It's a sad song, certainly, and the song makes me feel sad in a kind of beautiful way that isn't anything like actual sadness. I don't think I feel sad for John Wayne Gacy, though. I think I mostly just feel sad that life is so bizarre and lonely and scary. Something about the human condition, idunno.

How come I can listen to like 80s and 90s punk and feel fine but stuff like this just feels childish and petty

When I first discovered "non-mainstream" music it was a genuinely exciting time because my mind was being exposed to all these new forms of artistic self-expression, which were original but also accessible, and introducing me to many artists who I could identify with on a deeper level.

When I became a music snob it was an issue of one-upmanship, wearing my taste like a badge and trying to have better, more fashionably obscure, or just more obscure taste than others. People would post charts full of albums with no titles because they wanted to be mysterious. It's a pissing contest.

When I fell deep into music obsession I stopped enjoying the act of listening to music. It was like a second job where I would get home and listen to stuff, then give it a rating, but did not enjoy the process at all.

When I finally became sick of the whole thing I gave up on the hobby and stuck the couple genres I like. My life has been noticeably better since then.

It helps to diversify your interests in order to avoid defining yourself (and your value) on the basis of one or two arbitrary hobbies.

I'll either jam until I come up with a tasty lick or I'll just let a melody pop into my head during the day and try to get it out. After I have a foundation everything just kind of comes to me. Also I have a bass player that I write with, so that helps.

Play power chords until I find something that sounds like a good riff
Talk to my drummer about what tempo I want to play it at and they make a drum beat and I say yes or no
Talk to bassist and they either play my root notes or do something different i don't know
Talk to keyboardist and say you're smart enough to know what'll sound good and if it doesn't repeat this process

I typically start with the title. A good title can world-build the rest of the track (even things like genre or aesthetic). I know this will seem like a shitposty response, but honestly, the title is where most of my work goes when I'm writing for myself or writing songs to sell

It's a great record, tons of replay value and truly interesting song structures with an astonishing production to boot. But don't expect anyone without any patience to enjoy it.. meaning you won't find many here willing to discuss, let alone listen, to this album.
My only gripe with the album at this point is that We A Family is an absolutely unbearable closer for me personally.
