Yuval Noah Harari and his work: good or pop-philosophy garbage for the plebs?

I specifically mean the following two:
>Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow
>Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind

I watched a talk he gave about Sapiens, and it seemed like he is fitting Dawkins's memes into an early historical context, making some commentary relevant in today's crisis situations.

Anyone read them? How are they?

Pretty cool in practice. Far ranging, rigorous, varied.

Even better if meant ironically, like more as a broad exercise rather than a sincere theoretical defense against an allegedly crumbling America.

Americas days as the number one power in the world are certainly over, that has nothing to do with Trump though.

>RELIGION ABSOLUTELY BTFO!!!! HOW CAN THEY EVEN COMPETE

In all seriousness, Hitchens' roast of religion is pretty solid. How can theists even respond to that? I have never seen an answer to atheism a part from ad hominem in the form of fedora memes.

I never thought that people would go back to religion in the west after the new atheist movement because, while it didn't bring anything new to the table, it still made the ideas of atheism accessible to a mainstream audience yet there's been a sudden, albeit small, revival of Christianity amongst the neo-conservative movement.

Is this return of religion just a consequence of the neo-conservative movement who in itself is just an inevitable contrarian answer to hardcore feminist and leftist taking it too far or is there anything of substance behind it?

Newfag, who has always had an appreciation for literature, but only lately have I started reading for information as well as pleasure.

Why would you want to be /lit/. The majority of people on this site are social outcasts, virgins, and generally unattractive people who cling on to being "well-read" for a sense of consistent identity because they're so utterly insecure. Of course, this lack of authenticity is apparent when you see people wanking off over the same meme books (often shitty postmodern doorstoppers that aren't easily accessible to 'le evil normies', the sole reason for their being read).
As you will undoubtedly also have noticed, this thread isn't actually about literature, but rather about constituting your own idealized self-image against such evil forces as liberals, women, 'normies', and people who don't read. Hence all the threads about reddit, women, nonwhites, postmodernism/continental philosophy/Frenchies/feminism/booktubers/atheists etc.

In short, start with the Greeks and don't ever come on here again

As you can see I am particularly interested in the covert crimes of state, the so called 'deep state' as Peter Dale Scott has called it, and a bit of classical history

I have never understood the fascination with Garry Webb. He simply repackaged the work Alfred W. McCoy, Bob Parry, and others did in the 1980s covering the Contra Cocaine connection
And I already have Politics of Heroin and Crimes of Patriots
Should get Parrys book

You can read short stories if novels are too long for you.
>>
It's not if you actually don't enjoy reading it, but if it's like that with every book over 100 pages then I think you need to make an effort. In general, though, it is not necessary to read stuff you don't like, just remember to challenge yourself from time to time.
>>
If you recently started reading, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you're probably either reading A) Crap, or B) Things which just do not interest you.

I don't think you'd have trouble finishing something you enjoyed a lot, unless it was extremely long, like Wealth of Nations.

Which genres interest you the most, so we can suggest some things for you.

Where were the poets between the 1th and 11th century, /lit/?

The last gret poet we had was Juvenal, and then... nothing until the troubadours. That's like 10 centuries without poetry in the Occident. Where were the poets? There's any book that deal with this problem?

It's all poetry til 17th century.
>>
There's this guy

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prudentius
>>
>1th [...] century
lmao

they were certainly around, anon, but a large part of the problem likely has to do with the fragility of manuscripts and the condition in which they were kept. also, it is almost certainly the case that most poetry of the time (especially in now-England) existed in the oral tradition and was rarely transcribed, which again was no guarantee that the texts would survive to be copied by the moderns.

there's a reason we call them the "Dark" Ages, because only very little of the record had survived to modernity (the beginning of print culture, I mean)

I just got back from watching Hamilton and it was surprisingly well written and every bit worth the hype. I think it will revolutionize Broadway with it's unconventional but long contemporary score, long awaited among plays/musicals. I also loved how much they were able to express and make contemporary audience identify with the characters by casting your 21st century everymen and women, specifically POC. Seeing them in this role really allows for a new level of empathy I don't think audiences would have if they were witnessing a bunch of old white men.

but what solutions does he offer?

I recently watched his interview with the BBC. He advocated a more welfare orientated state governed society without ties to Communism.

But is that all he has to offer? I like him a lot but he doesn't seem to offer any practical solutions for the future. He does a brilliant job of explaining desires, dreams and ideology but he doesn't seem to provide a well formulated plan for the future.

Anyone disagree?
26 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
He can't offer solutions, really. He's a philosophy, not a policy guy. Neither can Badiou or hundreds of other Marxists beyond theorizing what revolution might look like. Marxism is worth reading critically but it's not a blueprint for action anymore.

He's told us how ideology works, and that's a pretty good contribution. He knows it's techno-dystopian nightmare from here and basically wants us not to be completely seduced by the ideological Matrix as it happens. Which it will.

"Think capitalism so that it doesn't think you." I read that today, it made sense. Mass social action beyond hysterical idpol virtue-signaling (or the Islamic State) is done. Just don't be a mindless neoliberal retard, plan for the future and use ya head. Beyond this what could anybody propose?

This is not to say something won't happen. Invariably it will. Bannon is mobilizing his team just as much as the left is. But it's ideology on both sides.
