I don't go out of my way to show people around me weird artists. If I want to show a band to someone I generally show them bands I think they'll like, but I honestly make no effort to keep any band I like secret.

You're going to get a lot of edge lords in here saying yes, and that those types of albums are for fake depressed tumblr kids or whatever, but I'd say that generally speaking, no.

If you were sincerely connecting with a work like that, then I don't really see any reason for your appreciation to fade. Sure you might visit it less often or find it harder to relate to if your personal circumstances change, but again, if your enjoyment of it was sincere then you'd still likely have some kind of relation to it.

Not to mention that most of those types of albums are not nearly as one dimensional as people make them out to be. For example, I find a lot of Nick Drake's material to be unexpectedly hopeful and optimistic, even some songs off of Pink Moon. I don't think there's any reason to "outgrow" something like that.

I don't know, I just think it's a bit absurd to hear a bunch of 20 year olds talk about how they're too mature to listen to an album about a 35 year old alcoholic or something like that. This relatively new trend on here to be dismissive towards music with any kind of sentimentality, as if these kinds feelings haven't been a key element of art for literally thousands of years, is really dumb and I hope it dies.
