Did the translator fuck up or was Mishima a fucking hack?

I don't own the book or I'd check for you.

I would say it's probably on the editor, not the translator, but given that it's the name of the character and not the relationship that's wrong, it's possible it was Mishima. I can't imagine mis-translating katakana like that.

>given that it's the name of the character and not the relationship that's wrong
Good point actually.
I wanted to believe in Mishima though.
>>
>>8233613
Long shot: could be an error on the part of the character, rather than the author.

Heya /lit/. For class I have to choose one of the following books to read:

-The Help, Kathryn Stockett

-A Visit from the Goon Squad, Jennifer Egan

-An Invisible Thread, Laura Schroff, Alex Tresniowski

Not looking for the fastest or hardest book per se, just which one would be the most interesting/nice to read in general. Any suggestions on which one I should pick would be very much appreciated!

Dude, A visit from the goon squad sounds so lolworthy. I'd go for that just for the title.
>>
>>8233589

Aha, i know right. It sounds ridiculous. I'm asking because I literally have heard of none of these, but if nothing comes up I'll just go with that one for the title
>>
Goon Squad, the rest is garbage.

To people who read Japanese literature, do you have any recommendations for novels written in the Heisei period(1989-present)?

I search Amazon monthly for new Japanese novels, but to no avail. All I find are old novels from the Meiji - Taisho - Showa periods, novels by Keigo Higashino and other Mystery novelists, and Vertical inc.'s overpublished Crime and Hard-Boiled Detective fiction(I'm sick of these).

Please don't recommend me Haruki Murakami or Natsuo Kirino. I'm mostly looking for Psychological Thrillers and (Black) Comedy novels, but I'm open for any genres as long as they're not cookie-cutter Crime novels. Thanks

Minae Mizumura is what you're looking for, OP. She's excellent. Another one in translation is coming out next year too.
>>
>>8233521
The famous ones.
Battle Royale, the Ring cycle, Murakami Ryu's novels (really different from Haruki's. Much more gritty), Welcome to the NHK...
>>
>>8233538
Thank you so much. I'm aware of this Author. Unfortunately, her books are not what I'm looking for at the moment. I'm looking for non-autobiography novels based on modern Japan(Heisei period).
But I'll make sure to try her books sometime in the future.

>>8233545
Actually, I read all of the mentioned novels. Murakami Ryu is one of my favorite novelists, unfortunately his latest novels and quite few of his earlier novels are not published in English.

I'm not sure if /lit/ counts web novels or light novels as literature, but I'm looking for some good ones to read. Anything goes really, if it's good I'll read it, I'll check everything out that's posted here , thanks.

HIGH TEST

Would you abstain from buying a book if the cover was ugly?

It seems almost impossible to achieve aesthetic book shelves unless you have the funds for all leather-bound, everything's so fucking gaudy nowadays.

Is it going to be near impossible to find a decent hardback copy of this for around $20? A couple eBay sales for $70< are posted, which is just ridiculous. I want to read this but I don't enjoy reading on screens. I just read Omon Ra and enjoyed it enough. Does anyone own this book? Is it worth reading? Are there some websites I'm forgetting to check? Is it even worth the effort?

>>
>>8233342
Looking at the cover, there are zero circumstances in which this book is worth reading.
>>
Yeah, I know you'd think that. But it's by Victor Pelevin and he's a decent writer and from what I hear it's an absurdist novel about a lonely and sad banker who's obsessed with the number 34 and isn't just pokemon smut.

If you recall Odette being a huge whore you can read it. It's literally all you need to know. Proust skips a lot of what happened between the two (I suppose he returns to it in on of the later volumes, only read the first two). It's a completely different story really, it revolves around the protagonist and his days at the beach where he looks at pretty girls
