Is it normal to outgrow "sad" music after it being almost all you listen to? I'm talking Elliott Smith, pic related, etc.
You're going to get a lot of edge lords in here saying yes, and that those types of albums are for fake depressed tumblr kids or whatever, but I'd say that generally speaking, no.
If you were sincerely connecting with a work like that, then I don't really see any reason for your appreciation to fade. Sure you might visit it less often or find it harder to relate to if your personal circumstances change, but again, if your enjoyment of it was sincere then you'd still likely have some kind of relation to it.
Not to mention that most of those types of albums are not nearly as one dimensional as people make them out to be. For example, I find a lot of Nick Drake's material to be unexpectedly hopeful and optimistic, even some songs off of Pink Moon. I don't think there's any reason to "outgrow" something like that.
I don't know, I just think it's a bit absurd to hear a bunch of 20 year olds talk about how they're too mature to listen to an album about a 35 year old alcoholic or something like that. This relatively new trend on here to be dismissive towards music with any kind of sentimentality, as if these kinds feelings haven't been a key element of art for literally thousands of years, is really dumb and I hope it dies.

I don't think he's reffering to the act of drinking or taking the author's issues to heart, rather the social and emotional implications that come with entering a state of stagnation and depression

this anon has a point
maybe you're not in the mood for it as much as you were in some other time, but if you actually really like it, times will come when you'll find yourself in the mood for it again. I don't really listen to Pink Moon every single week for example, but it's definitely one of the albums I connected the most with and maybe the only one that can actually make me cry

Yeah I've had the Glow pt 2 in rotation since I was 15, I'm 21 now. There's no end. If anything it's grown on me more
