so /sci/

Is there some proof out there stating that a general zero-finding formula using only trig and logs cannot exist? As in, can one find the zeroes of polynomials using only trig and logs, maybe even nested logs and trig?

i've read that abels theorem says no general formula using addition, multiplication, division, subtraction, exponent, or radical. exists for polynomials above the degree 5, but trig isnt addition, multiplication, division, subtraction, exponent, or radical.

i've been told to look into fourier series but i jsut dont know where to start.
i want an exact formula, not estimations. ( though, of course estimations may have to be used when implementing the formula)

I know your pain, but you do have to realize that some times the answer will never be as pretty as you hoped.

Here's what you were looking for:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bring_radical

And all general x^5 + ax^4 +bx^3...=0 equations can be resolved to x^5-x+p=0 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bring_radical#Bring.E2.80.93Jerrard_normal_form ), by using https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tschirnhaus_transformation

me too thanks

I just finished watching Category Theory for Programmers on youtube. Maybe now I'll understand 20% of what Kmett is doing with his life.
>>
I like constructive mathematics and type theory
>>
I'm really into logic and took a class relating it to isomorphism algorithms for graphs this past semester. I don't know how category theory ties into any of this but the faculty at my university seem unusually interested in it so that's cool and I may get to learn more eventually.

If you rotate the universe so some spatial axis be on the time axis, and that time axis now where that spatial axis was, what would the universe look like?
9 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>8532986
Time and space are inseparable, not interchangeable.
>>
>>8532986
Don't you mean, WHEN would the universe look like?
>>
>>8532986
Axes are arbitrary distinctions we've made to understand relationships between various points. This is like asking what would happen if you place the "z" axis where the "x" axis was and the "x" where the "z" was. Absolutely nothing. Nothing has changed about the function because you've changed the coordinate system you're using to understand that function visually. Given, a time dimension, at least in Minkowksi Spacetime, is not treated in the same manner that a spatial dimension on a Cartesian coordinate system would be,but it's regardless.

What are you guys up to?

Exams are soon, so I am just studying away and (trying to) finish up some assignments early so I can do some extra exercises. In particular, Lie algebras. Looking forward to the break when I can do a bit more on what I want to learn.

What are Morse functions again? I remember hearing about them years ago in a lecture on the proof of the Gauss-Bonnet theorem.

>>

Morse functions are functions which have only non-degenerate critical points. We use them to study the topology of smooth manifolds using Morse theory.

>>
>>8535781
Exactly.

OP, your question is simply too complicated. Proving logic theorems is not easy, nor are they easy to explain.
If you want to know the answer, you need to look at the actual proof. However, it won't be easy. Mathematics cannot be reduced to a pop version.

I have an option to take a module in game theory next year; is it worth taking or is it just a load of hand-wavey nonsense for brainlets?

So far I've much preferred all of the more rigorous mathematical courses I've taken, so is this something I want to avoid?

Let's assume for a second a crackpot in some random basement invented a machine that produced more energy that it consumes?

Let's assume it was real, what would happen then to science, physics and the economy?

will the jews kill that guy?
11 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>8535483
But what you don't realize is that the jews already have killed that guy, long before he was ever born. They have the power to go back into the past, and you would never know as the timeline would change and you would only see the new one.

>Let's assume...

>>
>>8535483
Depends on the machine's power. If the machine can produce energy from nothing, but only enough to power a tiny lightbulb, then I don't think the jews will care much.

>>
>>8535417
...why do you think milk is solid at room temperature?
>>
>>8535444
Because OP is an idiot and doesn't understand that there's a chemical/biological process going on. Milk isn't a compound, it's a mixture. Mixtures cannot be classified as solid or liquid or gas, only composed of solids, liquids, or gases.

>Pavlov's plants? Research suggests animal learning in veggies

I long suspected all living things have a very basic form of awareness, so it was kind of mind-blowing to see this confirmed experimentally.

Most lifeforms, it seems, must kill in order to live themselves. (Except of course those lifeforms which use photosynthesis.) Take that, vegans.

I'd like to see this experiment repeated and adapted for slime molds.
>>
This says nothing about "awareness" at all, and if it does, than you've got yourself a very weak form of awareness that really needed no experimental confirmation.
Yes, all organisms respond to stimulus. There's some middle-school level biology class info for you.

school needs to be like 3 hours a day and cover math and reading/writing.

with those two tools, kids can figure everything else out on their own via the internet. think about what you actually needed to know in order to successfully get through your first year of college. its not much. if thats where we are trying to get kids to, then there is no fucking reason for kids to be in a classroom fro 8 hours a day, 9 months out of the year for 12 years.
