Idiot, it's even stated in the book that the Republic can never be realized, that's why it's an ideal.

Also, children riding on dogs to battle, lol, Plato was smart enough to make the whole thing a joke, but a joke one can learn from and better oneself. The book is not about statecraft, but the topic is justice, with a state as metaphor.

How come Ford Madox Ford receives absolutely no love on /lit/, what do you patricians think of Parades End and can we have a WW1 themed lit general since it is the Somme anniversary week?

simulread when?
>>
>>8233114

Just bought it today having never heard of Ford previously and it sounds like a great read, anyway my contribution to WW1 themed /lit/ since I thought of making a chart:
The Transylvania Trilogy-Banffy
Stoner-John Williams
In Search of Lost Time-Proust
Brideshead Revisited-Evelyn Waugh

It could be where WW1 is a backdrop or the lead up to it is heavily implied to affect it and everyone personally.

That would be interesting, we kind of missed the chance now when it would've been more fitting to start yesterday

Yes, good fantasy.

Belivable characters, good dialouge and witty humor. Writing quality is okay, even good considering it's genre.

Worth a read, Last Wish is short and if you like it you will like the rest too.

How do you read books /lit/?

Do you take notes, re-read, read essays?

Do you just read the book and move on?

What's the best way to experience a work?

The day after tomorrow the Western nations will cease to be relevant. The industry is nowadays in China, the scholars, engineers and scientists are Indian and all of the relevant new artists hail from Persia, Turkey and Nigeria.
As a short epitaph on our civilization let's have a dick measuring contest on whose language's gonna be more popular with scholars, once all our languages will be as dead as Latin, Sanskrit, Greek and Old Chinese.
I say they would learn German, since it will allow them to read our ever relevant philosophy along with our poetry which will be still sung to the tunes of Beethoven, Kurt Weill and Schubert aeons from now, on galaxies far far away.

This is exactly what made it great (and what you need to make it great again)
>its cultural elite is actually schooled in uk/france/u.s.a
for now. The Romans schooled their cultural elite in Greece and Greeks themselves looked to the east for inspiration in their archaic times.

We can't say for sure, OP. If he genuinely loved the Lord and Jesus and had the willingness and desire to repent, even though he may have fallen short, I think he'll be in Heaven. Ultimately, it's God's decision and not mine. Only God knows the hearts of man.

I'm 18 and have really been getting into writing the past few years, I really want to become an author and was just wondering what you guys thought of the first paragraph of the first chapter in my first book. I have written 2 chapters out of a possible 11 for the book, each chapter will have around 6000-8000 words and will consist of various different parts. For instance the first part is called "The Email" however that isn't the chapters name.

Listen its decent but there is a lot of awkwardness in just the two first paragraphs that will get you fisted by some /lit/ members.

I don't know context of the whole book, but unless the repetition is intentional, its not needed.

Second sentence you see her mother say she is going to be late for college.

Then college is referenced 1/4 of the way into the whole excerpt.

Then college is referenced again at the end.

Just reference college once. I don't know if that bugs other people but it really bugged me.

Either have the mom say, "Your going to be late for college!" (which, why would the mom have to specifically reference where she is going, shouldn't the main character know?) Then after the mom referenced going to college, don't say "she was trying to find everything she needed for college." just say, "she was trying to find everything she needed." nobody needs to be reminded she is going to college.

and then at the end you reference college a third time, as if the reader is so stupid that they forgot she was going to college.

Alternatively, you don't reference college till the end to create a mystery in the beginning as to draw readers in.

Mom says, "Your going to be late", she flies around the room trying to find everything she needs, we get the shoe reference so we know she isn't in high school, and then at the very end "she knew she couldn't; or she would be late for college", so then we know now she is in college, and it sets up the next paragraph.

Listen dude, I'm not gonna be here for 6000-8000 words for each chapter, and if your making mistakes like this 2 paragraphs in, I seriously question your writing skill.
>>
It's not very good. Several misuses of punctuation. The observations of the scene seem very forced; it's not set up very well. I agree with the poster above too. The repetition made it obnoxious.
>>
I really fucking hope this is a troll, this is fucking terrible. I'm glad someone already seems to have replied and explained to you why it's terrible, but I wanted to just say straight up that this is awful before I read the reply just in case this is bait.

Who cares? What do you benefit from the knowledge of what he was (or wasn't) accused of? How does it change the book? It's just a small tidbit of information that feeds the logic-hungry part of your brain.

Can you please recommend me some books about Learning how to learn/Improving one's memory?
Do you have any experience with this kind of literature? Is it worth reading?

No idea. Just reflect more on your life, decisions, days, discuss memories with friends, etc. It'll help. Also, read In Search of Lost Time. It will make you remember things you never thought you experienced. Also, write down your dreams.

He looked for answers in places that were already scavenged. Ken Kesey was in a better direction until idealism got the better of him. It seems that once you get a taste of the mystery, the mystery is more entertaining than the answer.
