Dwarves and Gnomes, Halflings and Goblins, some would argue even Kobolds; these are all races in D&D that are mostly characterized first and foremost by being shorter than humans, with a fair amount of overlap.

What's your preferred shortfolk races to include, and how do you like to handle them? Do you find room for all of them, or do you prefer to dump some for greater diversity in the remainder?

Also, thinly veiled shortstack thread.

Dwarves as a core race, children of the primal fire god, gnomes as their smaller, much smaller, subspecies that live in more temperate areas.

Dwarves live mostly in the colder inhabited nations due to their hardiness, but they can be found nearly anywhere in at least small number.
I don't prefer the "Race = Culture" notion either, but in setting you'll likely find a lot of casually racist NPCs that feel that way about all the other core races.

Goblins as a subspecies to the core race of Orcs, and with the right socio-economic pressure can produce "Goblin Majors" in a community. Goblinoid folk who are the "super-human" version. When enough orcs and goblins are around in a single community you might see a few. They are taller, faster, and much more capable of complex thought. In the only place in the world where this occurs they are used both as military and spiritual leaders in their communities.
While their physical strength still doesn't match their orc bretheren, they are still extremely valuable to the community.

Long story short, do you think it'd be possible to create a D&D setting based on the themes of the "weird western" (western with monsters, magic, steampunk tech, etc)? We got Deadlands as an example of an alternate history Weird Western, but what about starting with a fantasy world base and adding Western elements to that, ala Spellslinger?

Go the opposite way. D&D is built around wild-west style frontier lands already.

This. I didn't go all-in, but I'm using FR out of convenience and picked a spot on the map that's on the edge of civilization. Made it basically Fantasy Deadwood, doesn't require more than a coat of paint unless you feel like it.

So there's this stereotype of roleplaying groups I see a lot of where the DM is invested in the world and builds mysteries and interesting plot hooks for the players, while the players are shallow and careless and just end up blowing through the adventure like a pack of murder-hobos.

Sometimes it'll skew toward the DM being boring and self-absorbed and the players are just putting up with his shit, although often the DM'll be trying to do a good job and the players are just running roughshod over their game. The underlying dynamic is the same, though, where the players don't take the game very seriously and the DM takes it too seriously.

I guess my question is, why? Is this an unfair stereotype? Are people just drawn to the comedy of having the players and the DM on two different wavelengths? In actual games it usually sucks if the group's not on the same page like that, rather than being a source of comedy. Podcasts, comics and the few appearances of gaming in TV or other media seem to show this dynamic all the time though. Is it something you guys have experienced?
20 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
I have certainly experienced it and I would be surprised if a lot of groups haven't.

It's just something that happens. It kind of ties into larger comedic memes so it's the one that resonates.
>>
I think it's because since the DM role is the most demanding it usually goes to the person who wants to play D&D the most - the guy who bought all the books and put the group together. At least, that's how a lot of people first experience it in highschool when a friend tries to recruit his non-gamer buddies to try out his new game. Players can be there to just humor their DM friend but it's hard to completely phone it in as DM.

That's certainly true in a lot of cases. Sadly it isn't in mine. I put up with my close friends whining for years that we never play D&D anymore except

"I don't have time to run because of work"
"I'm not really creative"
"I've never done it, I wouldn't be good"
"You're the only one who has all the rules memorized"

I'm a forever GM, and I don't hate it, but I want to play too, guys

How do you write your campaigns/settings, /tg/?

Do you start with what the PCs would do and write a setting around that? For example, the PCs will be dragon hunters, and so you write a setting revolving around that entirely.
Or do you start with the background and later try to find what the PCs could do? Like you think dragons are cool, so you write a background that revolves around them, and later figure the best way to involve dragons at all would be to have the players be dragon hunters.

I make a very very rough and loose setting, and then start filling in the gaps with things the PCs give me in their backstory. If they don't give me a backstory, oh well, looks like I'm free to do whatever I want.
>>
>>55075429
I start with the core concept and just shotgun ideas until shit sticks.
>>
In the past I spent a lot of time making up entire worlds before hand, and trying to show the players and get them interested in the history and lore so they could make appropriate characters that fit in.

But now I do the opposite, I ask the players what kind of characters they want to create, and when someone chooses some such race or class I let them make up that part of the world.

So....did this game have the potential to be on par with 40k?Its kinda heartbreaking that this game is dead, Noone seems to be making miniatures for it anymore.

>>55075380
Nothing has potential to be on par with 40K because GW grows its fans in vats and releases them into the world to purchase its products.

In reality near monopoly of stores, messy lore that people pick and choose what they like from, sunk cost fallacy, and Stockholm syndrome ensure that GW will survive the treck into space. Also, a toxic fanbase that needs to validate itself by wrecking your stuff.

As for why I dunno. I think it's kinda too bland Factions. Its pre painted Minis idea was brilliant but sold at too large a scale for easy cash appeal I think.
>>
I played a demo game at Gencon way way back and it seems super simple, like entire squads made one shot and extra guys were just HP for the commander.

Minis are cool though.
>>
>>55075380
It had one good looking faction. Thats about the extent of its potential.

Let's discuss Half Minotaur half Goliath's

back in 3.5 you could do the crazy thing of having said creature as a character and thus be huge from the start

Would you let your players play such a race ?

Would you use them as a boss monster ?

Would such a creature makes sense in your setting ?
best way I would describe it is a mad wizard tried to make the perfect war beast.

I played as a regular, large sized, Minotaur in pathfinder. But that game was a nuclear arms race between the casters and the martials to see if we could achieve parity. It was probably the most fun I had in a system I actually hated.

>Would you let your players play such a race ?
Yeah man, it's no biggie in the large scheme of things, even in 3.5 or Pathfinder.
Maybe make it cost a Feat if there's no full casters involved.
>Would you use them as a boss monster ?
I've used regular Minotaurs, I don't like stacking templates. Just mess with the numbers, no need for template stacking.
>Would such a creature makes sense in your setting ?
Yeah, why not, it's already a sink.

Hello Elegan/tg/entlemen

I want to create a fertile environment for intrigues, and I need some how-to.

My aim is to have something that will resemble a good spy story setting, a fertile ground for political intrigue, or even a good crime gang environment. I'm thinking about something like the Godfather, Sin City, the Snatch, Gangs of New York, even A Game of Thrones or Atomic Blonde.

I know that the foundation is basically having a lot of NPCs and factions with motivations and relations, but is there a "standard", "proper" way to do it?
Any game system that does this good, that I can study? Any random tables?

Thank you in advance.

>but is there a "standard", "proper" way to do it?
Yes, it is to not do it and play something else.

Intrigue games center around players being able to pick and choose factions, on the basis of incomplete and often innacurate information about said factions capabilities, goals, methods, etc. In any game that doesn't give enormous amounts of worldbuilding responsibility to the player group, there is going to be a colossal imbalance between the information the GM has available and the information the players have available, such that making informed decisions, especially early when they are at their most free to choose, is difficult to impossible.

Furthermore, because of the lack of information balance, players often have a trust gap with the GM. There's no way of knowing whether the hidden twist about the group they're working for is in fact "honest", and built by the logic of the setting, as opposed to just being pulled out of the GM's ass to facilitate drama.

And that's assuming you have a perfect play group, which you probably don't. I've found enormous difficulty in assembling a group of 4-6 where everyone understands things like subtlety and discretion. Most people who pine for "intrigue games" don't really want to play them, they want to be Machiavellian masterminds in a cast of retards, endlessly backstabbing people without consequence. Intrigue games theoretically can be done well, but they almost never are, and the odds are way, way against you.
>>
>>55073890

This is mostly a worldbuilding question, maybe I should have said it earlier. Anyway

> incomplete and often innacurate information about said factions capabilities, goals, methods, etc.

Pardon me but I can't really see the issue here. Why should my group of player have a crystal clear idea of everything going on in a city, realm or whatever place, like they are behind the scenes? It's not like they have to choose the winning faction from the start.
It's more like they have to - IF they want - work to make the faction they choose the winner.
Of course it's not going to be a misinformed choice, they will have at least some surface element to judge each faction and choose, but I guess that some mystery and some shadiness just adds to it.
Just to be clear, I'm not here to play lolgotcha! with my players and to backstab them, I just want to have a rich setting able to sustain an intrigue campaign.

> players often have a trust gap with the GM
Isn't that always a thing if there's a GM Screen, or even if we are playing an investigative adventure? There's always going to be an information inbalance because the GM knows who the assassin is, and the players do not. I think it's a basic premise of many things here, you have to accept it. Or maybe you have some examples where this does not apply?

>endlessly backstabbing people without consequence
Luckily I am really strict about who sits at my table and who doesn't. My players are long time friends and guests at my table, and they learned (sometimes the hard way) that nothing goes without consequence, good and bad. Murderhoboing is something I am proud to say never happened at my table, at least so far.
