It's clear that prior to the First Punic War Carthage controlled more land and I presume more resources and population(like Carthage itself was larger than Rome at the time). Is Carthage's ultimate defeat just due to Rome's astonishing military capabilities, superior command and sheer determination? Or it's simply that thalassocracy is vastly less competitive and coherent compared to a proper land empire like Roman Republic?

I think Carthage was in a general decline, it had been going for near 1000 years. It had the problems that the Roman Republic had, lots of corruption, dodgy politics, power plays etc, but Rome busting its balls at the same time it couldn't compete.
>>
>>1156344
Rome had a higher population than Carthage and many more pools to draw soldiers from. Italia was really highly populated. So no, they won because they could take blows.

Hannibal was basically Caesar, and would have restored Carthage if not for Rome forcing him to flee.

I can't see how the Jehovah's Witnesses see themselves as an inspired religion when they have doctrinal changes every year. Back in the 1920s they were Zionist, now they're not. I also don't like that they re-write the Bible to serve their own purposes. (They use their own Bibles, right?)

Their own Bible destroys their false religion:

>O Jehovah, hear my prayer; Let my cry for help reach you.
Psalm 102:1

>I said: “O my God, Do not do away with me in the middle of my life, You whose years span all generations. Long ago you laid the foundations of the earth, And the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you will remain; Just like a garment they will all wear out. Just like clothing you will replace them, and they will pass away. But you are the same, and your years will never end.
Psalm 102:24-27
https://www.jw.org/en/publications/bible/nwt/books/psalms/102/

>Long ago God spoke to our forefathers by means of the prophets on many occasions and in many ways. Now at the end of these days he has spoken to us by means of a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the systems of things. He is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact representation of his very being, and he sustains all things by the word of his power. And after he had made a purification for our sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.
Hebrews 1:1-3

>But about the Son, he says: “God is your throne forever and ever, and the scepter of your Kingdom is the scepter of uprightness. You loved righteousness, and you hated lawlessness. That is why God, your God, anointed you with the oil of exultation more than your companions.” And: “At the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the works of your hands. They will perish, but you will remain; and just like a garment, they will all wear out, and you will wrap them up just as a cloak, as a garment, and they will be changed. But you are the same, and your years will never come to an end.”
Hebrews 1:8-12
https://www.jw.org/en/publications/bible/nwt/books/hebrews/1/

Gee, I wonder why in Hebrews 1 they didn't render ''O Lord'' as ''O Jehovah'' like they always do...because this passage is about Jesus Christ!

Hebrews 1:8-12 and Psalm 102:25-27 are about the attributes of "Jehovah": His Eternity, His Immutability and His Creation of the Heavens and the Earth. Only "Jehovah" has those attributes and since they are explicitly applied to Jesus, in the JW's own Bible, it is undeniable that Jesus is "Jehovah", the Eternal God.

Father = "Jehovah"
Son = "Jehovah"
Holy Spirit = "Jehovah"

JW's own "Aid to Bible Understanding" book admits on pages 884-885 that the spelling of "Jehovah" originated with a Catholic monk named Raymundus Martini in the 13th century. On page, 887, they admit that there is absolutely no evidence that any of the New Testament writers ever used YHWH in their writings.

I recently listened to the Hitler - mannerheim conversation and is wonder why isn't this more talked about ? Is there anything we can learn about that conversation? I mean isn't it a pretty big deal tha tthis is the supposedly only clip of Hitler in conversational tone.

Because it has been talked about for many years now - at least 12 judging by the first ten results of a quick google search - and there is little to say. Hitler, to the shock of many, was capable of speaking, yes.
>>
>>1155872
Well listening to it sure changes the picture of Hitler, from the one you get served in school where he is borderline psychopathic, high on drugs and with possible homosexual tendencies.
>>
>>1155893
yea that's kind of what i mean by, if i we can learn something from this audio. Here he seems to think Russia is a legitimate threat with hostile intentions. And sees his invasion of russia as an pre-emptive strike and not just an invasion to exterminate the slavs. Sure he might as well be bulshitting so Mannerheim will help with the attack on russia. But I like to hear different opinions on all of this. I find it very interesting

Colonialism dumped infrastructure, then when the whites up and left or were killed off there wasn't enough expertise to maintain the infrastructure everyone had relied on.

Then the Cold War kicks off and everyone started arming everyone in Africa to either fight/spread communist ideology.

Cold War ends, all the African nations relying on soviet assistance now find themselves with no money and a lot of weapons. Que the spat of small wars and ethnic cleansings we see today.

Now China has moved in under neo-colonialism but they just build enough infrastructure to extract resources. You won't see any Chinese made universities in Africa.

Is mental illness overrepresented in philosophers or other famous great people?

I think every Wikipedia page I come across, for example about Nietzsche or Foucault, has a section about their years of mental illness. (And by mental illness I mean something more than having the occasional light depression, like basically everyone on the planet.)

Genious and madness often go hand in hand.

Lots of great leader had manic depression and would alternate between brooding and going out and do crazy stuff (napoleon, alexander, hitler)

I'm in the camp that Nietzsche wasn't mentally ill at all, except for the occasional spikes of egocentricity.

The hard evidence we do have suggests he was fucked up from all the medicines he needed to function, and his tragic decline resulted from a physical brain disease.
Makes one sad when pondering on it, really.

People in rural areas had to safeguard their reputations because people who didn't were seen as lacking confidence in their own good character. Gossip and rumors played a big impact on peoples' perceptions of each other in a part of the country where important folks (landlords, knights, planters, etc) didn't have big get-togethers often except for a few times a year at holidays. For lesser rural folk it was important because you wanted your neighbors to be trustworthy because you'd ask them to watch your shit for you when you went away and didn't want to worry about them stealing your livestock or other things.

So why wasn't it a problem that Hitler was openly having an extramarital relationship with a younger woman?

Does anyone know what the plank roads looked like during the Three Kingdoms era? I'm trying to wrap my head around the logistics of Shu-Han invading Cao-Wei.

>>1154301
Like planks every few feet to a few meters to make sure soldiers and carts had a foothold

As for Liu Bei invading they would have marched even if jungle was in their way. They where driven by divine fervor.

Even then the roads werent in horrible disrepair, if you can overrun checkpoints and blow through forts on the road. From Jing it only took 5 days to Xuchang. And its a large country even back then.

The only time you saw a road fully planked was... never. The most you saw where steplike planks only half a foot apart.
