Hello, I'm a big, stupid idiot that doesn't know anything about anything.

I recently opened up an IRA Roth account at Vanguard and put $1000 in it, and set it up to take $100 every month from my bank account and put it into my Roth.

Do I need to do anything else? Or can I just throw $100 in there every month until I'm old? Do I need to buy stocks or bonds or something? How would I even do that? I am so incredible dumb!

I don't think so.

Right now there is a pie chart on my page that is 100% Short-term reserves. I'm guessing there should be some stocks and bonds in that pie chart, but I don't know man.

Hi /biz.

Someone who isn't me wants to purchase some land and a house.

They are not employed, but have a large sum of un-taxed cash to use.

What legal hurdles would they face, if any, from purchasing land and a house using only physical cash?

Even when buying straight from the owner, leaving banks and everyone out of it?
>>
If the money is in an untaxed fund like an IRA or solo 401k, there's no problem. Hell, you can even get a mortgage on it if you can find a bank that does non-recourse loans.

This is what I may do soon.

ITT: We talk about underrated college majors/career fields.

I'll start: Construction Management

>Good programs at most state universities. No elitism or preference for Ivy League bluebloods like in finance or Top 4 accounting
>Most firms hire straight out of college with salaries in the 50-60K/yr USD range, with regular raises and bonuses
>leadership experience from Day 1. You're usually in an assistant management / engineering support role making things happen. There's little to no "bitch work"
>Academics in undergrad are easy as fuck compared to most degree programs in business or STEM
>fast-track to senior management positions, calling the shots and making more money than the engineers who work for you
>Rewarding work. At the end of a project you see the tangible results of your effort literally built in steel and concrete to be appreciated by all.

What I am going to say seems meme worthy, but if you play the ups and downs and labor situation and are ready to move and put in real work, it's worth it.

>obtain EMT and work for ambulance company or fire district in reserve or volunteer position
>complete a bachelor's in Paramedicine/EMS or a Fire Engineering degree
>(there are a handful of these programs nationwide)
>Test for West Coast Fire Departments (in Union and labor strong states and locals)
>go to academy, get through probie year and first few ranks.

Never gonna be rich, but 10 years in at age 28 I work 75 days a year (I use my vacation but could work 100 days a year and cash in at end of yeae) and make $84,000 a year with God tier benefits
>0 deductible, 0 out of pocket, no annual limit cadillac health plan
>pension
>matching financial products 457s
>discounted services

Also that $60 an hour overtime if I fart at work, usually make additional $30,000 a year if I'm not travelling.

Currently nation wide there are fucking hundreds of fire jobs available and it's only going to get better. Kids these days are fat, have criminal records and poor work ethic, they literally cannot find qualified candidates.

Makes for a good bachelor lifestyle if you know how to live within your means.
>>
>>1788496

I'm the OP. Very jelly of you anon. I would drop my current job and become a firefighter anyday Undortunatrly it would require going back to school for years where I live.

Firefighters have always made a good living in a lot of states. Most people sadly (luckily?) don't realize this.

Police officers in major cities outside the South and in East Coast cities make bank too. Your average Chicago cop makes over 90K a year and a comfy pension at age 55.

Because people will fuck you over all the time and ebay doesnt do anything about it. I know people who actually lost money selling stuff on ebay because people complain and want their money back and of course you have to pay for shipping and all that and then maybe you get your item back in one piece, if not its your problem. Do not even bother,
>>
>>1789086
The trick is to sell shit that's cheap (e.g posters, stickers) so if someone does complain, which is 1 in every 50 customers, you only lose maximum $10 in stuff.

Jewish tricks? No, and please refrain from the antisemitism! Robinhood graphs are just shit and only show you an average, not-really-realtime price. To get Bid/Ask prices and important things like candlestick graphs, you should use a more robust platform.

> How is it free?
"People" invest your settled funds when you're not using them, just like banks.

Are you aware how small this community is? Better to try stocktwits or r/wallstreetbets

Not being approved in 3 days seems to be the new norm. Nevertheless, call/email their support if you've been waiting more than that.

> Where can I get better charting or bid/ask?
Real brokers, like TDAmeritrade's thinkorswim. Otherwise you should be using stockcharts.com, finviz, or a non-pile-of-shit for your graphing in addition to Robinhood.

Hello anon,

my parents are working class people, who barely got by, my mother is a cleaning lady, my father retired low-end worker.
Problem:
I'm a college student soon to graduate.
Based on my subject, performance and region I'm likely to earn far better than my parents.
(Embedded Systems Engineering, Germany,
graduate income: 50k to 62k €/a. At 3 years of work experience 79k...104k €/a as of 2015, Source: http://www.elektroniknet.de/karriere/trend-nach-oben-embedded-gehaelter-116977.html )
Many people have experienced family members to trust on these matters, but my family as I said never had much contact to finance, they can't help me.

So far the money I received monthly, I simply spent monthly. (Largely government gibs, though repayment capped to 10k€ total, while I already received more than that net.. hence a good deal + 25 Euro per month from my Grandma)

To build a positive habit of saving and gain experience in investing I decided to go on a budget, I noticed I can save a substantial amount(relative to a college students income) by switching to cooking food myself instead of going to the university cafeteria, stopping to drink alcohol, stop going out to bars, and stop ordering food.
As I also want to improve my health this seems to be beneficial on both aspects of my life.
All in all that means savings of 210 Euro per month.
Adding this to my initial "savings" of ~1000 Euro. (How I got to that money is another story..)

Two weeks ago I started investigating on what is the „best“ way to save it, inflation seems to eat a part of it away, regular bank accounts give you roughly zero interest here in the Eurozone, so even „putting it to the bank“ just leads to loss, a big „incentive“ for me to save money is, in order to have a safety cushion if I run into trouble, but an even greater „incentive“ is, that I was given the impression that you can actually grow your wealth by saving. (stock prices going up, dividends, interests etc. etc.)

So zero interest Bank accounts are ruled out for me.
Even long-term savings accounts in Germany give you only 0.3% interest rate, while inflation in 2016 has been 1.68%.

10 year bonds of Germany have 0.31% interest rate, shorter term bonds even tend to go into negative interest rates!
Even the „PIGS“ bond interest rates are at:
Spain 1.66%
Italy 2.18%
And thus close to the Inflation rate we face here.
Greece is at 7.94% (This seems like a highly risky bet.)

US treasury bonds are at 2.4%
How will trump affect this?
Those are denominated in $ not Euro!
I have no clue how the exchange rates will develop, how GDP growth will develop.
USA has a debt to gdp ratio >100% and rising, Eurozone a debt to gdp ratio <90% and falling.
GDP growth in 2016 have been similar, 2017 GDP growth of the Eurozone is set to outpace USA.
How stable is the $-Euro exchange rate?
Trump claims he wants to bring manufacturing bak and lower the US $ to Euro exchange rate!
This would mean I'd lose „bigly“ when I hold US treasury bonds and the US-$ drops.
Etc. pp. And I'm only beginning to understand how these things work, and I know that I'd probably need years of finance school education,
>>
which I won't receive, and I know that the ones active in the field aren't interested in my financial well being „principal-agent“ Problem and „moral hazard“.

Now my problem is, that I feel like most financial advise I read on „internet news“ as well are bullshiting, either people trying to influence things for their own advantage, earning on fees, selling their books, or simply trolling.

Financial advisors at my bank I don't trust at all, my aunt is a banker herself, even she tried to screw me in the past to gain fees, the father of a costudent of me earns his living by financial advice/deception of medical doctors.. so I heard my fair share of stories on that.

I also understand that I'm not competent to predict stock prices or to pick stocks, even if that would be humanly possible in General, others know far more, and dividends aside this is a zero-sum game where the smarter/more qualified actors would gain wealth from those less able.

The trade in derivatives, commodities and currencys is dominated by automated trading done by software operating at fast devices close to the exchanges, and only the fastest of those make money off the others, and regular investors.

So that leaves to me assuming a perfectly unpredictable financial market, where I can at least earn roughly equal to world GDP growth by investing in an index fund that trys to closely match the global economy.
The overall fees are at least 5% of the final value in there at index funds I saw, in addition to a 26.375% tax on any capital market gains in Germany
Also the money I put in faces the currently ~1.7% inflation
As of 2016 the gross world product growth is 3.08%, so ~3% growth.

Assuming I invested my
1000 Euro + monthly 210 Euro at 3.08% interst and 1.7% inflation, and those 2016 values are similar tot he future that would be inflation adjusted 1.38% growth..
after 20 years:
>>
>>1787944

This would give me 54047 Euro inflation adjusted output, at 51400 Euro saved
A mere cumulative real interest of 5.15% per 20 years.
In other words: „Save 244 months, and get 12 months worth of savings for free.“

This seems ridiculously small.

So what am I not seeing?

I was working for a friend in 2016 and he claimed me as self-employed. I only made $4600 but things took a rough turn and now I'm unemployed and living with my Mother trying to find work.

He's never claimed anything he's ever paid anyone before me and he sent me a 1099-MISC tax form for 2016. I know that if you're self employed, you have to report anything over $400 but how much will I have to pay on it?

I am so incredibly fucked if I have to pay 15-20% on this with the current state. I know there's limits on W-2 and other forms that will prevent people from owing money but I have never dealt with a 1099-MISC form before.

Anyone know anything about this? Don't really have the cash to shell out money to H&R Block at the moment and Google isn't providing a lot of help.

You're poor and made under 8,000 in a year, you don't gave to pay shit. Go with an accountant so the help you out.
>>
>>1788027
this is essentially true, except you owe self-employment taxes on all 1099 earned income.

self employment taxes are about 15%, there is no personal deduction.

so OP if that's all you earned you'll likely owe about 15%.
>>
>>1788050
to clarify, if you made less than $6,300 your tax rate is 15%.

if you made more than $6,300 your tax rate is 15% PLUS the regular rate. So typically your tax rate will be about 30% on self-employment income.

you'll notice your boss is probably screwing you by making you pay taxes that he technically owes. If he paid you by the hour you can probably turn him in to the IRS for tax evasion and not owe any taxes.

because if he paid you by the hour there's a good chance you're an employee, not a contractor, and you shouldn't have to pay any taxes.
