I found one of these in a local 2nd hand store, they didn't want much for it, Would it be possible to diagnose a car ignition system with something like this? It seems to have a 8hz - 10 mhz range and comes with one probe of some sort.
Needless to say I'm pretty clueless about these things but have a car with notoriously problematic ignition so it could be handy to learn how to use something like this.
Any of you own something like this? How do you use it and can you check more stuff than just ignition?
That oscilloscope is pretty old so it's gonna be hard for you to get an accurate reading of phase depending on how close to perfect it has to be. Other than that it should be fine.

>reading of phase
Thx for the reply, senpai. What does this mean? I take it you're not referring to the same sort of phase found in larger AC currents?
Diagnose what? An oscilloscope shows voltage v time, nothing more. Its not some magical machien
Is anyone in here actually seriously interested in cars or do you just like to verbally shit on the other one's car?
Yes.

I'm here for both tbqh
I'm really only interested in one car.
How did you learn wrenching? When did it all start for you.
l'm curious to hear what kind of stories people have. At the age of 25 l've done nothing but changed an oil filter but want to get into wrenching. l've been reading a lot of general engineering things related to cars but haven't yet started doing anything.
>depressed as shit, almost considered suicide
>friend invites me to autox
>get really into cars aND hang out with him
>invites me to wrench on his car and get it ready to race in a national
>have tons of fun
>life is complete 180
>new confidence and not so beta
>get my first gf, first kiss, and still with her
If you read this, you know who you are.
I'm entering my first autocross this week. Excited af
I never did anything automotive my entire life but then I joined the Marines as an Electro-Optical Orndnace man. I learned how to turn wrenches and set gaskets and shit torque specs, electrically diagnostics, tolerances and other shit that mostly pertaining to missile launchers and turrets and stuff and I liked it. So then I bought my first car (I'd had ones before but my dad bought if for me so I took it for granted) and it was a 99 jeep wrangler with a straight 6 4.0L engine, bought a Haynes manual and some tools and started doing my own maintenance using the skills i learned in the marines like oil changes brake pads, rotors, spark plugs wires and all that. Next thing I knew I was dropping fuel tanks, changing fuel pumps, fixing smog leaks, rewiring electrical, cleaning throttlesand replacing exhaust manifolds and shit like that. And it just kind of built on from there. I ended up getting a part time job at autzone even thiugh im still active dutt and I learn a lot everyday from DIY mechanics who come in to buy parts from us, the see that I'm interested so they teach me things here and there.

how can a regular get a part time job?
What's this panel called?
I need to order a new one and the guy at the dealership couldn't figure out wtf I was talking about no matter how much I explained it to him.

Only 3 pics i got of the car unfortunately.

Hey /o/ what are you working on this weekend?
Yesterday I pulled out the auto trans for the manual swap as well as the rear diff. Got the new rear diff installed. Going to be working on the engine today. Need to check some valve lash and hopefully all checks out and I can just start piecing it back together.

Unfucking the electrical in my MR2
dropping a new head on my Saab
Hopefully, the Metro and Z3 will pass smog as well
My donor engine had lost time in its accident and had bent valves in 1 and 3. Pulled both sides off and ordered new valves. Then sent the heads to the machine shop. They came back looking great. Replaced the bent valves, cleaned the rest and lapped the seats. New valve stem seals, head-gaskets and bolts went on.

What went wrong on the Saab?
>pic related starts tailgating you
>open lanes of traffic on both sides of you
>big tuff trug ricer keeps tailgaiting
>retro fitted HID's blinding your vision
wat do?
do truck ricers actually think they're intimidating?
>>15047072
What I do to all tailgating assholes. Slow down to 10-15 under the limit, match slowest car in the lane next to me, then slowly increase if douche nozzle tries to gun it around.
I have full coverage, so they can do whatever to my car and I don't care, for the aggressive ones I keep a rugar p226 under my seat if the need arises.
>>15047072
>wat do?
I just raise the rear window shade.
I brake to a complete stop every single time.

This one actually looks pretty cool.
What the fuck is going on here /o/?
This shop near me in Cincinnati is buying low mileage old BMWs, detailing them, fixing them up slightly, then quadrupling their money on resale.
Why is it working?
>>15046703
Those are e30 M3s, anon. They're in demand, currently, and thus cost a lot.

Why? I know they're amazing handing cars but THAT amazing?
Air cooled Porsches aren't going for that much
Is it a bad idea that I really want one? Test drove a Trailhawk innawoods and it was super comfy, the adjustable off-road settings were nice, and it was able to handle some decent off-road obstacles. Sure, it wasn't clearing boulders, but for what I'm going to be using it for I don't need a boulder climber, I need an off-roader.
What kind of offroading do you want to do OP? Honestly there's always some fruit that tries to bring glorified minivans to offroad events and they end up like pic related every fucking 10 seconds. Don't be that guy OP.
Their bretty cool honestly especially the turbo stick ones. They are quick.

Absolutely disgusting.

Alright, I know nothing about American cars or trucks other than the "Ford sucks" and "Chevy sucks" memes (if they are that) Im looking for a small truck with a 4 or 6 cylinder for the best gas mileage possible, reliable engine and trans, and low price (Tacomas are fucking expensive) my first choice is a Ranger, '98-00 or so if I can but other opinions would be great
They are good trucks but I would get a newer one than that. People tend to beat the piss out of them and don't maintain them.
I had an 02 Chevy s10. It was 4 cylinder and I wish I'd gotten to the v6. The gas mileage wasn't anything impressive but it seriously lacked power.
Pic related
>>15046043
4 cylinder rangers get like low-mid 20s mpg and are pretty reliable. 3.0 v6 gets high teen mpg, makes no power, but will last to the heat death of the universe. 4.0 v6 makes some power and same mpg. I have a 2000 rwd 5 speed 3.0, I'll be happy to answer any questions.
