Because there's nothing to make fun of in it. People quoting it now assume that opiate means something whole mind numbing and generally bad, which ignores any further nuances of the metaphor.

Are all of the neckbeard neets on 4chan that live on the margins of capitalist society proof of Marx's claim that the lumpenproletariat are counterrevolutionary?

I guess Oblivion was a bold attempt but ultimately failed because it wasn't polished enough. Most of its characters were quite ugly and unlikable, and a lot of it felt empty.

Could anyone help me recall a short story I read some years ago? From what I remember its fairly well known. I'll try to recount the generality of the plot
>Open with scene of family in kitchen, discussing their upcoming picnic.
>Father is reading a newspaper and talking about how awful the world is, son and daughter are eating breakfast, mother is in the kitchen, grandma is just kind of there.
>Next they're driving. They eventually break down or are stopped by some men
>The men hold everyone hostage at gunpoint. This is where the bulk of the story is
>The men are gangsters or something. There's conversation between them and the family. The family is trying to bargain for their lives
>The leader of the men kills off the family members one by one
>The story ends.
I recall there being some mention of Florida and oranges quite often, maybe something to do with somewhere the grandmother went when she was younger? But that's all I've got.
Thanks in advance.

OK, I finished this book and I wanted to get other opinions on it. I enjoyed it overall but I don't understand all of the love that it gets from critics. I get that DFW was trying to fracture the narrative, to better represent what life is actually like for humans, and I think that he did that beautifully. My problem is that I think it could have been done with much less pages. Something as a reader and a writer that I am always thinking about is whether or not the text earns its length and I think that Infinite Jest fails in this regard.
I saw an interview with DFW and he said that one of his biggest fears was not making himself clearly understood and so he would keep repeating his point over and over. I think this is very apparent in Infinite Jest and, once you grasped what DFW was trying to accomplish the entire text seemed very meandering and pointless. I appreciate what he did and, in the context of accomplishing what he set out to do, DFW was successful but I still don't get all of the praise that the book receives.
I found the dialogue to be particularly bad and unrealistic and that the prose itself wasn't much better. I kind of took the entire book as a sort of gimmick that wasn't very enjoyable once you figured out that I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT I'M A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT

I got the distinct impression that he hates the reader. He gets a pass since he also infuriates grammar nazis.

I do have to agree with you on the dialogue. Ain't no 14 year olds have deep conversations about Kant and higher level mathematics. These are the kinds of conversations a smart person must have in his own head. He does do a good job of superficially grasping what people sound like, evidently implying that he has left the house at least once, possibly to buy drugs or attend AA.

He was making fun of the smart child trope in American entertainment. Like most of Infinite Jest, this element was stolen from DeLillo, in this case Ratner's Star. I hope you didn't waste 1000 pages of your life thinking Hal was a self insert. Hal, and the Hamlet reference, in my opinion, was more of a commentary on the fact that America behaves like a child with a lost father who desperately wants/needs one.

I recently realized that the books I was trying to read are too difficult for me to read as I'm not entirely used to reading a lot. However, along the way to that assumption I finished a decent number of books and realized that the few Vonnegut books were enjoyable. Then I decided to try to get myself used to reading books using books that are enjoyable, easy to read, etc.

Any suggestions in vein of Vonnegut or something that enjoyable or easy to read and pushes my comfort levels a bit?

You need to stop memeing the spookman.

Stirner hates kings and stronger men and comes up with a petty leftist, yet egoistical system ; he is everything morbid about philosophy. His goal was to contain the whole world within his hegelian view of man and history, where he reinterprets God and freedom as teleological processes striving to accomplish themselves within themselves ; and thus, in a synthetic way, he derives this teleological quality from such concepts, onto the "ego", as to reformulate this Einzige which he invented (this is a typical lack of intellectual probity, I mean, the use of grammar as a philosophical tool : to say that "I" is a causa sui, a thing-in-itself) within this hegelian framework of his. He is literally the most degenerate of the degenerate systematic Germans that Nietzsche despised, being pure concentrated, no chemicals added, no sweetener, will to nothingness.

>b-but muh spoops !
Stirner is a leftist. In the word "spook" one should read "tyranny" and "oppression". His criticism of all forms of 'tyranny' reaches so far that he concludes that only the Ego remains as something that is not a form of domination against the individual. He wishes to free mankind (as individuals), and in this way, the consequence of his thought would most likely be that of an "irrational" Kingdom of Ends.

Stop memeing the spookman. He is a nihilist and a leftist. Which is redundant.

>Stirner hates kings and stronger men
where? his main target are weak men who make despotism possible in the first place.
> "I" is a causa sui, a thing-in-itself
the whole second half is devoted to flesh it out from various perspectives. he wouldnt need to do that if he had a system.
>He is literally the most degenerate of the degenerate systematic Germans that Nietzsche despised
nope, it's documented that he enjoyed reading stirner and there are too many similarities for example example Human Life chapter - The Three Metamorphoses in Zarathustra... and its not a teleological culmination of the whole humanity, just personal development.

>"He pilfered a copy of 'Ulysses', but it was possible the one book he did not finish. "What's the point of it? I suspect it was a bit of a joke by Joyce. He just kept his mouth shut as people read into it more than there was. Pseudo-intellectuals love to drop the name 'Ulysses' as their favorite book. I refused to be intellectually bullied into finishing it.""
