Thoughts on the threats made against U.S schools this morning? LA has closed over 900 schools, effecting 640,000+ students.

New York claims to have gotten a similar threat, and is treating it as a hoax.

Apparently a nerve agent was threatened to be used -- Thus the comments by the NYPD saying it references an episode of Homeland.

Anon over on /b/ mentioned Louisiana similar activity, but has been unconfirmed.

>TALLINN (Sputnik) — The Estonian Interior Ministry has allocated some 500,000 euros ($547,000) to buy unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to protect the country's border with Russia, the Estonian interior minister said Monday.

>"There are areas on our external border, where a foot patrol can not reach. That's why unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones should be used to deal with border incidents faster and more efficiently", Hanno Pevkur said, as quoted by the Estonian daily Postimees.
He added that UAVs would help to detect violations more thoroughly, because they would help to provide a better overview of the area when compared to border officers on foot.

>According to the Estonian Interior Ministry, drones could be used to collect evidences of criminal activity, such as illegal border crossings, smuggling and human trafficking.

>In August, Estonia announced plans to construct a 108-kilometer-long (67-mile) wall on the land section of its eastern border, to prevent illegal crossings.

>The European Parliament is set to vote on Tuesday on new rules that could see teenagers banned from internet services such as Facebook, social media, messaging services or anything that processes their data, without explicit consent from their parent or guardian.

I'm sorry, but as a teenager who grew up on the internet into the adult he is today, I wouldn't have survived if I didn't have the internet
hazard a guess that applies to you too

this is the most basic type of censorship, in my opinion, and it's completely abhorrent

teenagers need to be given the freedom to explore their own minds, and these days. the internet is fucking crucial in doing that

if you don't give them that freedom, you condemn them

A Wikileaks post published on The Nation shows that the Obama Administration fought to keep Haitian wages at 31 cents an hour.

(This article was taken down by The Nation due to an embargo, but it was excerpted at Columbia Journalism Review.)

It started when Haiti passed a law two years ago raising its minimum wage to 61 cents an hour. According to an embassy cable:

This infuriated American corporations like Hanes and Levi Strauss that pay Haitians slave wages to sew their clothes. They said they would only fork over a seven-cent-an-hour increase, and they got the State Department involved. The U.S. ambassador put pressure on Haiti’s president, who duly carved out a $3 a day minimum wage for textile companies (the U.S. minimum wage, which itself is very low, works out to $58 a day).

Haiti has about 25,000 garment workers. If you paid each of them $2 a day more, it would cost their employers $50,000 per working day, or about $12.5 million a year ... As of last year Hanes had 3,200 Haitians making t-shirts for it. Paying each of them two bucks a day more would cost it about $1.6 million a year. Hanesbrands Incorporated made $211 million on $4.3 billion in sales last year.

Thanks to U.S. intervention, the minimum was raised only to 31 cents.

These papers have come to light thanks to Haiti Liberte, a small Haitian n

I feel like saying it was the Obama administration is kind of disingenuous though, isn't it? If what the report says is true then it was the State Department, and then only a few well connected individuals out of that.

Just trying to moderate the vitriol :P

"RIYADH: Saudi Arabia announced yesterday the formation of a military coalition of 34 countries to fight “terrorism” in the Islamic world, in the latest sign of a more assertive foreign policy by the kingdom. The regional Sunni power said the alliance would share intelligence, combat violent ideology and deploy troops if necessary. “Nothing is off the table. A number of countries are in desperate need of assistance,” Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir said. “Terrorism has hit Islamic countries. It is time that the Islamic world takes a stand,” he told reporters in Paris..."

Looks like the Islamic world is finally standing up. I've always said it should be Islamic countries like Saudi Arabia who need to do something about the rise of extremists. Western countries bombing only leads to future recruits against us friends and families get killed by proximity. Seeing their fellow Muslims fighting against extremism way help Daesh lose some momentum.

I don't think a Mars colony could be self-sustaining in the near future.
If we set it up and then WW3 turns us anti-technology, then the Martians would be fucked.
>>
>>8806
How about Venus? We get a couple of big space shields in the right spot then hydrate Venus atmosphere then we'll have Earth 2 way faster than trying for Mars...
>>
>>8808
Self-sustaining includes food, air conditioning and lots of other complicated stuff that on Earth requires many specialized factories that are spread out over a large area plus huge fields to grow the resources.
Now you're going to tell me you're going to have them built on hovering platforms on Venus within the next 100 or so years?

Worked for a net neutrality activist group for a while, there are people assigned in different activist groups to sift through these bills and see if they tried to put another rider in there since it's become such a common thing. Of course there always is one, and of course it's one in a fuckton of other riders. It's just the net neutrality camp that makes the most noise about it.

That does fortunately call to attention the existence of riders, which are bullshit because these legislators don't know how to pass laws like proper lawmakers -- but hey, that's Congress for you.
>>

It makes me sad that it's up to clickbait merchants like Huffpo to report on this story.
