Not sure, but most mental illnesses are genetic.
>>
>>8065618
Definitely untrue. Why does spontaneous remission happen if its genetic? As many as 50% of depressed people recover without treatment within 12 months.

I graduate tomorrow with a phd in mechanical engineering and a masters in physics. woooohoo

What would it take to make a windmill for solar winds viable? I don't mean to get energy from the light, but moreso energy from the constant bombardment of tiny high speed particles.

Solar sail tests so far have shown that using the pressure from light can be used to affect flight paths of tiny satellites they are attached too.

But on planets with little to no atmosphere, where solar panel efficiency might be too low, or unreliable, could a solar windmill provide a constant source of energy, for a habitat or underground facility?

What kinds of numbers should I look for to get a better understanding of why this won't work, and if tasked with making something like this work, what materials science breakthrough would we need to accomplish this?

If solar panel efficiency might be too low/unreliable then the force generated by light will be just as (proportionally) bad.

The source is fundamentally the same (the sun) and so any light generated will be subjected to the inverse square law, be it used in solar power cells or solar "wind"
>>
>>8065266
The solar wind is a stream of energized, charged particles, primarily electrons and protons, flowing outward from the Sun, through the solar system at speeds as high as 900 km/s and at a temperature of 1 million degrees (Celsius). It is made of plasma.

Hello /sci/,
I'm trying to estimate the probability of two statistically independent events. I know that in conditional probability
P(A|B) = P(A&B)/P(B)
but for statistically independent events:
P(A&B) = P(A)*P(B)
which means that
P(A|B) = P(A)

This results in charts like this one, where each of my categories ends up with the same probability for each other category. The lines only vary according to the real value of the number of members of that category.

Is there a better transformation I can do on my data, such that each of these lines is different, and so that each category produces a different probability?

I can try and explain myself more clearly if that doesn't make sense.

Thanks for your help.

It occurs to me that these events actually aren't independent. If someone is employed in Agriculture, for instance, there is some chance that they earn band 2 per week, some chance they earn band 3 per week, etc. And this is dependent upon the industry of employment. I just don't know what this probability is, and that's what I want to determine. How do I work this out from what I have?
Pic is the earnings bands the numbers represent.

Hey, /sci/.

I have a weird and open-ended question, so please let me know if this type of thread doesn't belong here.

In the past, I didn't really care about my math classes, and I wasn't interested in math. I did the minimum amount of work needed to get an A, and just memorized enough concepts to do well on tests.

Somehow, I got more interested in math recently and started reading more about mathematics on my own, and I want to learn more about math topics.

However, I barely remember ANYTHING from when I was taking math courses in school, and I have a REALLY hard time reading about any math at all, because all the jargon and symbols are gibberish to me. I feel that I cheated myself out of understanding the fundamentals well, because I slogged through all my math classes before without paying the slightest bit of attention.

So, my question is this:
If I want to learn everything over again, back from basic calculus, linear algebra, discrete math, and onwards, where should I begin? How should I go about learning basic proof methods and other stuff?

I can't afford to go back to college and learn from a good professor, but I feel like I learn best when I have someone to ask questions and get clarifications from.

What should I do, /sci/?

Please ignore the frog, I had no other images

Math grad student from standford here.

I was in the same boat when I was younger.

I dont think you messed up. I think its just a common pathway that many people follow. Going from mindless plug-and-chug A+ to realizing the power behind it and developing a genuine interest for deeper understanding

You are in a spaceship that has separate rockets pointed to fire vertically, and horizontally.

Suppose you fire your horizontal rocket using 1 unit of fuel, making your horizontal velocity equal to 1. After two seconds, you ship's position is (2, 0), and you have traveled a distance of 2.

Suppose you fire both your horizontal and vertical rockets, using .5 units of fuel for each, and thus 1 unit of fuel total, making your horizontal velocity equal to .5, and your vertical velocity equal to .5. After two seconds then, you ship's position is (1, 1), and you have traveled a distance of 1.414.

Why did you travel less distance even though you used the same amount of fuel?
14 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Because the two rockets are orthogonal.

There will be a component of force, for each rocket, in the direction you are traveling.

There will be a component of force parallel to this direction, and for each rocket these are equal and opposite.
