Why do you chose science or math, guys?
I have just met a person who is leagues above me. I have seen people with a quick problem solving skill or something similar before, but they have their flaws.
But this guy, he seems like another John Von Newmann. He's basically inhuman in term of intelligent.
It makes me feel like I'm worthless and I will never contribute as much as him.
It makes me question myself why did I choose this in the first place. I thought I was going to do something I love and contribute something. But in the end, everything shattered.

While he may potentially be a wizard, it's also very likely that he sincerely enjoys his subject to the point where he studies and practices for leisure.
What did he do, if I may ask, that has made you feel so insignificant? John von Neumann's particular ability was his ability to quickly perform brute-force mental calculations and considerations. This would have given him a huge advantage since it would allow him to essentially increase the rate at which he can consider, accept, or reject ideas.

I'm 18 and I'm in senior level uni classes for mathematics (category theory and algebra. I've taken complex and real analysis, group theory, ordinary and partial Diffy Q's already.) Tbh I don't give a damn when someone isn't as proficient as me, so unless people are absolute dicks, I wouldn't worry about being looked down on or anything.
Also, for me, I just really like the subject so I'm highly motivated to learn more. I basically have no friends but just sit around and read math papers and textbooks in my spare time, or I program.

There's always someone better. That's life. Stop whining and grow up, you fucking man child. Think of it as a lesson in humility.
Are there LED street lights in your city?
Our city had planned on installing these to replace the old yellow sodium lamps. They never did in the end, but I wish they did.
It be nice to drive at night and not have everything be colored piss yellow and washed out.
They save a lot of electricity, and I heard that they could help to reduce crime.
>>7974994
> I heard that they could help to reduce crime. [citation needed]
I see LED lights all the time, no idea if they are better or not visually
>>7974994
sodium bulbs are cozy tho
ok you faggots
what the fuck is zero
and
what the fuck is infinity
i want a straight answer from you fags
Numbers are a social construct
infinity is a number and zero is how many times you've had sex

zero is half an infinity
infinity is two zeroes
can all of mathematics be derived from 1+1=2?
>>7983421
Using only that 1+1=2, what's 3+4?
>>7983421
In the everyday sense of "1+1=2," no, it cannot. For example, you cannot say that there exists an empty set from the above statement.
If you want to consider "1+1=2" in a more rigorous sense, then learn how to bait better and actually try to define it.
>>7983428
1+1=2
2+1=3
3+1=4
1+1+1+1+1+1=7
>Deepmind gameplaying AI can navigate 3D environments
>If put on a robot platform it would try to play a game in reality.
>If they teach it to do quests according to written or verbal instructions it will try its best to be a slave to get highscores.
It's over, we're all going to be obsolete by 2022
Define a "robot platform"
>>7980509
he means if they installed it on an elevator it would try and play pong with the skyscraper next to it
>>7980501
AlphaGo and its other cousins from the DeepMind team rely on being able to rerun the exact same scenario literally millions of times. If you try to do this IRL, it would take too long and also fail because past tries would influence the environment of future tries, leading to nonstationary data.
Why the fuck do people still use this shitty language?
Why hasn't python been adopted?
Why is this a major part of every engineering curriculum instead of a simple language like python that actually makes sense and is more flexible?
Is Mathworks paying people to stay alive?
>num2mat
People are actually coding full projects in this bullshit. Can you really even call being proficient at MATLAB a skill?

>python
Fuck no. White space sensitivity is autistic cancer
>>7978437
Use semicolons and Whython?
Shit, I'd take Rust over MATLAB.

How does it feel knowing all engineers are literally low IQ morons who can't force a square block through a cylindrical hole
If you can't see that these are works of modern art, you need to kill yourself.
>want to be an engineer to make money but don't want to be a brainlet that does shit like this
fuck what do i do? where's the middle ground?

Doing enough problems and getting some proper time invested will make you like the subject.
How come there are tons of mathematical constants that are real but no constants that are complex numbers?
pic unrelated
>no constants that are complex numbers
That's a strong statement, you have a way to prove that?

i is as famous as pi or e, nigga.

2*pi*i comes up a lot
So, I had a go at uni last year and completely sucked (Computer Engineering), I did fine in Programming 101, but Math related I completely failed Calc1, save the Calc1 its easy meme, obviously I'm not leveled so for me it isn't.
So I kinda got discouraged and didn't do much, but I was thinking about giving it another go next semester.
Well the question is this: I have the chance to do Discrete Mathematics before Calc1 (its not standard, but I'm allowed), do you think it would be better to do that course first and that may help me do Calc better later? Or should I stick with Calc and study more?
Give me your thoughts anons.
>>7983017
any math will help you do other math easier
that said, calculus is elementary. you only need to follow instructions. you might need to work harder and start trying to learn instead of memorizing
>>7983017
How the fuck did you fail Calc 1?
Discrete Math is completely unrelated to Calc 1. Taking it b4 Calc 1 won't help.
Discrete math is indeed easier, but if you're failing Calculus I, you need to try harder.
You're a computer engineering major. You'll need to learn it. It's not a fun class, and I only got a B in all three of them, but it's necessary.
I will say that after taking all three of them, the discrete math course at my school is a complete cakewalk. I've scored perfectly on almost every exam and quiz so far.
Been struggling with Calculus I at school, the lectures don't seem to be cutting it up for me. I need more explanation to understand things.
What worked out for you anons, any books/tutorials that really helped you out?
Need of your dire help anons, just need some guidance..
Search for "CalculusExpert" on YouTube, she explains it really well and makes it look as easy as it is.

Is it a bad thing to start liking CS so much that you switched from Mechanical Engineering to studying it?
Why all the hate for the Computer Science field? I'm at Georgia Tech and we have a pretty decent CS program (I think), pretty sure the consensus is they have some sort of higher 'prestige'. Is there higher mobility in engineering if you are proficient at it?
Why is it assumed that it is any less rigorous even though, sans Nuclear engineering - the physics and maths requirements are the same?
Why do Computer Science majors get paid more after graduation?
Is there some sort of bubble?
>>7978398
Because you barely learn anything.
>>7978398
It depends, if you enter academia you'll quickly find your undergrad is pretty irrelevant, most people learn outside their field and end up doing something completely different.
Entering industry there are good and bad people in all fields who are paid well and shit respectively. The main reason to do enigneering is if you want to work in a specific industry requiring licensure; ie if you want to design and sign off on nuclear reactors you need a Nuclear engineering degree.
What's nice about engineering in general is that you can get a PE from it, a PE gives you a lot of leverage in wage negotions, especially in academia and research where people get fucked.
In general an engineering degree is more valuable for you unless you are absolutely sure about what you want to do, it gives you more freedom in general.
>>7978400
This is something that could be said about undergrad in general.
>ME track
>learn how to make PDEs in joke programming language
>draft in CAD software
>memorize sets of kinematic/thermal equations in different formulations
>CS track
>learn how to make PDEs in actual programming language and model equations - in a style closer to reality wherein you are allowed to use computers to solve PDEs
>learn AI algorithms
>learn how to interface with devices
>etc etc hence capitalistic demand
Yeah, still not seeing why they get shit on
Is it possible to do math without Numbers?
What would such an alien math look like?
>>7973967
Vectors aren't numbers, they are just represented by numbers.
Look at geometry, there are no numbers there, just we represent properties of shapes with numbers.
Knot theory also uses no numbers.
In answer to your question, it really depends on your definition of mathematics. Is geometry mathematics? Or is what we use to describe geometry mathematics?
If the answer is the latter, then maths must use numbers, if it's the former then certain branches of mathematics do not necessarily need numbers.
>>7973967
Yes. Just like ZFC but without the infinity axiom.
>>7973986
>knot theory
stop trying to promote your useless field, you fucking loser
>Vectors aren't numbers, they are just represented by numbers.
