To be able to tangibly reinforce the existing gender roles they'd have to have power, high numbers and influence. Obviously they don't have any of that. It's the majority of people that reinforce those roles. Trans people just obsessively abide by the gender roles for their desired sex because everyone dumps their sexism and expectations of what a man or woman should be onto trans people and they want to blend in as best they can to avoid that.
Also, they wouldn't be tolerated as their desired gender if they didn't do so because biologically they aren't their desired gender. They're more of an artificially induced intersex. A normal woman can refuse to shave, wear makeup and dress boyishly but she's still respected as a woman because she's biologically female. A trans woman does not have that luxury. To society, a woman is little more than her body and the intense scrutiny that comes with that is projected onto trans women. Just look at how people here put a vicious, borderline clinical effort into "clocking" a trans woman. You don't see that for trans men because men typically don't get that level of scrutiny. For them it's more about social status, competence in providing for and protecting their kin.

Hey lgbt. Not sure which board is best for this, but I read the rules and it seems like this might be the right place.
I have a life long friend that recently came out as a trans-woman. We're 30 years old, and this seems pretty late in life?
I'm having sort of a difficult time coming to terms with it....
Not socially. If he wants to wear dresses and makeup and stuff I'm cool with that. It's a bit strange to see, but we've always been super close and I'm not going to let some lipstick ruin our friendship.
My problem is that I have a hard to reconciling the whole sex transition thing. I have a few degrees. Molecular biology with a focus in the human genome. I have a minor is psychology. So on and so forth, and so while I can understand his shifted social role, I am having trouble.... agreeing with his sentiments on sex?
I have a really hard biological foundation for my knowledge on an organisms sex, which is pretty concrete.
The problem I'm having is that if I can't grasp it, I'm finding that I don't reliably... treat him the way he wants to be treated? That's the best way I can phrase it I think. Our interactions seemed more strained now and our friendship doesn't totally feel the same, because I feel like he doesn't believe that I... respect his new... persona?
I'm totally behind whatever he wants to do, but I'm worried it'll effect our friendship.
Any advice you guys can offer would be great.

I can never settle on the best way to say it, but I guess that I feel like he wants to be seen as a biological female and that my education prevents me from seeing that and it is effecting how comfortable he is around me.
I want to stay close to a really good friend, but this has just injected some tension between us and I'm not sure how best to deal with it.
