Beautiful names like
>Constantinople
>Byzantium
and then
>Instanbul
WHY?
>>371194
>implying Istanbul isn't a 10/10 name
The rest of the Turkish cities have turboshit names but Istanbul is fucking respectable.
>>371205
I dunno family I'm a sucker for all those accented letters everywhere, it was a pretty nice way of "westernizing" their language.
>>371205
It just means "Inner city".
It's lazy as fuck.
Plus it's historically nothing.
Byzantium and Constantinople are noble names.
How do the different Abrahamic faiths (especially Christianity sects) feel about killing?
>>371055
Murder is wrong. Killing within the bounds of law (war and punishment) is acceptable.
>>371060
Hypocrisy.
>>371085
Care to elaborate?
Religious people of /his/ : Do you proselytise?
If so, why? And how successful is it?
If not, why not?
>>371001
Orthodox Jew reporting in.
No, I don't proselytize. It's not our way, and it's just rude. If someone looks, is searching for God, I'll give my 2 cents, but to go banging on people's doors is counterproductive, and as often as not when it "works", you get shallow and superficial converts, not people who are in it to learn and understand.
>>371001
Longtime baptist son of a fuck reporting in.
Because of where I live, in the Northeast of the US, proselytizing is actually pretty hard. The local politics are super fucking partisan and religion gets lumped in with conservatives all the time up here, so public displays of faith are usually met with some ignorant comment about how I probably wanna lynch gays. Or they're catholic and I'm barking up the wrong tree.
Just having faith these days can call people to judge you, so I am not gonna go through the trouble of bothering people to convert when the sentiment is so negative.
Its pussyshit compared to the early Roman converts I probably shouldn't be complaining but, eh.
>>371050
>if someone looks, Is searching for god, i'll give my two cents
More like one amirite
How do I get back into the good graces of the Church lads?
I spent many years as an edge-lord, rejecting my faith, committing informal apostasy, worshipping other gods and demons (mostly as a joke) and just in general thinking I was better than my heritage and upbringing. Is confession enough to atone for this? How do I confess to being a fedora tipper for the better part of the last decade?
Also, discuss being a Catholic. No Orthodox funposting pls
>>370907
Pic related, we always find our sins to be unforgivable, but God died to atone for them. Confess your sins, hold nothing back and be unbound from the chains of edgelording sin.
Welcome home brother.
>>370907
Fun fact: Catholics are allowed to enter confession with a registered man of the Catholic Church. If that really is what you need to begin your transition back into the Faith, then do so. You could also do a quick google search for Catholic organizations in your area. Shelters, monasteries, soup kitchens, etc. Give them some of your money and time. Make friends with some of the other Church going people. Hell, they might just be faithful people who don't go to church.
I would not gauge your worth or devotion to God by how much you confess out loud. Be good to your fellow man, attend church when you can so the sermons don't leave your life (or every Sunday, like a good catholic), try to meet new people who don't pull you back into that fedora-tipping lifestyle, and as >>371040 says: we always find our sins to be unforgivable, but God died to atone for them. He loves you so much. He loves us all.
Welcome back
>>370907
Apologize with your heart, accept your penance like a man and from that day forward do better. Catholicism is a religion of WORKS not faith. being a "believer" or "filled with faith" or any of that other protestant nonsense isnt enough.
Again, your life and works will be the embodiment of your soul in action. Remember that.
How do you tell whether a person is actually part of a group and saying they aren't is a no true scotsman fallacy, or if that person really isn't part of that group despite that person saying so?
You grow up and stop using informal fallacies
>>370527
You clearly defines what it means to be part of said group, of course.
No true Scotsman is a fallacious fallacy. Or at least the example of a Scotsman is.
A Scotsman is a man with Scottish Nationality. Duh. I don't care if you think a man of African origin living in Scotland isn't Scottish, you're not the legal governing body deciding it.
The phrase should be No true Christian or some shit.
Today marks the 74th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
Let's get a thread on the war in the Pacific going.
Reminder that Japan surrendered solely due to the thread of Russian invasion.
Sorry to Fattyclaps, but maybe you can find a nice buffet to distract you from the uncomfortable truth.
>russians invading Japanese islands
>ever
Maybe after 15 years or so

We should have nuked then again, then. The fucking yellow peril is real.
Is this a good /his/ book? I'm going on a trip and I want something /his/ related to read.
Also, anyone have any other interesting /his/ related books to suggest?

Literally my bible
>>370456
This is one of my favorites
If there is a god, why should it be Catholicism, Protestantism, Judaism, Sunni, Shia, etc that monopolises what 'god' is?
In other words, lets assume that you definitely believe in a deity - why should you then have to follow any of the pre-established religions instead of ending your belief in a god right there?
God can mean many things and is up to many interpretations, and it does not equal religion.
You are confusing God with faith with religion
well you don't have to
>>370342
Because God would want us to know about His existence (otherwise we wouldn't be sapient), which in turn implies that one of the religions has to be true.
>"The Bible is none other than the voice of Him that sitteth upon the Throne! Every Book of it, every Chapter of it, every Verse of it, every word of it, every syllable of it ... every letter of it, is the direct utterance of the Most High!" - John William Burgon
how do you respond?
>>370238
"Is this man Coniah a despised broken idol? is he a vessel wherein is no pleasure? wherefore are they cast out, he and his seed, and are cast into a land which they know not?
O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of the LORD.
Thus saith the LORD, Write ye this man childless, a man that shall not prosper in his days: for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah. "
And then I point out that Matthew includes Jeconiah in Jesus' geneology.
>>370238
i dont, the man is a raving lunatic
That's, like, your opinion man. Also, the bible was put together by a bunch of clergymen over a period of centuries.
Why is being transgender more socially acceptable than being transracial when race is a social concept and gender/sex has physical connotations?
>race is a social construct
Please leave
>>370173
While it does have physical connotations as well, genetically there's not very much of a difference. I used to deny it too, but then I did some research
>>370171
Because racial identity isn't accepted as something someone just happens to have, whereas gender identity is an irreducible part of a person.
You are only black or white because others see you as such, but you are male or female because of the way you see yourself.
How do you actually "get into" history without taking a class? I tried watching documentaries of some subjects but I feel like it only gives me an incomplete picture. It isn't like a continuity in a fictional universe that you can follow one installment at a time and then know everything about. There is just too much happening at once to follow one country's events without knowing all the other country's events. I know much of the basics already but I want to start researching it in-depth.
>>370147
Read books then read more books.
Idk, I learned to code by reading C++ so I'm pretty spergy like that
>>370147
ever heard of a library?
>>370147
>How do I learn? Real life is not like my animes
Mods are asleep, post rockers.
YOU THOUGHT WRONG!
Tsundere, Heidegger, and Me is a Light Novel series about philosophers living in Japan as cute girls
-Leftmost: Heidegger
-2nd to her: Descartes
-Upper Girl: Spinoza
-Loli: Nietzsche
-Left of Loli: Hegel
-Right of Loli: Kant
-Lesbians: Berkley and Hume
>“Decartes is a haughty princess, Nietzsche is yandere, Heidegger is a long-haired cultural club leader.”
OK, but is it worth my time?

WEEBS GET OUT REEEEEEEEEEEE
Could the Mongols have made it to the Atlantic had the Khan not died?
They had beaten the fuck out of every European force until the time of the khans death and then chose to stop invading
>>369978
Central and Western Europe doesn't bode well for horse archer armies.
If they moved quickly enough yes. As soon as they moved their army West though, the Mongol Empire would have been on borrowed time due to rebellion back in the East.
>>369978
They showed promise and the ability to beat any army they faced. I'm not sure if they had enough men to hold an empire of that size. I suspect they would have been waylaid by the Germanic tribes in the northern forests.
Where did it go so wrong? Or was it just doomed to fail from the start?
1. Rushed creation because bongs just decided to leave suddenly
2. Objectives Resolution

Bad things
>islam
>country controlled by talibans
>Talibans have nukes
>Country is corrupt as hell
>Borders and ethnicities doesn't make sense (lot of different people living in the same country
It went wrong from the start, giving land for the muslims is a retarded idea and gandhi is a brit puppet and probably a muslim as well
Good things
>they can poo somewhat in the loo
Probably when they went to war with half their population
