Hello,

This is my first thread, english is not my first language, and i used to just lurk, more in the past, less now.

I found this blog, and i dont know why it fascinated me.

Its about this pretentious twat, that read a bunch of a books and made small reviews.

He nevers mentions the prose (as in the "poetical" qualities of the prose) even in a review about Moby Dick.

He finds Stoner uninteresting and dull (i could not disagree more, i think its a beautiful book) and praises Blood Meridian.

I find his opinions about books and his pretentiouness endearing in a WEIRD way, like i want to try to understand all his views holistically (bear with me)

anyways, have a fucking look yourselves

ps: he also has some fiction he wrote (check the title)

https://triumphofthenow.com/2013/10/24/simulating-cunnilingus-on-a-fried-egg-sandwich/

and his "review" of Stoner made me mad.

COULDNT HE FIND ANY BEAUTY IN IT CMON.

Sorry forgot to include it in the original post

heres the stoner review

https://triumphofthenow.com/2014/02/17/review-stoner-by-john-williams/

"Stoner is weak in many places. Women are characterised appallingly, and there is the normalisation of inter-marital rape. This is mentioned but then ignored, forgotten about. To a modern reader, this is a pretty serious offence. Stoner is, other than when raping his wife, incredibly passive, he lets every mediocre event of his mediocre life wash over him. When he seems to find happiness in romance with his lover, he lets it fall apart; when he has arguments with other members of his faculty who later get promoted and stop his career or reputation from developing, he doesn’t move to a different university, he just nods and takes the stasis."
Seriously, look at this fucking retarded opinion.

But the guy actually had the trouble of writing thousands of this reviews, and he enjoyed and read a lot of books that I read, and that i suspect /lit/ has read as well.

Discover for yourselves.

Im finding it hard to express myself, i wish i could just sit any of you guys down with me next to the computer so i could show why this blog is GOLD in a cringy, makes me wanna read more (maybe cause im in asshole as well).

Is there any redeemable literary value in this book at all?

I dont have much interest in science-fiction, and i dont have any interest or much knowledge at all in 'cyberpunk,' but ive heard much about it being a 'revolutionary' book for its genre

everything ive heard of this seems to come from greasy, ugly, video gaming and anime loving pseuds... but their sperglike fervor of this book kind of makes me at least want to pick it up

i'll probably read it next year or so but the question i want to ask is: will this book deliver anything more than a cheap story and quick read

If you don't like science fiction, or cyberpunk, why would you bother reading the canonical cyberpunk novel?
>>
>>9491595
it sucks dick
>>
>>9491595
It's only important because it was the first inasmuch as it started the cyberpunk craze. Beyond that it's mediocre and other writers have done better things with the cyberpunk genre.

How do i get into existentialism? I am not really well read, mostly not interested in literature and I don't know much about philosophy except for some stoicism.
I am generally not interested in philosophy itself, just existentialism since I think it will help me grow as a person
Or should I really start with the greeks?

Any recommendations for what i should read?

Is age 46 the "27 Club" for authors?

These authors all died at 46.
>George Orwell
>Oscar Wilde
>H.P. Lovecraft
>Albert Camus
>David Foster Wallace
>Jack Kerouac

It's a little uncanny, isn't it?
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
It's probably not uncanny at all if you sit down and do the math.
>>
>>9490972

No
>>
>>9490972
Kerouac was 47 but that doesn't matter.

The 27 Club is a myth. It's just a phenomenon of romanticizing talented musicians who died very young after a string of them died in the 70s (Morrison, Hendrix, Joplin). The idea of a 27 Club was then perpetuated after Kurt Cobain's mother said "I told him not to join that stupid club" and Amy Winehouse's death made it here to stay. It's just people romanticizing dying young.

Statistically, more musicians die at age 28 then 27 yet there's no 28 Club. The same shit applies to authors. Famous people die at various ages. It all depends on many factors.

I'm trying to write a book that will appeal to the largest US demographic possible.

First: it will be a Kindle ebook, so it needs to be tailored to the Kindle's userbase.

Looks like Southerners and Midwesterners are not my main target market.

So first, I need something that appeals to the middle of the road female Starbucksy twentysomething college graduate from California or the East Coast north of DC.

It needs to be genre fiction, because that is what sells. Female protagonist. Romance sells very well, and younger women are open to it due to Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey.

I think some kind of paranormal book in a contemporary setting, because contemporary settings require very little imagination to understand or care about. Hence the popularity of Zombie Apocalypse stuff, which is essentially "the floor is lava" for adults.

I'm on the fence about how central the romance should be. Should it be romance that develops as a result of fighting monsters together, or between the human woman and the semi-monstrous Mr Handsome? I'm not sure if I want to alienate male readers entirely by having the protag fall in love with a serial killer with high cheekbones, but on the other hand, men are scrubs who don't buy many ebooks.

What do you think, /lit/?

geographical distribution isn't as good as an estimator as you think; most people in the US live in the suburbs, which not differ that much across the country except for the occasional climate (and even though, as most people travel in their vacations it's not hard to imagine the cold of new york or the hot summers in louisiana). you should check the nyt best sellers list, even though you'll probably find young adult is the biggest demography.

I read sci-fi and fantasy but I'm getting older and want to expand with some classics, maybe revisit stuff I read while in school with more experienced eyes. I'd like expand my knowledge and thinking abilities just for my own gratification(I a loser and I know that won;t change at this point in my life). Coming here makes me feel like an idiot for even trying and everything I think I might like to read gets shit on in /lit/ by somebody. How can I get motivated? Where do I start? Am I just wasting my time?

What makes good prose?

The most common criticism of my writing is that it is verbose and meandering, but 19th century writers and some Modernist writers spend multiple sentences just describing wind or grass (I don't mean to compare myself to Virginia Woolf or George Eliot)

Chekhov was a handsome guy

Anyway times have changed man you always need to adapt your language and expressions for the audience of the day. You can not write as a Victorian now anymore than Victorians could write like Milton. People had different priorities and interests in writing back then and complex language has become seen as unimpressive and lacks emotional impact.

This is true, unless you are a visionary whose work is so good that it transcends the tastes of its time and inspires others, sparking a huge shift in what's considered acceptable in contemporary literature.

You probably aren't that, but it's something to aim for.
>>
>>9490353
I just find all the Hemingway style prose to be boring. I don't hate it, but I enjoy complex prose.

Really, though, you're right. It's just one of my peculiarities.
