I saw that post.
I hot a (you) from it.
I am trying to understand Heidegger's concept of "dasein" and how it relates to "the self." Anyone have any insight please?
It pretty much means "(Human) Being"
>>9152205
From what I've gathered "Dasein" in German literally means "there being" but Heidegger basically took that and shifted the definition? So is dasein a subjective "state" of being?
>>9152205
But not necessarily human. Human's possess Dasein but Dasein is not necessarily limited to humans. It's more of a phenomenological concept than a biological one.
This book is ugly. It's prose is ugly. I feel actively annoying when reading it, and I suspect it was part of the design
ya I dont like it either. stories should be easily intelligible, or at least NOT an academic wankfest
Can one say they appreciate art with a straight face and dislike Ulysses?
>>9152132
If you think Ulysses is not easily intelligible, you might want to repeat grade school
> 3rd year undergrad of uni
> still friendless so make an effort the start of this semester to get involved with some clubs
> Go to Book club meeting, involves a bookshop crawl where we visit local shops
> Psych myself up before I go, literally stay in the bathroom for an hour splashing water in my face and telling myself you have to be brave and be amongst people
> I get there and I'm silent, I'm alone and awkward
> Fuck, it's happened again
> Chinese girl comes up to know more about me, seems genuinely interested
> I fuck it up by mishearing her 4 times and mumbling a response
> shit shit, I've fucked it again
> She gives me "that look" and slinks away embarrassed by me
> Have to tough this out, stay with the group
> Another guy, comes up and makes conversation
> Goes a little better discuss Hunter S. Thompson a bit but says I look very unapproachable and scowling before he made the effort
>I assure him that's just my resting face and I'm sorry if he got that impression
> Try to change my expression the rest of the time by holding up my eyebrows and appearing more open
Have I ruined my chances /lit/? I feel like an ass involving myself with this, I just want a couple friends.
who the hell wants friends? are you gay or something?

Why does my sister have such shit taste? Trying to recommend her quality material (Spring Snow) but she keeps saying shit like this. What can I do to make her less of a plebeian?
Is she cute?

Wait til you both graduate from grade 5.
So is the lamy safari the best opt-in for babby's first fountain pen?
Does it smudge much?
Feel free to post any other stationary related stuff.
>>9149007
Depends on the ink and paper. Imo Pilot Metro is way better starter pen, cheaper too.
>>9149007
bump so to monitor this thread
I bought a Parker Vector about a month ago and it's been great. Doesn't seem to smudge at all (and I'm a lefty). Most of the criticism of it seems to be that you can't swap the nibs, so you're generally going to be using a medium. Plus it's light, durable and designed for ease of use.
How is it possible for an entire country to be so completely devoid of literary talent? I say this as a Canadian

Munro, early Ondaatje, and Leonard Cohen are all pretty strong examples of talent.
Why does /lit/ dismiss Ayn Rand? Is it because /lit/ is not smart enough to understand her philosophy?

Her philosophy may be alright, but her books are too long and boring.

If I have words for everything, then I will always be comfortable and can lie on the world like a big pillow, and nothing will feel bad and it will always be like I'm in my bed dozing and dreaming and I'll never, ever, ever have these thoughts and fears that feel like headaches, ever again.
Nothing will be ugly and everything will be comfy instead, when I have words for everything.
(rec books that give me words)
Try a dictionary.

You don't know how language-acquisition works. I'm not going to learn how to fix a car by reading the inventory of a toolbox. Neither am I going to useably increase my vocabulary with your dumb suggestion.
What asshole reads a dictionary? rec people who read dictionaries

Do you like Jan Kochanowski?
Szafuj gotowym bacznie!
Ostatek, jako zacznie,
Tak Fortuna niech kona: raczy li łaskawie,
Raczy li też inaczej; my siedziem w jej prawie.
U Fortuny to snadnie,
Że kto stojąc upadnie;
A który był dopiero u niej pod nogami,
Patrzajże go po chwili, a on gardzi nami.
Wszystko się dziwnie plecie
Na tym tu biednym świecie;
A kto by chciał rozumem wszystkiego dochodzić,
I zginie, a nie będzie umiał w to ugodzić.
Prózno ma mieć na pieczy
Śmiertelny wieczne rzeczy;
Dosyć na tym, kiedy wie, że go to nie minie,
Co z przejźrzenia Pańskiego od wieku mu płynie.
A nigdy nie zabłądzi,
Kto tak umysł narządzi,
Jakoby umiał szczęście i nieszczęście znosić,
Temu mężnie wytrzymać, w owym się nie wznosić.
Chwalę szczęście stateczne:
Nie chce li też być wieczne,
Spuszczę, com wziął, a w cnotę własną się ogarnę
I uczciwej chudoby bez posagu pragnę.
Nie umiem ja, gdy w żagle
Uderzą wiatry nagle,
Krzyżem padać i świętych przenajdować dary,
Aby łakomej wodzie tureckie towary
Bogactwa nie przydały
Wpadwszy gdzie między skały;
Tam ja bezpiecznym sercem i pełen otuchy
W równej fuście popłynę przez morskie rozruchy.
Oh, a polish. Could talk a little about the metrics of polish language? How it works, what's the polish poets preferences, fixed forms etc?

I'm not familiar with him. I would like to be deeper into Polish lit

Of course not, he's a medieval polish poet.

>Putting Lovecrafts works on the same level as Game of Thrones and Harry Potter
I know he is kinda hit or miss, but he didn't deserve this.
Just finished reading this, am I allowed to cry?
Don't see why not, it does tug on the heartstrings. I suppose that was the point though, it was to humanize and lend dignity to mentally challenged people. Who even today are seen as less than human.
>>9154958
>Who even today are seen as less than human.
Is being human supposed to mean something to a modern person? A fetus is human. Doesn't stop anyone from killing them by the tens of millions.
>>9154984
Humanity in part requires empathy. Seeing someone as less than human creates a viewpoint in which empathy need not reside.
If everyone saw retards as non-humanistic errors that need only be erased then no doubt they would carry that through. The book simply gave us a situation with its sci-fi concept of putting us in the shoes of a retarded man and giving him a device to allow to reflect upon his nature. This book simply wouldn't have worked if Charlie was not the protagonist.

>Some say, and it seems plausible, that Commodus Antoninus, his son and successor, was not begotten by him, but in adultery; they embroider this assertion, moreover, with a story current among the people. On a certain occasion, it was said, Faustina, the daughter of Pius and wife of Marcus, saw some gladiators pass by, and was inflamed for love of one of them; and afterwards, when suffering from a long illness, she confessed the passion to her husband. And when Marcus reported this to the Chaldeans, it was their advice that Faustina should bathe in his blood and thus couch with her husband. When this was done, the passion was indeed allayed, but their son Commodus was born a gladiator, not really a prince; for afterwards as emperor he fought almost a thousand gladiatorial bouts before the eyes of the people, as shall be related in his life. This story is considered plausible, as a matter of fact, for the reason that the son of so virtuous a prince had habits worse than any trainer of gladiators, any play-actor, any fighter in the arena, anything brought into existence from the offscourings of all dishonour and crime. Many writers, however, state that Commodus was really begotten in adultery, since it is generally known that Faustina, while at Caieta, used to choose out lovers from among the sailors and gladiators.
