Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

-repostin my question-
I have a question which oneshould I buy:
X1 (1291-2zg) i5-2520M
or
Twist i5-3317u with ssd
both same price.
Haha, time for dumb questions.
Has anyone ever tried opening their thinkpad battery and manually replacing the cells? Is it so impractical it's not worth the hassle or is there potential benefits?

Who are you quoting
>Is using a DE a thing? or just a WM?
WM is enough most of the time.
>is there anything else besides i3 that looks good?
Yes, but make your own mind on this.
Everything looks like horse shit out of the box anyway.
>how can i REALLY mimic the top panel of the iOS, without the current app menu being there?
Get something like tint2 or even XFCE4 panel and rice it from there.
>Is there such a thing as "looks good even without le animu dark theme terminal looking no-titlebar" setup?
Yes
>>57414141
>who are you quoting
some winfag that really hated ricing for some reason, he had a mental breakdown on a thread not long ago
is this a good place to start with i3?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARKIwOlazKI
besides terminix, what other stuff is also god tier to get that flat clean look?
>>57414055
>Is using a DE a thing? or just a WM?
Usually ricers only go with a WM
>is there anything else besides i3 that looks good?
IMO, no. But I don't really care for tiling WMs.
>how can i REALLY mimic the top panel of the iOS, without the current app menu being there?
Do you mean iOS or MacOS? Big difference.
>Is there such a thing as "looks good even without le animu dark theme terminal looking no-titlebar" setup
I've seen some but never got a link or anything from the anons.

Just use the controls like you would in the window in the terminal instead. e.g. 9 and 0

give it a week. People come and go here based on tech events and news. Ain't shit happening right now that hasn't already happened other than Zen and that's not a mainstream interest.
it's good
there is still some okay programming and technology discussion to be had but the amount of /v/ infestation in all threads is slowly declining. There are still a lot of poorly thought out bait posts but they 404 quickly or contain themselves. I'm ok with it. It's like a small brain with a huge tumor having its tumor quiet down a bit and its actual size becoming somewhat more apparent.

but that's bad
I need to buy a new laptop that will last me for the next six years comfortably. I'm looking for something with great battery life, portability and good performance and my budget is $2000. So far I've been considering the above two laptops but I'm open to suggestions. Please don't suggest a chromebook or a thinkpad, it has to be light and run a real OS. It will also be my main machine as I won't be able to get a deaktop in the foreseeable future.

Can someone recommend me a good tech news blog where the journalists don't constantly try to shoehorn their own political opinions? (I'm looking at you, The Verge, engadget, wired, gizmodo, etc.)
For fucks sake, these are tech sites, the only things they should be talking about are tech, not politics. I can't believe I even have to ask this question.

>South Korean prosecutors have raided the offices of Samsung Electronics as part of a probe into the political scandal around President Park Geun-hye.
>The prosecutors are investigating allegations that Samsung gave money to the daughter of Choi Soon-sil, a close friend of the president.
>Ms Choi is accused of using their friendship to interfere in politics and solicit business donations.
>Samsung confirmed the raids to the BBC saying they had "no further comment".
>President Park has apologised for her ties to Ms Choi but faces mounting calls to resign.
>In this latest twist of the scandal that's been rocking South Korea for weeks, prosecutors are investigating allegations that Samsung might have provided €2.8m euros ($3.1m, £2.5m) to a company co-owned by Ms Choi and her daughter, to bankroll the daughter's equestrian training in Germany.
>Prosecutors are also reported to have raided the offices of the Korea Equestrian Federation and the Korea Horse Affairs Association.
>Ms Choi was arrested on 3 November and charged with fraud and abuse of power.

What hard drive should I get for basic PC & gaming? Should I get 7200 RPM & 64MB Cache? Is 32MB Cache bad? What's the cheapest per gigabyte? Seagate is shit, right? Any deals /g/ anticipates for Black Friday?
>>57435726
>HGST
>Western Digital
>Anything else
>Seagate
In that order
Cache makes little difference, but if you experience placebo effect just get 64. Always get 7200, fuck 5400.
Then whatever space you need.
>tl;dr
Get a 7200rpm 1TB WD HDD for $40
Keep these kinds of threads to /sqt/
/thread
7200rpm is fine for basic stuff, though for gaming an SSD improves load times for most games.
As for cheapest per gb, Seagate is the best option. I've had multiple Seagate drives for years, and I haven't seen a failure yet, even one during the heyday of failures. Though WD is better if you're paranoid about it and willing to spend the extra money.
So for externals do you guys buy enclosures and double it as an external.
Pocket size externals or powered stationary externals HDD's?
What's your guys set on externals?
