Everything is pointing to a huge update/DLC. Most likely during the Bank update. It makes no sense for GF to start advertising a Pokémon Star/Rainbow/Prism A WEEK BEFORE SUN AND MOON ARE OFFICIALLY OUT, and on a dead as fuck handheld as well, all the 3DS is getting next is Mario Sports and then Pikmin. Sun and Moon will keep getting updates until the Switch game is ready, then the games will continue on that. There is no way the 3DS will be alive by 2018, so that kills any chance of a third version happening on it.
It all comes together.

But that's wrong, they're just not bought.
After you beat him in the Battle Tree and talk to him, Red gives you like 5 stones. I'd assume its the same with other trainers there.

Dark type in Japan is evil type. It's used for Pokemon that are malicious or don't play fair.

Supposing there is no national dex.
Would that REALLY be a terrible thing?
At least 85% of the total pokemon are entirely useless and pointless outside of filling the dex anyway. The rest are in the regional dex and/or competitive staples.
Filling out the national dex is just pointless busywork.
Keeping it to just the regional dex means these are the first games since the original Red/Blue where it's possible to completely fill up the dex using just the two base games, and that's not nothing

So basically, both the regular and Alolan forms of every other Alola form Pokemon will be legal in VGC2017, but only the Alolan forms of Raichu, Exeggutor, and Marowak will be legal, because it's impossible to get Alola-born versions of their normal forms.
