If you want it just for pokémon, get a 2DS, SM doesn't even support 3D in like 98% of the whole game.
If you want to play more than this, get a N3DS once and for all, don't update it and try to softmod it, you can even get SM for free and a shit ton of other games.

Hold select when booting Luma to open up the config menu, turn on "Enable region/language emu. and ext. .code" and press start

It shouldn't take that long. I caught three Pickup Meowth then did battles for a while with a stronger Pokémon in front so the Meowth would level up. Took maybe two hours to get a Destiny Knot (and interestingly, I actually got two at once, from the same battle!). Apparently you can get them at any level, but the chances do increase, and my Meowth were at Level 40 when I got them, if that helps.
