for a long time i had this feeling D&D 5e (and older editions) were missing something. I think i identified the problem after some thought. I think battles with monsters are very repetitive and boring as hell on the grand scheme of things. Players are always going to feel the PC's are boring because they always end up doing the same actions every time. Wizard is going back and magic missile, barbarian rages and hits target with great axe until it dies etc. I also dont want to fall back on the overly long and complicated mess that was 4e combat phase. I played recently Gloomhaven and it does a fantastic job of offering 2 hours of quality dungeon crawling (but only that). I think the game will be better, that the feel for the characters will be better if the combat can be more interesting. Any ideas how to do this ? maybe an extensive use of terrain ? Monsters that never act alone but always with minions and have tactic ? How do you capture the feel from the Witcher where you need to prepare for a combat with more then healing potions ? How do you modify monsters to be a challange without just giving them more HP ?

Put in interesting situations and monsters.
>>53036423
Literally this is all it takes. Its really not a hard thing to homebrew in it that's the itch that needs scratching.
>>53036488
Make ingredients and give them to your PCs.
What's the barbarian good at? Hitting things and getting hit, of course, but he also has excellent skill in grappling, pushing, and tripping foes. All of these are easy to build encounters around.
>Grappling: you have to take them alive/enemy is extremely fast/there's a convenient hazard to hold them in
>Shoving: there's pits or some shit
>Tripping: the monster's weak point is on its belly, flip it over so you can hurt it
What gender bending magic (or science) exists in /tg/ settings?
Girdle of Masculinity/Femininity of course, but which editions have it and which sourcebooks?
I know the original Tomb of Horrors and the 4e version had a gender bending trap. Did any other adventures?
Pathfinder has several, a potion in one magic item book and a notorious trap in an AP.
/tg/ related fiction also welcome. One of the Greenwood books at least had Elminster as a woman.

Obviously that pic is from Baldur's Gate, but there's also Edwin.

>>53035881
Edwin? I didn't play BG and that pic is the only vidya example I know.
So is pic related any good? This is probably a matter of whether or not you like 3.5e, but as a derivative of it, is it worth the time?
>>53035208
Nothing good can come of this thread. If you have any decency you'll delete it and realize your stupidity.
>>53035208
If you like Warcraft, and 3.pf doesn't offend your sensibilities, its perfectly workable.
The hardest thing to work with is the tinkerer class, as its far more DM Fiat: The Class than anything else.
>>53035208
Yeah, it's pretty good. If your group knows 3.5e and has an interest in Warcraft, it's definitely worth playing. You should keep in mind that this game was put out during Vanilla WoW, and a good chunk of it was written while the game was in testing, so a lot of the lore in this game won't entirely match the lore of the MMO, and there's going to be a lot "missing." Also, if you're looking for something that plays like the MMO, this game doesn't. It plays like third edition D&D.
But it's perfectly fine to play. The game works fine and you can have a good time with it.
Alpha testing my Armageddon risk. First time its been played, so feel free to suggest any edits to rules or map.

What can I use to run pic related?
If you're not being retarded, Mutants and Masterminds.
If you are, GURPS.
In my eyes there are two main approaches, based on your preferred themes in the game. This is assuming you're okay with reinterpreting the game and focusing on the setting, rather than trying to emulate gameplay details.
If you want high flying space badasses kicking ass and taking names, go for an action combat system like Legends of the Wulin or Anima: Beyond Fantasy. You're ninja in the style of ninja action movies.
If, on the other hand, you want to focus on more traditional ninja, planning a heist, using your abilities to infiltrate, complete the objective and leave without a trace, something more along the lines of Shadowrun could be appropriate.
Either way, it's a lot of work to adapt it, and god help you if you want to create a satisfying blend of the two. No fucking idea how you make that one work.
>>53033949
Thanks
>>53033964
No worries. I'm just trying to run a game about magical flipping space ninjas with superpowers.
Voice your complaints, share stories, give advice and let's have a thread for everything paladin.
I'll start: Where is the line between Lawful Good and Lawful Stupid?
>>53033563
Killing innocents for harbouring evil.
People stray from the path, it is your duty to lead them back on it.
>>53033791
I agree but there's also a point when a paladin has to decide that someone is too far gone to be saved. Its not fun for anybody if you keep trying to "redeem" every gnoll, orc or ogre.
>>53033563
I'd say that if you go beyond your means and methods to kill evil.
ie Let me massacre a village because i know that someone here summoned that demon and i cant find them (this seriously happened during a game, i spent the entire time tied up for "obstructing justice".
What everyone I play with seems to think is fun:
>"XD My special snowflake wizard build is so OP, look at how high a number I can roll every turn! God, I love playing Final Fantasy Tactics: The Boardgame! Lolol And my dumb Barbarian meathead character gets away with all sort of comedy antics because lulz!"
What I actually want to play for once:
"After recovering all of that treasure from the Felldrake's lair, it looks like we may have enough revenue to initiate our faction's military campaign against the Blackhands. We must send word that we request audience with the noble council, so that we may know who will stand beside us in the coming days, With their aid, we may Exile the evils that darken these lands, and we can reclaim farmland that was taken from our forefathers."
What do?
>>53033539
On the absolutely minuscule chance this isn't just stupid buzzword filled bait-
Find another group. Online, offline, doesn't matter. If what you want and what they want completely fail to line up, you're all better off going separate ways.
Different groups and different people have different playstyles. Claims that one style another is superior is just assholes wanking their opinions. What's important is doing your best to find a group whose style at least roughly lines up with yours, or finding a compromise between the preferences of the group that leaves everyone involved still able to enjoy the experience.
>>53033574
I guess what I'm really asking is, how do I find a group that:
a.) Actually wants to role play instead of just sticking to their meme build for three sessions before getting bored and switching to a different character
b.)Is okay with mixing and matching systems where compatible to simulate a wide variety of scenarios. From small scale brawls to full overland battles
c.) Is willing to go full Autist with me on lore in a homebrew setting, to the point where we can sit and act out a council meeting to make our decisions?
>>53033649
Hard fucking work.
There are a lot of roleplaying groups and mediums online. A lot of games are private, some are public.
Of those games which recruit publicly? 90% are awful. They're new GMs who haven't yet been burned, or shitty people who can't keep regular players, with the occasional decent GM just looking for new players among them.
Even if, looking through gamefinders and roll20 and the sup/tg/ listing, you find a game that seems perfect, don't get your hopes up. It's probably going to suck.
But the point isn't the game- The point is networking. If the game advertised for certain things, there's a decent chance other people involved who might not be complete shitheads might like the same things you do.
Keep doing this, and keep in contact with decent players you find. Share games with them, get to know them, make friends, slowly grow your circle, shedding the shitters and finding good and reliable players and GMs until you have a reliable, stable group which fits your tastes.
It's possible. I know it is because I managed it. But it took me fucking years until I'd properly cleansed my social circle of the dross I'd accumulated in the attempt. Now? I have achieved gaming nirvana, and it is so fucking good. I had a GM run a solo side session for me the other day which was so tense it had me on the end of my seat and where the ending left me literally crying. All that work was so goddamn worth it.

Is it possible for a Skitarri to "go rogue" and function on his own?
Just finished reading this today. While it was nice to see how the Skitarri function withing Ad Mech society, one thing that got to me was the constant removal of the MC free will.
The codexes and surrounding lore point out that Skitarii have free will and independent thought, yet in this novel the priests can suppress it whenever they want via implants/neural networks/hormone manipulation in the Skitarri body.
Read the follow-up, Tech-Priest. It's soooo much better and will answer your question.
>>53033031
Will do. I really enjoy the Skitarii from a lore perspective, even more so after reading this. I especially liked how they showed off the difference between tech-priests who want to seek knowledge and understanding in the galaxy, and those who just want more power and influence on thier Forge World.

How do you explain a space, alien or human, kingdom ruled by an absolute monarch?
>>53032469
It was hereditary.
Our knowledge of the progression of societies is an incredibly tiny snapshot. A few tens of thousands of years of one species on one world.
There is no rational basis for assuming absolute monarchies could not survive into, or emerge into an advanced, space faring civilisation.
Should you put some thought into justifying it? Sure. But the idea that they'd be ruled by a Monarchy is no more ridiculous than assuming democracy, oligarchy or any other ruling system you can care to imagine. Who knows what strange new kinds of governance could possibly exist, over much longer time frames and significantly larger numbers of worlds?
>>53032469
It's the most probable type of governance to exist. It's basically rule of the strongest.
Reminder that this was the last time Warhammer Fantasy lore was any good.
>>53032041
Reminder that 7th and 8th pretty much changed nothing until ET.
>>53032087
I think pretty much anyone who remotely cares about WHF lore pretends that ET and AoS never existed.
>>53032155
I care about whf lore. It was great stuff. Good reads, and a lot of fun.
I also recognize that ET gave it all an end, and AoS is its sequel. I now recognize AoS lore, and enjoy it.
Also, fuck you.
