Bret was eternally pissed after Shawn's prima donna antics which cost him getting his win and belt back at this very Mania.
Steve was eternally pissed at DubyaCeeDubya for obvious reasons while mad at Vince for not getting his character yet.
The crowd was lit af for them.
Finally, the agents booked one hell of a finish.

Timing was perfect. Bret had been the biggest name for a couple of years and Austin was next in line. A year later Bret would be gone and Austin would win the title off HBK. This match put over Austin huge and still had Bret look strong because he won. Refusing to tap despite the sharpshooter and all the blood made Austin look like a massive badass which fit his character perfectly and it set up the whole attitude era and Austins success in 98/99/00. The heel Bret promos were great too.
