Do accomplished academics share the same mindset as those of say US Navy Seals? It's the toughest training in the world, but it's not something even steroids would help you get through. Not too much is known about Seals as they try to maintain "Quiet Professionalism." Are there parallels with top academics or is it all just cheap recruiting propaganda?

The only thing that school has in common with the navy seals is memorization. That's it
>>
Pushing yourself physically is different from pushing yourself mentally. For example a kid with ADHD has little problem with physical activity but greater difficulty sitting down and studying for an hour.

The main difference is probably the amount of "decision making", if you have to run 10 miles you make a few decisions about your route, psych yourself up, then there are lots of small "decisions" henceforth as you decide where to step next and such, whereas someone engaged in an intellectual task will be constantly learning new things that are more difficult than map reading.

SEALs have to learn a lot more than map reading of course, however a great deal of their time is spent in physical training while a top tier university student will be studying and working on projects pretty much all the time.
>>
Not really, SEALS are all about teamwork and accomplished academics are all about fucking over everyone else to get ahead.

>Do accomplished academics share the same mindset as those of say US Navy Seals?

No, academics are required to think.
>>

>toughest training in the world
no it's not, navy seals are mediocre compared to most SF in the world
>>
>>9032454

don't be a dick, SEALs are considered among the best. Not THE best, but top 5, definitely

If you mean, a ridiculously over the top difficult academic program that tests your endurance then yes, such a program exists it's called the Cambridge Mathematical Tripos
>>
>Combat Veteran and Planetary Science Researcher

'Toughest Military Training' and having a picture of a BUD/S class on the beach is kind of telling of ignorance of the system.

'Toughest' in the military is really based in the eye of the beholder. As far as training goes? From my experience the old 'Jungle School' at Fort Sherman in Panama was as tough as it got in the military.

Before that? Probably the Recondo course instructed by MACVSOG in Command and Control North in Vietnam. The final evaluation of the course was a combat raid on the Ho Chi Minh trail.

Not to mention that the endorphin release from physical activity is much more intense compared to any intellectual joy one might derive from regular academic study.

It's not fair tbqh.

Steroids and other PEDs would absolutely help you get through SEAL training through it'd be pretty impossible to sneak them into the barracks and use them without somebody finding out and putting you in the stockade/dishonorable discharge.

The goal of said military training is mainly to break you so the military may reorganize your personality into a cold blooded killer that doesn't hesitate when given orders, so if you loaded up on EPO and had insane levels of Lance Armstrong endurance they would likely just keep working you until you finally dropped anyway.

>Pushing yourself physically is different from pushing yourself mentally
In what way? At a certain point during SF training, your body gives way, then it's all about playing mental games with yourself to not quit. Not to mention, SEALS are constantly trained to make split second decisions through various exercise, and literally have to submerge themselves in water for several minutes with no air tank. Half of the game is a mental challenge. Not exactly academic, but it's not all physical
>>
>>9032525
Steroids don't prevent you from feeling the effects of hours in near-hypothermic water temperatures. Even running just being told to run not knowing how far or any objective is all mental. In hell week (5 days) you run over 200 miles like this. Steroids also don't regulate feelings such as anger or resentment between instructors and teammates.
>>
>>9032853
But they help you get stronger and heal faster which would help minimize the effect of physical exhaustion on the other psychological effects.
>>
>>9032168
Pretty sure the SAS one is tougher. People die in it every few years.
>>
>>9033366
>died during a """training exercise"""
That's like the most common use of plausible deniability
>>
>>9032168
The seals have a bigger portrait that they see themselves through as they make decisions. At a university level a student's main goals are decided upon largely in part because of social standards.

Pushing past your physical limits over and over again makes you hardy yet quick, indifferent to pain and relentless in pursuit of tasks.

Also, they commit suicide more than the national USA average.
