>be told Hemingway sucks and is overacted for my whole university
>everyone on the internet says Hemingway sucks
>"less is less" "terrible female characters" "macho posturing"
> start reading Carver, Beattie, Richard Ford, and the other people edited by Lish
> realize they are all a bit like Hemingway stories I read in university
> go back and start reading Hemingway
> read In Our Time, major novels
> prose is totally free of lyrical look at me bullshit I see everywhere, no spending 1 page describing outfits, just straight to the story. Just writes what he wants to tell you about with room for interpretation instead of hand-holding.
> realize that Lish crowd are extensions of Hemingway into contemporary life
>realize B.E.E is Hemingway for yuppies.
> realize all of flash fiction is aping early Hemingway
> realize George Saunders is an extension of Hemingway's dislike of phoniness into humor and corporate culture
> Tons of early metafiction is a reaction against Hemingway
> Realize Hemingway is rarely posturing, often has weak male characters trying to overcome their weakness, a lot of the typical male interest is just a rural upbringing and the 'posturing' accusation is urban snobbery
> Hemingway grasps how women are both wonderful (Something Comes to an End, For Whom The Bell Tolls) and terrible ( Sun Also Rises, Short and Happy Life of Francis Macomber)
> a lot of the "terrible women characters..." is just Hemingway being honest about how awful people are and how temporary things are
>realize Hemingway is actually great
>Actually listening to the opinion of a board full of redditors, /pol/e smokers, pseudo-intellectual 17 year olds who didn't start with the greeks, philosophy-cucks, and wanna be cultural elitists without the actual I.Q to establish a bed of elitism.
>Actually going to college
Nice.

DeLillo and McCarthy too
How big do you think Hemingway's shits were?
>he reads but doesn't write
>>9485503
Jokes on you, I don't read or write.
A thread died for this.
But it was probably a shitty thread, so that's not a bad thing in the end. /lit/ is now simply an endless stream of shit, a perpetuum shitile. Shit goes in and shit goes out, day and night. Like a star of shit that fuses tiny rabbit shits into proper turds and then breaks those down again, thus emanating the smell of shit for billions of years. The great ball of plasmatic diarrhea on the firmament, in the boundless cosmos it is what our planet revolves around.

I was wondering if you people could give me some suggestions of manga that deal with this theme:
>Personal growth (development) through effort and practice.
Some of my favorites in this line are Vagabond, Ikkyu, Buddha and Kokou no Hito.
I also like manga that are clearly made for adults and whose creators are greatly ambitious in an artistic, intellectual and even spiritual level, so I would also appreciate some suggestions on this line. I made a short list of titles that I think that fit in this pattern:
>Ayako
>Buddha
>The Book of Human Insects
>Phoenix
>Kokou no Hito
>Vagabond
>Real
>Barefoot Gen
>Berserk
>Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
>Akira
>Hajime no Ippo
>Ikkyu (unfortanelty I only found volumes 1 and 2 online; there are still volumes 2 and 3 left for me to read but I could find it for the life of me)
I would greatly appreciate suggestions.
*(tried this on /a/ already, but without success, so I am posting it now on the board on which I originally wanted to post – the quality of the minds and the emotional aspects of the psyche of the users is much better here)

I don't know if you've ever read Buraiden Gai by FKMT but you should check it out. It's my favorite manga along with Kokou no Hito. Similar themes as well imo.
About to dive into it as an ESL. What should I expect?
>>9485367
Jesus Christ just read it.
>>9485385
But I mean was it written for babies and children? Would I enjoy it being an adult and all? Just don't wanna get bored the fuck out since I have other matters to attend to like humping thicc bitches and stuff.
The book is outdated. In a way Dickens was Stephen King of Victorian era. There are many great contemporary books.
What are some books/essays on Time? Conceptions of Time, etc. Bonus points for stuff that will leave me spooked or mindfucked.
Read Kant, Bergson and Heidegger.
Augustine writes about time towards the end of the Confessions.
Borges
Thoughts on Une saison en Enfer?
I thought it as mesmerizing. The development from the Rimbaud bound with sonnets and French/Latin hexameters, the classically suited Rimbaud, slowly gets replaced with the disgusting, terrifying blank verse, FREE verse, prose poem Rimbaud -- denouncing the Symbolist split after Baudelaire, the even, uneven; the sublime, musical; etc. the Verlaine-Mallarmé split, making his own Movement of the Dissolution of all senses, and of his BOUND poetry.
Thoughts?
To add, it's like reading a diary desu; I am not even memeing, RIMBAUD was /ourguy/. And he still should be .. . .. . .

College is a dead end for me. I'll probably finish it eventually, but I know I'm not gonna last long being a wage cuck no matter how much shekels I earn.
Please recommend me something to read until the inevitable day comes. I like reading biographies about flawed people. I like Dennis Lehane, James Crumley, Cormac McCarthy and Brett Easton Ellis but I've read so much of their work it's time for something else.

as an indian who lives in india,I hate sjw western indian origin people they cry about privilege but have more privilege than 90% of the world THE FIRST WORLD PRIVILEGE .
Their identity is fragile as they have no connection to indian culture, art, tradition or literature but project their lack of indianess on white people by becoming WOKE and cursing western society.I mean your parents chose to go to western countries and there by rejected in some way india but these people go to college where professors tell them about White supremacy and then they pretend to be insightful but are really all drones
Learn a trade, OP. You may think im a parrot, but find something you somewhat enjoy doing. I too hate college and Im a terrible student. Im forcing myself to finish but when im done, im going to be a pilot. Fees/expenses are affordable over the time it takes to acquire enough hours to make real money with it, and until then ill continue working my shit retail job.
We're all gonna make it, brah
So I'm doing the lit project https://docs.google.com/document/d/1y8_RRaZW5X3xwztjZ4p0XeRplqebYwpmuNNpaN_TkgM/mobilebasic?pli=1
And I'm reading Bryan magee's story about philosophy and I'm on the part of stoics
It says they were the ones that thought of god as being pervasive throughout the universe instead of singularly located above in prototypical god fashion
My question is is this true and what else has philosophy done for Christianity in major ideas?
>>9484941
Lmao that is a gigantic fucking question. Read wiki pages on at least the neo platonists, stoics, and scholastics.
>>9484994
Yeah I didn't mean everything leading up to Christianity. I mean major ideas that influenced major themes of Christianity.
There really isn't a general page on this. If there's a good general work that'd be nice but I'm afraid people are quick to reference specific thinkers or movements.
It's a scholarly question
>T*rks, Arabs
>can maintain an inhabited society without fear of breakdown
Hah, yah funny
Are having friends worth it? Can you be mentally stable and alone?
I want to dip on my friends, my slight paranoia and antixey is making it way too stressful to keep talking to them.
I much prefer working hard and going to hobby groups time to time to get my social fix.
Iam doing alright relationship wise.
>>9484901
>Are having friends worth it?
Yes.
>can you be mentally stable and alone?
No.
>I want to dip on my friends, my slight paranoia and antixey is making it way too stressful to keep talking to them.
Find some friends more suited to your needs, retard.
>I much prefer working hard and going to hobby groups time to time to get my social fix.
Very good.
>Iam doing alright relationship wise.
Good.
>>9484901
Been slowly losing contact over the past 2 years till about a few months ago when it's been totally silent and I can say you can't really be mentally stable and alone. I'm sure you can stay somewhat sane by doing breathing exercises or some meditation shit but fuck having friends makes life way easier.
Just spend more time around people (who don't suck) and your paranoia/anxiety will go down. Easier said than done depending on your circumstance but there's really no other way.

What went wrong?
>>9484739
nothing it's a masterpiece
>>9484739
I actually bought this but haven't started to read it. What do you think is wrong with it?
>>9484880
I found the first half a bit of a slog. In that part of the book the pov sticks to the protagonists, an old married couple. The way they talk to each other is so tedious. Eventually the pov moves around a bit and things become more interesting.
There's something really lacking in Ishiguro's descriptions. Often we're given nothing more to go on than "a river", "a wood", "a plain". The novel's sense of place is about as strong as that of a text-based adventure game. Similarly an ogre or a pixie will appear, and "ogre" and "pixie" are considered to be sufficient information to give the reader.
I gather that upon release some people got their panties in a twist about an author of literary fiction stooping to write fantasy. I don't care that he wrote a fantasy novel, but I feel he wrote a second-rate one.
ITT: post your top five favourite poems and have others decide if you are a pleb.
>The sonnets
> Ode on a Grecian urn
>The raven
>Ozymandias
>The love song of J. Alfred Prufrock
As a side note, who is the best English poet of all time? Difficult question, because it is subjective, but let's try to reach a unanimous conclusion here. My vote is for Keats.
>>9484704
It's much easier to tier people with groups.
> God tier
> Great tier
> Good tier
> Bad tier
> Shit tier
Saying Keats is better than Shakespeare etc seems pretty disingenuous. Forcing someone to choose between equal poets isn't meaningful, you'd get a much better representation of the greatest poets by taking the union of everyone's god tier poets.
>>9484704
I can't answer the best English poet of all time, but my favorite is Gerard Manley Hopkins.
Here's a better idea.
Post your favorite
>sonnet
>hexameter
>blank verse
>free verse
>bonus choice
and judge others by them.

Any recommended reading for someone looking to walk the path of the Iron Pill? I know Evola get's thrown around a lot, but I honestly hated Revolt.
Also, I'd like help pinning down exactly what is degeneracy and what its opposite would be.

According to Der Antichrist, degeneracy is when an animal, a species, an individual loses its instincts, when it chooses, when it prefers what is harmful to it (section 6).
