how didnt it? 95% of Subarus are overrated the same as vaping is, the Boxer engine is a horrible design that chews through headgaskets and invevitably leaks oil because the engines design pools oil into one side at the valvecovers. the only good Subarus were the cars and trucks with straight 4 like Justy and Sambar

it's all marketing. Let me break it down for you.

>American cars were generally shit in the 2000s, and muscles cars were seen as an old man's cars as well. Muh 1st gen nostalgia.
>Japanese cars were seen as the cool young person's car due to fast-n-furious ricer culture, which was an exporting of the 90's japanese street racing glory days.

So, Japanese cars were the choice and the options were limited. Other than the 350Z, Evo, and WRX what was there? The GT-R, Supra, GTO, RX-7, Silvia, etc. were all dead by the time the WRX rolled out in the US (2002). Combined with the COLIN MCRAE WRC CHAMP marketing, lack of competition, fast-n-furious, and the fact that WRX was cheaper than the Evo, people defaulted to the WRX.

So the WRX was the popular young man's sports car of the canerous era of US culture known as the 2000's, and with it comes vape/weed/monster/dudebro fuck boy-ness.

Also as an aside. The GC8 WRX because it was never released in the USA, and is still illegal there, has escaped the vape label. Its really only the blob/bug/hawkeye that embody that stereotype.

As much as I lament the rise of the shitbox crossover, they are much more ergonomic to live with when getting children in and out of child seats, especially because they have to be in the fucking things until they're eight these days. And you get more cargo capacity for a significantly smaller footprint, and we're better off if the rest of the traffic out there took up a lesser area.

Having said all that, I'd sooner buy a wagon like pic related in OP over its more or less direct competitor, the Ford Territory (which ironically is more car like than the shitbox ute based Falcon wagons it replaced).

You can get hard wired ones that run about $20-30 that'll read and clear codes that look like your pic.

The Bluetooth ones have other functions, you can basically use your smartphone to display additional gauges.
