Am i obliged to write story if i write in prose? I just like sound of words and comfy referenced senteces that looks fancy, i am not interested in writing story. I am not interested in writing poetry either
The prose police might issue a fine but if you skip town they probably won't chase after you. They're generally more concerned with overdue library books.

Maybe try a Naked Lunch approach?
I think you may end up subconsciously adhering to some semblance of a plot though.

Go back to sleep, Earwicker.
What books focus on a protagonist with a specific personality disorder or an extremely anti-social (thought no harmful towards others) one at least?

Just finished reading The Gunslinger. I've heard that this is by far the worst book in the series. Does it get that much better? I'm already not crazy about King. Also, are they in Purgatory or what?
Lol who told you that?
The Gunslinger is probably the best book in the series. Maybe Wizard and Glass if you have already bought into the characters.
It mostly gets worse as it goes, and some of the books are downright awful.

I've only read the first four, way back when that was all there was. I enjoyed it at the time, but is it worth finishing or should I just preserve the memories of the series that I have?

Nah, m8. You sure you finished reading it?

jeez, that's weak. go read a book or something.
Hello friends.
I have always liked to read a good book; since I was a kid.
I have read and re-read almost all the 'classics' of literature as well as a substantial amount of philosophy.
I have, however, never read any poetry other than the 4 or 5 they made us analyze in high school. I've been wondering if maybe it's about time I try and get into some poetry. Where should I start (probably the Greeks again, but what specifically) and are there any specific collections I should look out for?

Is Philip Dwyer's biography the number 1 book on Napoleon?
Roberts gets a lot of respect around here but I haven't read either.
Chandler is a more specific and advanced text if you want to know more about Napoleon's actual battles, with diagrams, troop counts, etc.
>>7974431
got anything to say about dwyer?
>>7974468
Never read him but I have a buddy who loved his "path to power." Apparently it's a great intro to the non-military aspects of Napoleon, and focuses on his politics and then his propaganda.

I don't know exactly where to ask this, and it's not essentially /lit/ related, so I apologize for that.
But I know most people here are working on reading and writing, which means spending a lot of time engaging brilliant/genius work while trying to increase our own skills.I was wondering if anyone else has noticed that this poses a unique (and very serious) danger regarding ego.
Certain writers achieve extraordinary fame, and command the highest levels of respect, influence and admiration an individual can have. It goes far beyond what a television star or a politician might hope for.
How do you (you personally, you right there!) keep your mind on the prize, keep your ego in check, and avoid crippling self doubt or setting goals too high?
I'm not asking for advice, I'm just wondering how others deal with this. For my part I've started noticing that my entire life has been really disrupted by this, that it perhaps goes back many years, to those first experiences that suggested "you there, might just be something special." There's a very real fear that my life will have substantially less meaning/purpose if I turn out to be not-so-talented. Before you accuse me of being silly, just make sure you're not talking to yourself.
>>7974219
You have to realize that no matter how talented you are, you're not going to amount to anything unless you bust your ass every single day. I'm currently working on a PhD in mathematics and it seems like most people just assume that I made it this far (which is really not that far at all) because I got lucky genetically. But what they don't realize is how much work/sacrifice I put in to get where I'm at (they were at parties, they were having girlfriends, they were getting married, they were having kids, etc.- I was doing math).
Also, a healthy dose of self-hatred can be helpful when you're feeling high on yourself.
>>7974254
Oof, if I came off like a humble-bragging douche, I apologize.
Work hard, hate yourself. That's all it takes.
>>7974254
>>7974261
While I find these comments worthwhile and interesting, I should again say that this is not an advice thread, so perchance the posts that follow might say "I do ...." rather "you ought..."
To the point, my concern specifically, should I ask for advice after all, is with
>There's a very real fear that my life will have substantially less meaning/purpose if I turn out to be not-so-talented.
It is hard for me not to decide that, if literature is valuable, purposeful, meaningful, then so is writing great literature. Then so must a life in ignorance or mediocrity be devoid of exactly this value, purpose and meaning.
And who are you,

He's doing the fans a mercy. He's hoping they realize genre shit is worthless before the next book comes out.
I don't think an author ever has an obligation to rush themselves because fans are impatient, but he really should have put 100% of his focus on cranking out the main books as soon as he signed his deal with HBO.
My aunt gave me this book when I was younger and I have never read it. Is it worthy my time?
It would have been worth your time back then, yes.
>implying your time is worth anything
You could probably read that book in a few hours that you would have spent shitposting and looking at pornography anyway

Yeah, Richard Adams is a great writer of naturalistic prose, his books are wonderful irrespective of age, though Watership Down is probably best enjoyed young.
It's surprisingly hardcore for a book about rabbits, there's a lot of death and hierarchical brutality.
Shardik is another Richard Adams book, i't's aimed at a more mature audience, I read it semi-recently and loved it do death.
Ladies and Gentlemen the undisputed, uncontested GOAT, William Butler Yeats.
Discuss.
I would like to dispute this

I'm more of a Crowley man myself.
Cliches that have been done to death:
The protagonist in a coming of age story discovers a Playboy/adult magazine. Terrible, lazy writing.
What are some other eyerollingly overused tropes?
That's not really cliché, that's something that used to happen. It happened to me.
>>7974008
Me too but it is nevertheless a lazy and absurdly overdone method of representing a character's sexual awakening.
>>7974020
What brought it to mind was that this was recently done on Better Call Saul (a show that typically features excellent writing) in a flashback sequence wherein the main character witnesses his meek, gullible father be conned out of money, after which the conman lectures him about the dog eat dog nature of the world, leading him to despise his father and steal a few dollars out of his wallet. His discovery of the adult magazine took place immediately before all of this, juxtaposing his sexual awakening with his subsequent moral corruption. I had to roll my eyes. It was the first time I really recognized the trope for what it was, despite the fact that it was employed in an otherwise good scene in a good show.
I keep seeing people misspell "heroin" as "heroine".
Is this part of our patriarchal society? Subtly misspelling words, to conflate horrible drugs with accomplished females?
What other words have this sort of misspellings?
>>7973968
Hero was the girl, OP. Leander's the boy. They both died.
Heroin comes from the German "heroisch" combined with pharmaceutical branding conventions.
Heroine is just a result of Atticizing and Victorian flourish: especially heroḯne, a modern Greek cognate for heroin.
People confuse the three because they're retarded like you. You should write "these sorts" not "this sort".
