Was Socrates being facetious? His description of utopia is not only deranged, but also obviously impossible. No society of humans could possibly sustain a system like this, and that fact is even addressed between Glaucon and Socrates before they stop talking about it and move on.

Why do Catholics deny that their Church was in a terrible state in the Middle Ages, reducing the entire Reformation from a complex reaction against centuries of Church hegemony and interference to a literal "it was just edginess!"?
Only an idiot unversed in history could deny the state of the Church at the time: incredibly corrupt, its reputation damaged by the Western Schism and the issue of Avignon Papacy and interference in explicitly temporal affairs; its clergy well-known for their incompetence as well as moral deficiency and hypocrisy, as well as the aggressive monopolization of doctrine. And there were a number of movements before the Reformation, that clearly showed an undercurrent of anti-Church reaction: the Cathars, the Bogomils, the Waldensians, the Brethren of the Free Spirit, the Hussites and Lollards, the Pickards and the Adamites... It's very clear that there was great discontent with the Catholic Church, at a grassroots and popular level. But Catholics attempt to overlook this and simply place the blame of the Reformation on Luther! Never mind that Luther was criticized for being to "Catholic" and was quite conservative, and that Catholics here never criticize or even talk about the more radical reformers like Calvin or Zwingli - probably because the only thing they know about the Reformation is what they were taught in their idiot Catechism.

Because 'Catholics' is a huge group, you get a variety of reactions and opinions about the Reformation, going from what you describe to 'yeah people had a point and if they want to worship that way they should feel free.' Any single group will have dissent and people who feel that they can split off and do "things," whatever those things are, better their own way. No group is monolithic and no group will not splinter without a strong authority working against such a thing.

That's literally what soap is though. A source of fat mixed with a strong alkaline.
The resulting chemical can kill microorganisms by breaking the phospholipid bilayer, and clean surfaces more effectively by allowing oils to dissolve in water.

There are videos on youtube of people making it with bacon fat and drain cleaner, and it works perfectly well.
The running theory among anthropologists is that somebody was cooking meat over an open flame, some fat rendered out onto the ashes, and somebody noticed that the resulting suds were great for cleaning.
It's still one of the best topical antimicrobials because germs can't build a resistence to having their cell walls physically dissolved into water.
Alcohol does the same thing, but it doesn't do the part where it cleans off oil, and why would any self respecting person waste perfectly good alcohol on cleaning?
