Prove convincingly to me that the real numbers exist.

Come on, /sci/, you should be able to do this.

>>
look at your hand, it has 5 fingers, so 5 exists. there's then no reason for all the other numbers to not exist
>>
Let 1 be a real number. If we let x = 1 and x is in Z, then QED

Assume that only a single number exists, say 1.
We know that 1 = 1
Assuming that 1 exists add 1.
1 + 1 = 2, a newly defined number
We proved that any x + 1 = a new number
this holds for all cases
QED

http://www.sciencealert.com/researchers-just-found-a-second-dyson-sphere-star

>Named EPIC 204278916, the star is estimated to be about the size of our Sun in diameter, but has only half its mass.

>The researchers report that over 78.8 days of observations, EPIC 204278916 displayed irregular dimming of up to 65 percent for around 25 consecutive days.

Maybe we aren't alone as we thought?

Okay.

This will effect me in 40-50 years from now how?
>>
Since it's the second one they've found this year I'm going to assume these aren't dyson sphere's, but something else probably.

Just a coincidence imo
>>
Actually that article seems to be saying they've got a reasonable solution to why it's dimming and that the same solution could be applied to the other one.

The solution ain't aliens btw.

If you nerds are so smart, why don't you play poker?

>In college, she was on the Dean's list.[12] After studying some game theory, she became proficient with the Rubik's Cube and then chess. However, because she considers both to be fairly objective static games, she began to prefer poker, which incorporated human psychology that allows for inferior hands to win.[13] She graduated early from Duke University after two and a half years with a major in economics and a minor in political science in December 2003.[14][18] Her collegiate duration of two and a half years was the shortest time to graduate in the history of Duke.[14]

>A poker player since the age of five, Rousso began serious poker tournament play during her summer break from law school.[2] Rousso was in the top 5% of her law school class,[22] but she did not finish law school.[17] Now, excluding online winnings, she ranks among the top five women in poker history in terms of all-time money winnings.[9]

>In 2007, she earned $700,782.50, her largest career payday at that time, during the World Championship of Online Poker NL Hold'em Main Event with a second-place finish in the 2998-entrant field.[42]

>As of July 2011, her tournament winnings exceed $3,100,000.[50] In May 2009, Rousso won the 79-entrant €25,000 EPT High Roller Championship, which had a first prize of 720,000 Euros.[51] However, at the final table, the three final contestants elected to chop chips at €420,000 and leave €150,000 for the winner.[52] The €570,000 win, which converts to $749,467,

>As of 2015, Rousso has finished in the money in numerous live poker events and accumulated over $3,500,000 in career earnings.[7]

Started practicing it seriously during my masters. After a while I realized I just didn't like it this much, and it's very, very serious time investment. I'm talking "taking a second job" time investment here, not just "weekend hobby".

>but the money
yeah you can make some good money, but given the time investment you could make that much money in other ways. And I'd rather make it doing something I like.
>>
Because it's a hard way to make an easy living.

It's way less glamorous than you think it is. The smartest nerds are actually the ones making poker bots.

Junk foods have high concentrations of certain amino acids which can be converted in the body to neurotransmitters. These are chemicals which pass messages between nerves. If an excess of these chemical messengers should accumulate, then too many messages are being transmitted in the brain, leading to the disruptive behavior observed in susceptible individuals. (ex: american children, americans, etc)

Prove me wrong.

Why the fuck does water evaporate
17 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
cmon somebodys gotta know
>>
Molecules vibrate more the hotter they get, so when liquid water is heated to a certain point, the molecules vibrate so strongly that they break the bonds that hold each other together. Without these bonds, the molecules float freely into the air as vapor.
>>
Because that's the entropically favorable thing to do.

I get Einstein but why neumann? He's a below average mathematician who has zero contributions to anything.

We should get the relativity team together and respawn Borh and Lorentz along with Einstein.

What's the highest concentration of neanderthal DNA ever found in a modern day human? I know that in all of samples so far in some of these studies we've found up to 20% of the neanderthal genome but individuals rarely exceed, if ever, 5%. Am I just ignorant and don't know about a few extraordinary cases? Do you guys think as more and more studies are conducted and the sample size grows that we'll find individuals with higher concentrations of neanderthal DNA? Please discuss.

Go all in on algebraic structures and combinatorics t.b.h.

And it sure will teach them more about thinking than solving fucking triple integrals would.

Just looked up the Vitali set, and the quotient group R/Q is really confounding me. On the one hand it must exist since the cardinality of R is greater than of Q, but on the other you can't construct a single element in R/Q!

Please help me reconcile this.

Bump. First thread on /sci/ with potential since the Egyptian math guy.
>>
>>8322789
There's nothing to discuss, I just find it silly to have a non-measurable set where you couldn't possibly construct a single element (because Q is dense in R).
