>take mainland Europe and quit while you're ahead
>do not blitz Britain, make it clear you have no interest in attacking their colonies
>keep strong defences on the Soviet border but do not attack (this was their biggest miscalculation, Germany actually ended up with less food imports than they'd been getting via trade, when a major reason for attacking was to improve Germany's food supply)

Not my mother, but one of her friends lived in Ukraine during Soviet rule. Said it was awful, crime ridden and never enough food to go around. They eventually moved to East Germany and escaped from there, how they did it I have no idea because it's not a topic I bring up.

Hey there /his/, need a little help.
My university is requiring all students to take Philosophy (even though I'm a film production student myself). We're supposed to put together a proposal for an oral discussion for our final. Just to have a little fun, I decided to argue against moral ethics. Here's what I have so far:

Thesis: We are not obligated to seek truth, therefore moral ethics are irrelevant.

Main reasons:

*Whether we follow good or bad ethics, we are still regarded as human beings; following or not following the teachings of truth does not redefine us as human. Think of phrase “we’re only human”

*Ideology is often disguised as truth; such as the strangely immense support for Donald Trump’s anti-Muslim “truth” (and anti-any foreigner ever, for that matter), comparable to resounding support for Hitler’s “truth”. Truth is UNTRUSTWORTHY.

*Also, there are so many different ideologies that define truth, too many opinions of truth, truth itself is lost in who believes what. Truth is SUBJECTIVE

*Truth does not even exist, following the philosophy of Descarte’s claim that “I think, therefore I am”. There is no way to confirm the world around us even exists, and yet we only choose to believe it through faith in our observations and belief in the ideology of said world.

*Following the previous reason and the very first, and elaborating on the second part of thesis, if we cannot confirm that the world even exists outside of ourselves and we do not lose humanity as we interact with the world, our actions have no significance whatsoever.

Texts: Descartes, Discourse on Method

Looking for any help with ironing out reasoning and maybe adding some information from texts from other philosophers as well.

Pic unrelated.

>using a poorly-defined folk saying as an example
>using Trump being similar to Hitler as an example
when you do this, you are practically inviting someone to pick at your examples. Those aren't commonly held facts, they are your opinions and the first things that come to your mind. You may want to find something that is more firmly accepted to base your arguments around

>there are so many differing ideas of what truth is, which shows that truth is subjective
that's just a bad argument.

>truth doesn't even exist, following Descartes
...you should probably choose whether truth is subjective or doesn't exist. These two points seem to contradict each other.
Also, Descartes clearly goes on after 'I think, therefore I am" to assert that absolute truth exists and that any well-adjusted human can discern what is true and what is uncertain. Using him as your main example is a strange choice to me.

What went wrong? Why was/is public housing such a spectacular failure in the United States?

>Why was/is public housing such a spectacular failure in the United States?
Americans.

More seriously, in Europe (both Western and Eastern capitalism), public housing was the triumph of the proletariat in capitalism over the private interests in land. Manufacturing capital was quite willing to discipline rentier land capital over the issue of rent super-profits, in part to shift working class consumption towards the manufacturing industries.

Public housing in Europe was a triumph of the 1930s over the war, experienced in the 1950s. It was a triumph of "the nation" as embodied in the social democratic-esque state, or in Sweden of the co-operative spirit.

In contrast, US public housing was largely charity.

If you give everyone housing but don't give everyone a job, then people have a place to call their own but they have no way of surviving. Combine this with the drug habits of the middle class and antagonism from mostly white police forces, and you quickly have a lot of cynics with a lot of opportunity to make money illegally in a very small space. The illegal job market is just like the legal job market, it has competition. Politicians pass harsh drug laws. If you're a drug dealer then you are always carrying enough evidence on you to be convicted of crime requiring multiple decades of prison time, so killing a rival becomes trivial in terms of relative legal risk. Police forces in the 70s and 80s were not equipped to handle the increasing amounts of crime, so public housing essentially became ungoverned territory within the US. If you have even a small amount of people acting in accordance with what I have described above, then you end up having a lot of lethal antagonism in communities that are large in population but small in area. We are social creatures and we take things personally, we seek revenge and we take sides. Gangs start as ways to protect yourself from others but quickly become corporate structures for organized crime.

Being the United States, political power is held by those with wealth, and those with wealth in this country are overwhelmingly white. Setting aside the possibility of racism, if you are a politician you are wealthy, and if you are wealthy you don't live in public housing. People naturally take care of their community first, so even if a politician were to draft legislation to help the people in public housing, they likely lack the experience or intimate knowledge of the issues to combat them effectively.

Policies such as increasing time served for drug and gun offenses, making guns more difficult to acquire, aggressive police tactics, lowering taxes (this concentrates wealth in the hands of the already wealthy), recklessly spending money on "dem programs", the list goes on, and it was all simply misguided. One of the worst things that happened was the destruction of the public housing. In Chicago, this lead to gangs dispersing through out the city, increasing the extent of their territory and rapidly increasing the number of border conflicts.

Eventually, even if the problems that lead to the creation of all this poverty and violence are alleviated, being a man of the streets or a gangster becomes a cultural institution. This problem is compounded by the massive number of poor people who are incarcerated and who are incapable of raising their children. When kids grow up without parents or a warm and supportive family, they can only identify with the environment around them. The physical isolation of public housing also leads to cultural isolation. Rich people don't want savage gangsters in their neighborhoods, so they segregate.

To answer your question
>What went wrong?
Everything. The consistency and enormity of the mistakes made in terms of policy regarding poor people and public housing is really amazing. There is literally nothing good that came out of public housing in itself. Practically all of the domestic antagonism in the US today can trace its roots back to public housing and how politicians treated poor people in general 50 years ago. It's really astounding.

What was the high watermark for Western Civilization?

Industrial revolution era was the first peak of western civilization.

Then it peaked again in the 1900s, with the second stage of the industrialization.

And then the Roaring Twenties, 1930s, 1940s, were next next peak.

And finally it peaked again, for the last time and at the height of it's power in the 1960s.

Numerous passages in the Bible portray Jesus clearly stating that the Second Coming would occur within the lifetime of his disciples.

>"Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled."

— Matthew 24:34

"This generation" refers to a span of 30-40 years, thus placing the date of the second coming before the deaths of the disciples. C.S. Lewis called this "the most embarrassing verse in the Bible" in The World’s Last Night and Other Essays.

Three more verses explicitly state that some of the people listening to Jesus as he preached would not die before he returned.

>"Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom."

— Matthew 16:28

>"And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power."

— Mark 9:1

>"But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God."

— Luke 9:27

Jesus also told people that "the time is short and they should not get married, not mourn, not be happy, not buy things, and not live "in the world". This again indicates that Jesus himself believed his return to be extremely imminent. (1 Corinthians 7:29-31, 1 Peter 4:7)

The whole idea of a second coming itself is pretty much bunk. The Messiah, as prophecized in the Old Testament will be a human religious leader and a warrior king born of a young woman. He will not die and come back, he will live a mortal life within which he fulfill the prophetic expectations.
>>
no, in the bible 'generation' doesn't refer to the same thing we call a generation i.e. a lifespan
>>
I think Jesus would flip the fuck out if he discovered that 300 years later the Emperor himself becomes a Christian. To early Christians that would be like Hitler enrolling in a Yeshiva and becoming a rabbi.

Christianity focuses SO MUCH on the fact that's it's a religion of the marginal, the poor, the oppressed that it didn't cross their mind at all that a rich and powerful guy in charge of literal armies would join it without giving away any of his wealth and power. That's why Augustine had to retcon the ever loving fuck out of it.

They locked up quite a few German divisions fixing their fiasco in Greece in the critical months before Barbarossa, It was also the catalyst for the German invasion of Yugoslavia which unnecessarily keep for German units out of Russia. The failure to take Moscow and thus Barbarossa is what ultimately ended any hope of the Germans breaking the Soviets and those divisions in Greece and the Balkans would have otherwise been used in support of operations in Russia.

Not to mention their North African shenanigans.

Could you recommend some philosophers who defended authoritarianism/totalitarianism? I am interested because democracy is today taken as "natural" and God-given. I just want to check the other side of the coin. I would really like to know more about it and its philosophical basis. Any period is acceptable, ancient to modern.

A lot of the philosophical and scientific contributions of those cultures were preserved (and even built upon) by both Muslim and Catholic scholars during the middle ages, so I wouldn't go that far - and even if Byzantium somehow survived until present day, its culture would have changed greatly, as all cultures do over time.

Also keep in mind that the Ottomans, Seljuks, and many other Muslim empires were in fact Turkic nomads who half-heartedly embraced Islam as they conquered into the Muslim world. Those same peoples would have likely attempted the same conquests regardless of religion; if anything, Islam was a vehicle through which turks could acculturate themselves toward the west.
