I'm severely depressed, like to think of myself as mostly recovered from PTSD, but have severe anxiety. Only reason I'm alive is because of a reason I can't even say because everyone will start harassing me for it, but I will just say I have a responsibility to help others.

I don't have a single friend and never will, because I relate to no one and am so used to everyone hurting me I feel uncomfortable when people are nice to me. I have no hope for life and know it will be filled with suffering for me til the day I die.

But since I have this responsibility, what does science say about the best way to cure anxiety and depression, and gaining energy and focus as well? One of the last depression/anxiety meds I was on made me gain weight. Would like one that does the opposite if anything.

Exercise helps, try getting into a gym routine or taking up a sport. Eating healthily can never hurt so it might be worth a shot changing diet habits.

Didn't work. Got a gym membership and was doing that every day while eating healthy. I can't escape reality or what seems to the permanent altered physiology of my brain, which healthy eating or exercise. Great suggestions but they just weren't enough for me. Could keep trying but I need something stronger. I think my brain might be permanently damaged from the PTSD.
>>

You could experiment with taking psychdelics. Smoking weed 24/7 lessens the fucks you give overall but frys your brain to some extend. Or you could start abusing benzodiazepines. Otherwise standard therapy methods would be to talk with your therapist about the stuff that makes you anxious. Another alternative would be to shock yourself through your anxiety piece by piece. Whatever makes you anxious try to let it make you anxious and if you withstand that reward yourself and go back wherever you feel safe and go into baseline feelings. There is still a lot you can try.

Oh god what the fuck is going on in that script

>major

I'm a grad student. I've been required to use Fortran in a computational physics course. In order of computational power required I use bash -> python -> Fortran.

Knowing basic bash scripting is essential if you want to be effective working on a computer. After that, python. I would recommend C over Fortran.

Languages mandated by courses were python and java for first year courses.
For upper courses C was mandatory for compiler design, VHDL for hardware design (although I'm considering moving it towards chisel when I take over the course) and lastly the obscure dataflow language Oz for a programming languages course. Oz is an amazing language for education, but the syntax is asinine.

Personally I write pretty much all my software in functional scala, I'd really recommend those new to CS to learn how to use emacs (spacemacs) on GNU/linux, as well as some WM tool like i3 for running multiple monitors. Scala is highly recommended, but I had to learn it all by myself and it was difficult so don't expect to do all your coding in it. With scala I can create a backend and a frontend in the same language, and I can even write hardware through chisel. It's like node.js but instead of being pants on head retarded and utter shit it's turbo-autistic and doesn't break all the time.

Also learn git, I personally prefer magit (emacs) and learn emacs org for note-keeping and keeping track of stuff.

pic related, read this book and realize you're not hot shit after all

So I have something called MALADAPTIVE DAYDREAMING DISORDER [ = ((ADD - OCD)/2)^1000000] which effectively means I CAN'T FUCKING THINK. Whenever I'm doing something ungrounded in the surrounding objects (like thinking as opposed to reading) I can't fucking help but drift away.

Math and physics are my passion, so finally I decided to just skip exercises - which take me fucking forever - and just read the material. Now I'm obviously not planning on being like this forever and am already noticing the effects of meditation, but how much am I missing here? I'm gonna read the solutions to problems as well - at least to pass the fucking tests.

Anybody with the same problem? How are you coping with this shit? I'm not gonna just give up and be miserable doing some bullshit for the rest of my life, I'll tell you that much.

and I thought procrastination is bad...
>>
>>8741325
I don't understand, do you gain comprehension from just reading the material? How simple is the mathematics in question? If you can't process the problems you can't pass (most) exams. So many questions.

Also, if it's your passion, you could at least have the decency to not put something into the millionth power. Nothing in reality is in the millionth power. Do you know what an order of magnitude is?

>average room has 600 cubic feet of air in it at 70F/295 Kelvin, room temperature
>compress that to 60 cubic feet, it's now 2950 Kelvin
>use a radiator to equalize the temperature with 60 cubic feet of liquid ammonia at 295K
>store the liquid ammonia in a vacuum flask at roughly 1.12 * ((2950-295)/2) = 1486K
>your 60 cubic feet of air is now (2950/2) = 1475K
>decompress the air to 600 cubic feet, it's now 147.5K
>you have a vacuum sealed tank of heated ammonia to cool at your leisure somewhere outside
>release the air
>room is now -100F

Am I missing some reason this wouldn't work?

2950 kelvin is pretty hot, second turning a room into a trash compactor for cooling is nuts
>>
>>8741246
The idea is to make a "portable" cooling unit that wouldn't need a duct to the outside. This thing would likely weigh 1000 pounds, but it would achieve that.

Provided this tub pictured has the same dimensions as a hypothetical normal tub, would a horizontal one use more water, less water, or the same amount of water?

Vertical tub (tub A) is being filled to shoulder height and horizontal tub (tub B) is being filled close to the rim with account for the person stepping in and water not overflowing.

they *could* use the same amount of water

>>
>>8740335
Standing up would use less water, but you're missing the point.
The reason people like baths is because they like to lay down and relax for an hour.
>>
>having to get in and close the door before you can start filling
>having to stand the whole time
>having to wait for all the water to drain before you can open the door and get out
way to ruin the beginning, middle, and end of a bath in one fell swoop

There are tree categories: X, Y and Z
X is a subgroup of Y and Z.
Since Y is also a subgroup of Z it has to sit in the back of the bus with X where it belongs.

Category theory isn't meant to be studied by the uninitiated mathematician. It is almost wholly without interest to one who has little to no familiarity with the topics it sets out to describe and generalize.

I need to turn into an A+ highschool math student by september. I'm 21yo law student, and I'm taking a public tender that requires highschool level math knowledge. The thing is that I left school 4 years ago, and I don't remember shit.

It has some artistic merit. Sadly, some architects start to think too highly of themselves and forget that, first and foremost, a building's main purpose is functionality.

Over here in the Netherlands, the national museum of natural history (Naturalis) is in a shitty position due to the architect crying about "muh art is getting ruined". Why? Because one of their older buildings, designed by him, is getting a minor change: one of the floors is getting changed so there is no longer a big hole looking down to the ground levels (can't think of what it's called, but you get the idea). The building is now getting repurposed as an archive, which is why they want to get more space in the building by actually making the floor a proper floor.

Now the architect is throwing a bitchfit because his "art" is getting ruined. The judge ruled that the architect is in the right (as according to law).
To add insult to injury, the building has to be the most generic shit I have ever seen. Pic related.

Architecture may be considered art, but it's function first and art second.
>>
>>8739801

it's a long process to get fully RIBA qualified in the UK at least. I think it involves a bit of all of those plus some law related stuff. It's more art than anything else though.
>>
>>8739852
Good architecture is both functional and beautiful. Architecture that emphasizes solely the former is mediocre and demeaning to the human spirit, and structures that focus on the latter are frivolous and wasteful.

Daily reminder that the idea that intelligence is an inherent, unchangeable trait goes against the fact of neuroplasticity.
20 posts and 2 images submitted.

Well, neuroplasticity is mostly occuring in the hippocampus and in relationship to forming memories, as far as I can tell, and it does decline with age, but if you're even just average you can definitely learn and understand a lot if you put in the effort (which you should)
>>
Intelligence is 85% inherited, the other 15% can be altered due to neuroplasticity.

you should try to sit down with some doctors and see what they are like.

dentistry is hard work
surgery is rewarding

i would say work in whatever pays the most, so specialize towards that.

If I had to choose I would be an emt. First responder is the most interesting but least financially rewarding job you can do. Society isn't structured to properly reward our police fire and rescue, so don't put your family through that shit and stick to something safe and boring like podiatrist, GP, pharmacist, depending on your IQ and ability obviously.

Why isn't SpaceX trying to create a floating sky colony on Venus? It makes much more sense than colonizing Mars.

>The gravity of Venus is more similar to Earth's, meaning less bone loss

>The distance to Venus is much shorter than the distance to Mars.

>Colonists on Mars would have to live in a super complicated housing system, but on Venus, colonists would literally just live in a giant balloon filled with oxygen.

>Venus actually has an atmosphere, meaning less radiation

>Mars is colder than Antarctica, while the upper atmosphere of Venus is around 70 degrees Fahrenheit

>There is abundant Carbon dioxide and Nitrogen, allowing colonists to easily farm vegetables

>There would be a lot of energy from the Sun, meaning the colony could survive on solar energy 24/7

>falling for the cloud cities on venus meme

No access to minerals means no ability to supply nutrients to any plants nor produce any metallic or refractory products.

A Venus """colony""" would amount to nothing more than a complete dead-end, with no chance of it ever gaining any sort of self-motivated industry nor independence from Earth.

Also, the atmosphere at 50km above Venus (which is where the ambient temperature is equal to Earth sea level) is at around 70 degrees CELSIUS, not fahrenheit. Venus habitats would need active refrigeration to prevent people from being scalded by the ambient temperature, and refrigeration is much more energy intensive than heat.
