gen 6.5 confirmed, the Alola region will be a small series of islands located just off the coast of Kalos, which will be playable in its entirety.
How do we know this for sure? Three bits of Cast iron proof:
1) The strange souvenir is given to you in Kalos, there would not be one of these kicking about if it was not easy to obtain.
2) From Gen 5 onwards the regions will be following the patern of the previous gens, we have already had gen 1 repeated which was Gen 5, but due to time constraints they couldn't add a 3D version of Unova onto Kalos so Sun and Moon will be the same gen as Kalos in order to incorporate this concept but with Alola which like Unova is based on part of Poke-USA.
3) The region name "Alola" is clearly based on "Allo Allo" which is a popular sitcom about wartime France, or Kalos in the pokemon world.
Game, set and checkmate, SuMo is gen 6.5.

Just use your eyes people, you can clearly see the surf areas delimited by rocks like in every other games
The sea between islands will be crossed through boat cutscenes, like for the Seviis

Still it's disappointing to have an archipelago region with so few water routes
Im not saying they should have made it WindWaker style, but a water route between each island would have been nice
