White and Yang kooks. No new results for months, just a few failed experiments and endless hyped up clickbait about flying cars and Mars in 5 days. Boeing or Lockheed or whatever have also lost interest.

How did so many of the physics community fall for such obvious bullshit? It was obviously just some unknown experimental error seeing as the thrust is always vanishingly small and near on impossible to replicate.

Eagleworks needs to go, they enabled this bullshit like all the other pseudoscientific sci-fi crap like warp drive that they legitimize to the story-hungry media with the NASA logo. They have produced nothing of value ever.

Seriulsy. They reported a thrust, and then I never heard anything again. Wtf happened? Was it just to get people interested in NASA?
>>
>>9030194
Except they didn't, they reported a thrust that was "within our error bars but we think it's interesting" and popsci ran with that.
