What did Japan even expect to gain by starting a war with America? What were her war aims? Surely they couldn't have thought they had a chance to conquer it. They were getting embargo'd but how would starting a war change that situation?

> They were getting embargo'd but how would starting a war change that situation?

I'm going to answer this one first.

Japan wants to continue the war in China at the very least, and keep a war economy going, which requires oil. Prior to this, they had been importing something like 80% of their oil from the U.S., who turned off the spigot in retaliation for the Japanese annexing Indo-China from Vichy France's government.

There is one major source of oil within the Japanese reach, what's now Indonesia, then a Dutch colony.

FDR had promised, publicly, to defend the interests of the Dutch Government-in-Exile, and the Japanese at the very least took this seriously, they thought that if they went into the NEI and seized the oil wells, America would retaliate.

>hat did Japan even expect to gain by starting a war with America? What were her war aims? Surely they couldn't have thought they had a chance to conquer it.

So to answer your first and main question, the plan was to hit the U.S. Pacific fleet real hard in a surprise attack, sink as many capital ships as possible. They gambled, erroneously, that the U.S. wouldn't commit to a long war, you'd have 6 months of shooting, a few ships sunk, and then they'd go home if things got too tough. By catching the U.S. with its proverbial pants down, they could eliminate any real threat for the duration of what they thought would be a short, limited war.

It turned out to be a grave miscalculation, in large part because of how America reacted to a "perfidious sneak attack."

One of my favorite alt-hist questions, one I don't think gets nearly enough attention, is what would have happened if the Japanese called FDR's bluff. Would America have actually declared war to defend the Indonesians? And if so, would it have been the total, almost holy war that historically developed, or could Japan's plan of fighting a short war and coming to the peace table with honor have actually happened?

Why did the Persians have such bad equipment during the wars with the Greeks? You get several classical sources that stated that Hoplites fighting Persian troops were almost like fighting unarmed men, that their weapons and armor were so useless in close combat that they might not have existed.

Why?

I mean, the Achaemenids had a lot of population and a lot of wealth to draw upon. How come they couldn't make bronze armor like the much smaller, poorer Greeks?

Why did the Persians have such bad equipment during the war with the Iraq (the 1980's one) and still managed to hold their own?

Because Persia heavily prioritized cavalry.

I would have to go digging for the exact page citation, but I remember studying Bava Metzia (one of the books in the Talmud), and there was a case of a woman suing her husband for personal injuries sustained while having sex.

His defense was that she injured herself using a dildo. They eventually decided that while in theory she could sue her husband for that kind of thing, there wasn't enough evidence to actually carry the case.

Even across maybe 1,400 years and a language I'm not fully familiar with, I could feel the cringe of the people writing it.

Augustus made an anti-kek law. If you caught yourself getting keked you could lawfully kill your wife and the bull. If you didn't kill the wife, you had to take her to court. Funny thing is that it was hardly ever applied, and when it happened to Augustus own daughter he had to prosecute and exile her.

Top notch diplomacy. Industrializing the republics at the right time. Not giving in to romantic idealism and trying to institute a global revolution too early in history. BTFO kulaks. BTFO nazis. Nice wardrobe.

What went wrong:
Overestimating the promises of Lysenkoism. Thinking Churchill's experiences with WWII would make him not an asshole that wanted to kill him. Not inventing a cure for polio.

Can someone here tell me the difference between Sri Lankan and Tamil people?

I've researched and researched, and could only find that they, by ethnicity, are the same people, but differ due to some regional/language issues.

So far, all I got was that they speak a different language and are a minority that just wanted land.

General Consensus states that the Tamil Tigers were are terrorist organization. My interest in this request is that my good friend is Sri Lankan but hates Tamil people, and claims that they started the war over literally nothing but greed.

I've talked to some Tamil people that said that Hindu is the devil and Sri Lankans need to "give up what belongs to the Tamils".

So I dunno.

TL;DR; small-town white kid who moved to a big-city wants the quick answer of the difference between the people of Sri Lanka and Tamil origin.

Tamils are from Tamil Nadu, the part of south India directly across from Sri Lanka. The majority population of Sri Lanka are the Sinhalese, who are more closely related to the Bengalese. There's a long history of both peoples on the island, Sinhalese have been there for at least 2000 years and probably more like 2500, while Tamil kings were ruling the island 1000 years ago. Vast majority of the Sinhalese are Buddhist, while most Tamils are Hindu. Tamils and Sinhalese worked together to reject British rule in the early 20th century, but the advent of democracy put the Tamils in a relatively bad position because they're a minority. Process of antagonization and embitterment continued through the Cold War with attempts to make Sinhalese the official language of the nation, pro-Sinhalese affirmative action in education, etc. Standard race war shit. Tamil Tigers began to assassinate with the goal of creating Tamil nation state in the north of the island, eventually growing into a larger insurgency which occupied a lot of the north for 20+ years. Obviously you can imagine how that, even after the government's eventual victory, has produced lasting race hate.
>>
>>363096
Fair enough. Same situation as the Palestinians and Arabs I guess.

Tamil's in Canada where I live are notorious for ripping-off black-culture (rap music, clothing, dummed-down English). That's why my Sinhalese buddy continues to hate them; because when he left towards the end of the War to Canada, he thought he'd meet like-minded Tamils, however, he was upset to realize that they brought their violence and attitude of entitlement with them.

Thanks man, makes a lot more sense now. I tried researching and found basically what you said, but with a lot more mumbo-jumbo that just made it seem more complicated then it needed to be.

As in, Rome was broken into, sacked and its entire population put to the sword or enslaved. It's erased from existence.

I imagine it would probably be pretty equal to the roman empire, if not greater.
The Carthaginians were far superior sailors. North Africa was extremely fertile too.
They might have spread east first, leaving the barbarians to the north until later.
Bumping for someone more learned than I to give an opinion
>>
>>363077
I'm kind of surprised at that. I had heard people suggest that Carthage's growth would have been much more restrained.
>>
>>363077
>The Carthaginians were far superior sailors.
Yeah it's not Rome raped them on that front from the invention of the corvus onward. It literally took then half a war to close the gap.
>North Africa was extremely fertile too.
No more than Italy, but less populous and with a very strong neighbour on each side preventing easy expansion.

Yeah I'm not seeing Carthage becoming anything mor than it was before the wars. Certainly not Rome tier, let alone greater (top kek).

honestly, the kievan rus is the only time russia has not been a flaming shithole for the majority of the population. Even during catherine "the great's" time most of the people lived in abject poverty and slavery. Sure in the Kievan Rus you were poor, but generally you owned animals and if not on marginal land, could live comfortably and independently.
