I read Mind and Cosmos by Thomas Nagel. He points out that the complexity of life cannot be explained by natural selection. I've long been troubled by the idea that the most complex biological machine can be the result of a completely random chaotic process where random genes in a DNA strand millions of sequences long can spontaneously change and create the perfect mutation needed for that species to adapt.

When will we find a cheap material that has the properties of glass, minus the dangerous tendency to fragment into painful shards?

Yeah but why is it that, in the average lab -even at the most prestigious institutions- glass is still the predominant material for containers?
>>
>>8743156
Heat and chemical resistance, although for some substances plastic containers are used.

So infinity or the proposed infinite positional states of both man and tortoise solve this paradox.

Except we all know infinity is a placeholder or theoretical concept, it doesn't exist in the real world. So how the fuck does the man overtake the tortoise?

Think about it in real terms you fuckhead, if the dude is always only making up half the distance then he is decelerating. The thought experiment doesnt take into account speed or other true factors, that is what engineers do, and that is why they are smarter
>>
planks length
>>
>>8742889
Supertask, it's trivial.

Each step takes less time than the last, if it takes one second to accomplish step one, and half a second to accomplish step two, 1/4 for step 3, etc, after 2 seconds an infinite amount of steps are complete and the man runs past the tortoise.

If every step took the same amount of time then the task would take infinitely long to complete.
Since they don't, it doesn't.

Also if you frame this in a different way it stops being a problem. "A man runs at 10 meters per second, ten meters in front of him there is a tortoise walking at 10cm per second, how long until the man passes the tortoise?" If you stop forcing yourself to think of it as a series of infinite steps, and instead as a continuous function, you can just solve the function and get the answer.

Hello /sci/

I need to sort a string based on parenthesis.
the given input: "x()y()z(a)" needs to be sorted to "(((xyza)))"

Here is the code I have, but I am getting back "((()))" i understand why this is happening, as making a substring at 1 each time cuts off the character that isn't "(" or an ")"

How am I supposed to keep the other characters, in order, without losing them? I can't use a holding string, since this is a recursive function.

Thanks, lets see if there's anybody relatively smart on here.

>>
Check how many left/right parentheses there are, then strip them and add them to the remainder text.
>>
>>8742548
I don't think that would work recursively.
>>
cuz it doesn't need to be recursive

Why isn't there a vaccaine for acne? Surely this would be a billion dollar industry
39 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>8742044
Because most forms of acne are mostly caused by genetics and by hormones as a side effect of puberty. It's caused by your body, not by a virus or specific bacteria strain.

Unless you want to fuck with your genetics or interfere with your natural puberty process, then you can only treat the symptoms not the cause.

Many people spend their whole life trying to perfect their diet and exercise regime.

>count micro- and macro-nutrients
>time meals
>obsess over % intake of calories coming from fat vs carbs
>avoid carbs in general
>take supplements
>etc.

Now compare all that shit with a simple healthy diet and playing sports once a week.

Does that obsession pay off in terms of lifespan and general health? Unlikely.

Here's an example of this behavior.

Nuts have good fats (unsaturated fats).

Different types of nuts have different composition of these fats (mono and poly). "Some people" will literally count how many nuts they're eating so they can control the intake of these fats.

These people really think it's improving their wellbeing,
>>
What do you consider a payoff? Having a slim waist? I don't get what you're using to measure return here.
>>
>>8742005

The goal is (I assume, for most) a long healthy life. The point of diminishing returns is quickly reached -- following a simple, healthy diet (fruit, veg, meat, avoid junk food and sugars) will get you to that goal, everything else has marginal returns.

What I'm trying to measure is how much of a waste of time these efforts into tweaking every aspect of diet and exercise is.

Hey there /sci/,
Not sure if any of you remember me, but I'm the go-to textbook guy...I've supplied the great members of this here board with countless texts.
I'd like to offer me services once again. If you have a textbook/publication you'd like to have, post it here - and I will get it for you.

Idk if you can help me but a while back /sci/ recommended a math textbook which was authored by Russians. The authors were called based for pointing out that algebra actually didn't originate from the Arabs.

So /sci/ what do you think about the 4th dimension?

Do you think it's real? Is it already proved in any way?
23 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>8739707
I think we'd need one or two more eyes.
Or maybe the mind's eye to see cause and effect, effect and cause.
>>
Do you mean a 4th spacial dimension or 3 dimensions and a special time dimension?
>>
So /sci/ what do you think about Euclidean coordinates? Are they real? Are they already proved in any way?

I'll answer your question. Technically, the fourth dimension is not real. Neither is the third or second or first "dimension". They're just ways of describing what we see and categorizing ideas. If you categorize and describe your ideas and observations in certain ways, results obtained from extensions of your thinking can produce tangible predictions that make it seem like the way you categorized your ideas is the way that reality actually behaves.
