>Scipione del Ferro (6 February 1465 – 5 November 1526) was an Italian mathematician who first discovered a method to solve the depressed cubic equation.

>There are no surviving scripts from del Ferro. This is in large part due to his resistance to communicating his works. Instead of publishing his ideas, he would only show them to a small, select group of friends and students.

>It is suspected that this is due to the practice of mathematicians at the time of publicly challenging one another. When a mathematician accepted another's challenge, each mathematician needed to solve the other's problems. The loser in a challenge often lost funding or his university position. Del Ferro was fearful of being challenged and likely kept his greatest work secret so that he could use it to defend himself in the event of a challenge.

can we revive this?

You laugh, though the exact reason for your laughter is not perfectly clear. And yet there are certain very good, perfectly legitimate reasons for del Ferro's secrecy which were not only explained in the blurb, /but which remain true and relevant today/. Specifically, the fear of getting scooped. Cardano scooped Tartaglia, who was similarly reticient. This is one of the great all-time scoops in the history of science.

Of course, the best way to avoid getting scooped is to publish first. But even this can prove difficult, since the history of mathematics also shows us, most prominently with Newton and Leibniz (and even in the case of del Ferro and those a generation younger than him) that mathematicians of the same generation find themselves working on the same problems.

Third, mathematicians have never ceased to be autistic dickwavers over who proved what first. Read Hardy's /Mathematician's Apology/ for a typically nerdy/autistic account of the glory that comes with being credited as the person to have proven something first, to actually be on the vanguard of whatever is hot this generation. History and teaching aren't good enough; if you're not on the bleeding edge, then for Hardy, you're not a real mathematician.

All this is infinitely depressing, especially if you're someone genuinely brilliant like a Grothendieck or a Perelman, that the brainlet-dickwaving over things (you yourself) could prove within a week, seems pointless to you. If you're a Grothendieck or a Perelman, all that you really want to do is to discuss the nice schemes or ricci flow or whatever it is, with whoever is willing to listen and be taught. But no, the dickwaving and backstabbing continue. Once you understand this dark side of "the mathematical community", it becomes easy to appreciate why the above types would eventually leave in disgust and protest.

Not to mention that if you are an actual mathematician, you are forever receiving unwanted communications from cranks.

Is the direct relation between a society's technological advancement and social anxiety in that society's children the biggest detriment towards humanity advancing as a whole?

I think technology works as a catalyst for social people, meaning that those who are naturally social are even more so, widening the rift between the social and anti-social.

I don't think this is necessarily a detriment towards human advancement. In fact, many of the "smartest" people throughout history have tended to be anti-social or marginalized from society, or at least capable of deep anti-social activity. I think this video touches on that a little bit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ym6whrAw8wU

If "genius" is truly innately inclined to anti-socialness, the widening of the rift would possibly even spur more of this "genius" effect in those who are anti-social.

Should I? I want to do it, but not to make myself feel good or superior or anything, I just want to learn more related material for when I go to grad school.

My main major is physics, but I also have a chem BA (because I used to be a chem major and switched when I was most of the way though (still gotta finish last two classes tho)). From what I've heard from you faggots, a math degree is essential to go on for a physics MS or PhD so now I feel like I have to stay on for another year to prepare my jewish asshole from graduate professor's throbbing nigger cocks trying to get in. Or yeah know what I mean. Bad or good idea?

Sorry, talking about triple majoring and adding on a math degree in my fifth year of undergrad, forgot to include the expo
>>
Currently physics MS, you don't need to be a math major. Can you do calculus? If so good, that's a large chunk of the bitch work. Take a math physics course, work hard and put some effort into knowing basic linear algebra, differential equations, you'll be fine. Yeah, the further you go into theoretical, the higher the math you'll need, but you don't need to do a degree just for that. Wanna know what my undergrad degree was? Fucking psychology, if I can do it, so can you.

>From what I've heard from you faggots, a math degree is essential to go on for a physics MS or PhD

Holy shit you've heard so wrong.

You know why physics requires you to do some math classes? Because those are the math classes you need to do physics. Everything else goes way beyond.

You are going to sign up for math and be fucking constructing the reals in set theory and you are going to ask your professor "How do I apply set theory in physics" and he will spit in your face.

Stop getting baited. Get a second opinion from someone in real life man. /sci/ is a troll house meant to make everyone insecure about their major choice.

I know this is probably a common thread, but I'm wondering what is a good book for Calculus?

I've just finished up Calc 2, but I want to re solidify my foundation. I have calc 3 next semester, and so I'd like to study up during winter break.

I didn't save any notes or material from my calc 1 class (I took it over a year ago).

any suggestions, thanks in advance.

The most common names I see here are Spivak and Stewart.

Went through calc 1 and 2 with Stewart myself. Not great for first learning, but probably all right for review. Problem sets are good and challenging.

I have a Chem final on Friday and a Bio one the next day.

Whats the most efficient way for me to study? Study for both a bit each day, or study for one the first half of the week and then the other the second half of the week?

I'm sure there must be some physics college students aroung here.
Pic related is what I'm doing. I have to do experiments and then put them on paper. What is this called in English? Laboratory tests? Laboratory works? I just need to find more information on those and how I should work with the data I obtain.
If you know, I would appreciate any site that could help me improving these papers.

I'm trying to do a thing with matlab but can't find anything detailing how to do it.

I have ode113 integrating a function for a certain amount of time, and after it's done, I want to ask the user for some kind of input, add that to the output conditions, put this addition back into the initial conditions, and run it again

I'm fine with getting that to work, but my problem is that I want to "keep going from where I left off" aka. right now it would just overwrite my previous output vector and I want it to append the new data to the end of it

any help is appreciated

>>
I'm not sure if I understand your problem, but maybe you can use save() to save the variable into a file? And then get it back with load()

Check the docs if you haven't used those functions.
>>
Dont think that function can do that. Easier thing to do is save the old output in another variable and manually stitch them together yourself. You could write a wrapper for the solver that does it and just call the wrapper.
>>
>>8531929
not quite the problem, it'll make more sense if I explain to you specifically. Basically you have a spacecraft moving with some initial conditions under the influence of gravity, then after a certain amount of time waiting, the user can give it a new velocity (presumably a rocket engine firing), and a certain amount of time to wait and it'll move as it's supposed to (again only under the influence of gravity) until the user is queried again
>>8532008
ah well, I guess I might just have to do it manually, kinda a pain in the ass though

What's the better indicator of a girl's physical readiness to have sex: the presence of boobs and pubes, or menarche?

Many primitive foraging societies have some kind of rule or ideal that a girl shouldn't have sex until her first period, though these rules are probably no more "natural" than the age of consent in modern societies (which are often broken and I imagine the same happens in primitive societies). If menarche was the natural age of consent then surely we'd expect girls to have evolved to physically advertise that they've started menstruating. Instead we see no such thing. One month before, one month after her first period a girl looks and behaves just the same. You can't tell just by looking if a girl has started menstruating. And menarche doesn't really mark the beginning of fertility, anyway.

So isn't it more likely that the dramatic appearance of breasts and pubic hair is actually the signal of readiness to have sex, regardless of the age of menarche or onset of fertility?

lol this question

Say youre driving down the highway at 65mph with your windows down, when all of the sudden you drive through a swarm of migrating bees And a bee flys through the window into your car

Does the bee stay stationary in your car and move along with you inside, or does it splat against the inside of the back window?
13 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
There's no such thing as bees.

Next question.
>>
As you're traveling at 65mph the wind in your car is gusting at 65mph. This will create an angry swarm of bees that can fly at over 65mph trapped in the same car that you happen to have tied/bucked yourself to. At this point the only thing to do is unbuckle yourself and jump out.
