When thinking of unique sci-fi races, I thought of animals that are currently capable of using tools and imagined them as evolving into anthropomorphic bipeds.

The only problem is, my gut tells me that you can't just inexplicably have bipedal octopus people or raven-men, because even if the setting were millions of years in the future, how would you explain dozens of animal species evolving human-like sapience?

Artificial selection?
Genetic fuckery?

Natural selection is the one I always go to.
They're from planets where animal traits and high intelligence were advantageous, and so they evolved to reflect that.

Artificial selection is interesting too. I'm honestly curious, despite ethical implications, if we could breed something with higher intelligence through artificial selection, maybe starting with animals that already have the capacity to mimic speech, like certain birds.

How would you portray a fallen Empire similar to the Roman Empire in your typical fantasy setting, particularly one set centuries after its fall? How would call the extinct Western and surviving Eastern part? Do you have one or both in your setting, even as part of the backstory of the setting?
8 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
To citizens of Rome while it was "split" it was a single Empire, they just had two Emperors that ruled different parts, the Romans had actually done this before.

To people that were alive centuries after the Western half fell they still considered the Easter part as the same Empire. This was for both citizens inside it as well as its neighbours and enemies.

Best Roman Empire in game is clearly a Romano-British one fighting Germanics however.
>>
>>55073478
Not to mention that one of the eastern Emperors officially and legally reunited it. I want to say Justinian, but I'm unsure. Point is it was only split in half for a few hundred years. This point is conveniently ignored by everyone who hates the eastern half.

Like a fucking magical masterpiece of human ingenuity. In a non-magic or low fantasy setting, this empire's existence seems supernatural. They built things taller and larger than any had before or since. The fountains they once used for decoration and pleasure are the only water source within fifty miles for the current denizens. And if migrating groups, like what happened in Western Europe, were the ones who brought down the Empire... their grandchildren would look at their elders like they were monsters. They fucking burned books filled with the knowledge on what crops to grow in certain areas. They tore down statues of past great-men in order to forge them down into simple boars and helmet ornaments. They tore apart frescos and defaced temples for... whatever reason.

The descendants of destroyers look back and try their hardest to mimic this empire. Kings start calling themselves by a previous emperor's name, [Kaiser and Tsar = Caesar today], they employ any intelligent men left to tutor their children in the classical languages of the dead empire, the queens have their daughters learn to spin classical patterns and clothing for the court, and any institutions left would be flooded with coin in an attempt to revive and copy any remaining literature from the past. If the Empire survived elsewhere as itself or as an evolution, these new kingdoms would send envoys vying for favor and support in their wars.

This is just an important announcement to the brazilian fa/tg/uys that I know are lurking around.

A editora New Order está lançando uma revista digital nova de RPG, pra gente tirar da boca aquele gosto ruim da dragão brasil e dragonslayer, e os três primeiros números serão gratuitos. O primeiro já está disponível no site da editora:
http://newordereditora.com.br/loja/rpg/now-1-new-order-warriors/

Não represento ninguém lá, mas não custa incentivar material novo e sem Cassaro, fora que é de grátis. Dependendo do custo das edições futuras (se existirem) talvez vale a pena dar uns trocados. Avaliem como quiser.

Listen up men, I don't wish to repeat myself.

Welcome to your new home away from home, lads. This beautiful Lunar class Cruiser that you're standing upon, is known as the "Trophy of all Arrogance". It is currently attached to Lord Admiral Helgoth Varswinter battle group, which is currently transporting the bulk of General Montague's crusade forces through Nachmund Gauntlet of the Cicatrix Maledictum. The ship should contain everything you were accustomed to back aboard the Eagle's Fury, and then some.

In addition, burial detail for those who were lost during the destruction of the Eagle's Fury, will begin at 1900 hours in hanger C-11. If you show up, it is to be in full dress uniform. Anything less is unacceptable. In the meantime, I suggest you get your things put away, and get comfortable. It's going to be a long journey.

Do you use silly voices? Silly voices help.

Making characters less fleshed out helps me. I try and piece two things from a traditional "class" and an oddball and run from there.

Then let the game find where your character fits.

Because haughty assholes that come out at night to whisk away the village virgin just so they can savor her blood is a twisted allegory to rampant decadence by the nobility. It's murder, prima nocte and thuggery all rolled into one - fuck, you could even say their ability to control packs of wolves is a colorful metaphor for their household guard adding muscle behind the madness.

Sup /tg/. I'm considering doing a campaign with a Haunted Train at the center of the story. The idea is that the PCs board the train, and it takes them from one location to another. Between locations, while they're on the train, there will also be some kind of overarching "On Board" plot that gets segmented by the "Stop" Adventures. For the Stop Adventures, there will be two kinds: 1) personal adventures dealing with a PC's backstory, experiences, or aspirations or whatever; and 2) adventures that take them to quick, relatively short gothic horror encounters.

So my questions to you are:

1) Help me come up with ideas for the "On Board" overarching plot; and

2) Help me come up with ideas for the non-personal "Stop" adventures. I was thinking at least one of them could be Death House from Curse of Strahd.

Don't worry about PCs escaping the train. I already came up with ways around that. If any of them get too far from the train, they'll simply wake up on board again, as though they fell asleep in their seat.

Influences for this adventure include the Spirit Train segment from Final Fantasy 6, a recent Onion article, and that old Hey Arnold episode. Think along those lines.

>>
Have the overarching story be related to the train itself, explaining it's existence or why they're there - maybe to exorcise the ghosts of the past.

Elements of this plot will be in each of the train carriages, which will all be locked to begin with and unlock as they piece together clues or complete the stops. Maybe each stop is a location relevant to the unfolding of the story as a whole - like moments of the ghost's lives frozen in time.
>>
>>55072325
I was thinking of that first part, unraveling the mystery of the train itself, but I didn't think of the locked carriages and stops being significant part

Thanks, I'll keep it in mind.
>>
>>55072348
Also, what is actually outside the train? Think about it.

A lot of campaigns focus on the PCs as being especially strong or important. When was the last time your party met an adventurer who was a higher level than they were?

How'd that go?
43 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
>>55071881
They thought they were hot shit enough to beat someone far above their weight class. It worked out exactly like you think it would. They all took turns trying to best the level 15 adventurer as level 6s themselves. Instead of working together to possibly have a chance, they figured it was fine to do it one on one because they're the protagonists! "There's no way we can lose to someone else, guys!"
>>
>>55074275
Why did they meet a character of that level at all? What matters of import were he or she taking care of that coincided with meeting the players?
>>
>>55074430
Can't a lvl15 adventurer just be on the way of your PCs? Does he really need to be a special person?

I mean sometimes I feel like it's OK to do what books and movies can't do. Which is make it clear that there are things that are in the world that aren't necessary. Maybe TTRPG should be the type of media that could free from Chekhov's gun.
