It never made any fucking sense. Taker had already destroyed two entire generations worth of Hall of Famers at Mania, including Trips twice, but the psychology of the match revolved around him getting beaten so badly that HBK is tempted to call for the bell.
Honestly, the whole thing would have made more sense if HHH had just ordered Taker to pointlessly lay down for him just for the ego stroke, the way he did with Rock, and Jericho, and Booker T, and Orton, and Brock, and Sting.
