Hey /sci/, /k/ here. why isn't petrol used instead of gunpowder?

The strength of a reaction using petrol would be limited by how much oxygen you could get to it. As gunpowder comes with an included oxidizer, it doesn't have this problem.

Ghosts were confirmed with quantum theory.

Ghosts are just spooky manifestations of the randomness of quantum particles.

Like, when you see a ghost move a chair, it is just that the quarks that made up the chair randomly decided to all spin to that direction at the same time, creating a net force that moved the chair to that direction.

'Ghost Busters' are actually Applied Particle Physicists who visit people's houses to calm down the quantum fields there and also study them so that maybe one day they can comprehend all the spookiness.

/sci/, what can you tell me about pyridoxine (vitamin b6)? Especially about seizures caused by overdosing on it, how are they like, how long after the take is cut the symptoms stop and do they leave other neurological problems?

I was once tested too high on B6. No symptoms experienced at all. You will probably need to get downright insane doses like triple of what is considered normal amounts of B6 to attain seizures.

In Lambda calculus, how can I make a lambda expression input the abstraction (the definition) of another Lambda expression?

Like, if I have a lambda expression which multiplies x by 3, I want to input "the expression of multiplying x by 3".

>>

I don't understand what you're asking. Can you explain in more detail?

Reading through these lecture notes might help as well.
http://arxiv.org/abs/0804.3434
>>
>>7790221
I want to input a lambda expression as a lambda expression, and not as what it outputs.

An equivalent with traditional mathematical functions would be this:
Inputting a function as it's defined using set theory, instead of just inputting its output.
For example, the function f simply inputs the result of g here: f(g(x)). What is desired is to input the definition of the function - its domain, range, and all the tuple mappings between the two.
>>
>>7790245
First of all, in set theory, functions are actually just sets of ordered pairs.

For instance you may have a function
[math]f=\{(1,a),(2,b),(3,c)\}[/math]
Then saying [math]f(1)[/math] actually means you're evaluating [math]f[/math] "at" [math]1[/math]. In other words, [math]f(1)[/math] is not a function, it's just an element of the co-domain. I.e.
[math]f(1)=a[/math]

So writing something like [math]f(g(x))[/math] is just f evaluated at "g evaluated at x". If you do this element wise then you can produce a new function that is the composition of the other two but formally this is subtly different from evaluating one function on the output of another one.

All that said, if I understand you correctly (I'm honestly not sure I do because I find your explanation kind of strange to be honest) what you want is to write something like

(\g \x. f (g x)) G
where G represents the lambda expression for the function you want to evaluate x on before feeding it into f.

Hey /sci/,
does anyone here have medical knowledge and can tell me, if it is possible, to keep one eye closed for the rest of their lives? Besides amblyopia, the eye is completely healthy. Would the eyesight be affected it would stay close for a year and then reopened again?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>7790133

If you're embarrassed about having a lazy eye, just get the surgery to straighten it. It's a really simple procedure.

As to your question, the eye would be fine if you didn't use it for years, in fact it might even be better off without all that wear and tear.
>>
>>7790133

It probably wouldn't be an issue. If you were to do something like this as an infant it could result in an underdeveloped primary visual cortex but if you're older than that you shouldn't have any permanent deficits.
>>
>>7790133
Yes it would cause problems.

Your brain would learn to do everything with one eye only and when you open your eye up again after the year it would have to re-learn a lot of things again.

Try it and document your findings for science m8.

I'm not entirely sure if this is the right board to ask, but here's my quick question.

Our universe, is right now sitting at the end of the 'bell' edge on.
The current state of cosmologay is a little tragic with memers like Tyson and Cox, so that anyone studying it is referred to as a 'bell-end' in an affectionate manner.

Does Name/Brand/Prestige = Higher Starting pay + Higher opportunity? Or is this just a meme? If it depends on courses, what course does it matter in?

A prestigious program means

-Good networking opportunities
-Big companies directly recruit from that school
-Good opportunities to learn cutting edge stuff
-Good equipment / labs / etc.

You can turn all of that into higher pay and better opportunities, if you're not a moron, but it's up to you to do the work.

Also note that I do not say "good classes". In a research-focused university, which is what the prestigious ones are, quality of undergraduate education is sometimes a secondary priority.

HELLO.

I HAVE TWO QUESTIONS:

1. WHAT THE "FUCK" IS THE RELATIVE ORIENTATION OF THE ORION NEBULA ("M42")? I HAVE FUTILELY SEARCHED ONLINE FOR ANY RELEVANT INFORMATION; IT SHOULD NOT BE THIS DIFFICULT TO FIND OUT.

I WANT TO KNOW WHERE DOES THE "OPENING" OR "MOUTH" OF THE NEBULA POINT, RELATIVE TO AN OBSERVER ON EARTH; "UPWARD", TOWARD ORION'S HEAD, OR "DOWNWARD"?

2. THERE ARE FOUR PRIME "STARS" THAT COMPOSE "ORION'S SWORD"; THEIR NAMES ARE "HATSYA", "M42", "M43" —WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE FOURTH ONE? I HAVE ALSO FUTILELY SEARCHED ONLINE FOR ANY RELEVANT INFORMATION REGARDING THIS; IT IS ODDLY AND FRUSTRATINGLY, DIFFICULT TO FIND OUT THIS SIMPLE INFORMATION THAT SHOULD BE, BY NOW, "COMMON PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE" IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE.

THAT TELLS ME VIRTUALLY NOTHING, BESIDE, THE INFORMATION IS SELFCONTRADICTORY; IT TELLS THAT "ORION'S SWORD" COMPRISES THREE STARS, THEN YOU PROCEED TO NAME FIVE OBJECTS.

ALSO, ODD THAT THERE ARE NO DEPICTIONS, OR PHOTOGRAPHS OF "c", AND "THETA ORIONIS".

1. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT ARE THE NAMES OF THE OBJECTS IMMEDIATELY IDENTIFIABLE FROM EARTH'S SURFACE WITHOUT IMPLEMENTS.

I AM NOT INTERESTED IN SCHOLASTIC CONSTRUCTS/FABRICATIONS, OR IN ALLEGED OBJECTS.

2. WOULD YOU IDENTIFY BY NAME THE OBJECTS COMPRISING "ORION'S SWORD" AS SHOWN IN THE IMAGE ATTACHED TO THIS POST?

Lets carry out an experiment.

What would happen if I hold two magnets together in the pictured configurations and run an electrical current through said magnets?

Magnets would be mounted on a non metallic structure.

All variations of electrical charge, amperage, voltage and magnet being electrified will be tested.

Any suggestions?

They would lose their conductivity and in turn magnetism since heat increases resistance
>>
>>7789874
My research is actually on ferromagnetic and superconducting interfaces, particularly F/F/S, so what you're describing sounds familiar as a classical spin valve.

See each magnet has a preferred spin orientation, giving them their magnetic field. Thus when a current is ran through a magnet, not only is charge being transferred but the spin is as well. When current runs from a normal metal into a magnet, spins matching that of the ferromagnet will pass through with ease but the opposing spin will either reflect backward (losing net current) or will flip spins. This means that current with the same spin as the magnet will have less resistance than for the opposing spin.

This comes into play in designing a spin valve. Here, you use two ferromagnets, the first being "hard" so that you can fix which spin is preferred, the second being "soft" so that you can control the resistance. By changing the soft's magnetization from the same direction to the opposite direction of the hard magnet, you can GREATLY increase the circuit's resistance. This is very useful for things like memory where you want a definite on/off state.

Of course if you run it too high or too hot, the above mentioned demagnetization will occur.

Thanks for your answer.
Now if you'll excuse my ineptitude in the subject.
Would you care to explain what you wrote in a way easier to understand for someone not versed in the subject?

Also, lets take this variation of the setup.

Magnets set with poles that repel, facing each other.
Low voltage, high amperage positive current run through both magnets.
What would happen?
