just finished this movie. Why did the brits kill unarmed civilians? is that the only way they could win? fuck the redcoats. why did the USA save them in both world wars. Battle of new Orleans best day of my life.
Bait

>it's just bait, killing civilians is okay
I hate the English so much after seeing this. It was as bad as what they did to Scotland in Braveheart.
Was Socrates being facetious? His description of utopia is not only deranged, but also obviously impossible. No society of humans could possibly sustain a system like this, and that fact is even addressed between Glaucon and Socrates before they stop talking about it and move on.
This is one of the most totalitarian and fascist political texts I can think of.
Yeah it was all just a social experiment bro.

Which is puzzling considering how much inspiration Marx clearly took from The Republic.
It's a thought experiment, dummy. He says that it's impossible to implement it himself.
Tell me about Anarchist Catalonia.
Was it a functioning society?
Is it just a meme?
One of the biggest groups of useful idiots in history
read/listen to Homage to catalonia by George Orwell. He talks about his time there.
I wanna know that too, so have a bump.
Also, was it bureaucratic?
Anyone got any good books on Irish mythology, my local library's got jack shit.

Why do Catholics deny that their Church was in a terrible state in the Middle Ages, reducing the entire Reformation from a complex reaction against centuries of Church hegemony and interference to a literal "it was just edginess!"?
Only an idiot unversed in history could deny the state of the Church at the time: incredibly corrupt, its reputation damaged by the Western Schism and the issue of Avignon Papacy and interference in explicitly temporal affairs; its clergy well-known for their incompetence as well as moral deficiency and hypocrisy, as well as the aggressive monopolization of doctrine. And there were a number of movements before the Reformation, that clearly showed an undercurrent of anti-Church reaction: the Cathars, the Bogomils, the Waldensians, the Brethren of the Free Spirit, the Hussites and Lollards, the Pickards and the Adamites... It's very clear that there was great discontent with the Catholic Church, at a grassroots and popular level. But Catholics attempt to overlook this and simply place the blame of the Reformation on Luther! Never mind that Luther was criticized for being to "Catholic" and was quite conservative, and that Catholics here never criticize or even talk about the more radical reformers like Calvin or Zwingli - probably because the only thing they know about the Reformation is what they were taught in their idiot Catechism.

Because 'Catholics' is a huge group, you get a variety of reactions and opinions about the Reformation, going from what you describe to 'yeah people had a point and if they want to worship that way they should feel free.' Any single group will have dissent and people who feel that they can split off and do "things," whatever those things are, better their own way. No group is monolithic and no group will not splinter without a strong authority working against such a thing.
>>1615864
Most of Luther's 95 Theses no longer apply to the Catholic Church.
>>1615864
Catholic scholarship pretty much see Luther positively

How about:
Say half of the U.S. falls to various other nations, but one half still stands and operates as the U.S.
However, China now claims to be the true successor to the U.S., even going so far as to rename China.
Now replace U.S. with Rome and China with Germany.

Is gaul soap actually useful from a hygienic standpoint?
Gaul soap was animal fat that was mixed with ash from burnt wood. The resulting product was then hardened
>animal fat that was mixed with ash from burnt wood
That's literally what soap is though. A source of fat mixed with a strong alkaline.
The resulting chemical can kill microorganisms by breaking the phospholipid bilayer, and clean surfaces more effectively by allowing oils to dissolve in water.
>>1614791
>That's literally what soap is though.
Oh.
You know, I never thought about how we made modern soap until now
>>1614802
There are videos on youtube of people making it with bacon fat and drain cleaner, and it works perfectly well.
The running theory among anthropologists is that somebody was cooking meat over an open flame, some fat rendered out onto the ashes, and somebody noticed that the resulting suds were great for cleaning.
It's still one of the best topical antimicrobials because germs can't build a resistence to having their cell walls physically dissolved into water.
Alcohol does the same thing, but it doesn't do the part where it cleans off oil, and why would any self respecting person waste perfectly good alcohol on cleaning?
