ITT: We discuss the philosophical implications of the determinism and foresight presented in Arrival (2016).
Personally I believe the 'gift' bestowed to the main character Louise was not a gift at all, but an eldritch horror that would in reality rob one's ability to experience true joy and 'aliveness' as it is the tension and pathos of not knowing one's future or the intricacies of an emotional experience beforehand that allows the will to power, the fundamental force that drives us to stay alive and experience and perceive things, to flourish. I doubt that someone who knew their own future moment for moment would appreciate life better, but instead would feel profoundly dead inside- perhaps to the extent of losing their humanity, and the ability to perceive and feel in a manner we would class as fully, humanly sentient.
Whether this is a bad thing or not is ultimately subjective and relies on whether you think human exceptionalism (the idea that the human experience is inherently worthwhile, profound and/or valuable) is correct, but I think it's an interesting area for discussion and regardless of my opinion on the film as a whole I'm glad it's an issue it has raised.
N.B. Accepting the inevitability of death in an act of attempted maturity and realism is not the same as this, because it is still unknown whether or not personal goals will be fulfilled and what human relationships one might experience in future and therefore there is still pathos and tension.
The film had its pros and cons like any other, maybe it led its audience by the hand too much, maybe it was technically excellent and deserved more Oscars, leave your bitchy factionism at the door.
Discuss?

Maybe, but if it feels like a memory, it's sort of like a sketch. Actually living and experiencing the event is in itself revelatory and a personal sensory experience.
>>80729311
It's more about appreciation of life, not "experiencing" as such.
If you would know your whole life from start to finish you would find beauty and joy from the smallest bits of moments in a day which you may take now for granted.
Here's an excerpt from an interview with Villeneuve to maybe clear things up for you:
>"The idea is that the heptapods see life like a [scripted] play. They know what will happen, so they have the choice — either they do it bored to death, or they embrace it and try to be at their best, like an actor on a stage."
So it's about embracing death (instead of denying it like we do) as an essential part of life and appreciating every waking moment of our lives.

>So it's about embracing death (instead of denying it like we do) as an essential part of life and appreciating every waking moment of our lives.
but as I said
>N.B. Accepting the inevitability of death in an act of attempted maturity and realism is not the same as this, because it is still unknown whether or not personal goals will be fulfilled and what human relationships one might experience in future and therefore there is still pathos and tension.
what Louise is having to do in the film is not just accept death, but accept every element of her life as predetermined as if it already happened and there's nothing new for her to explore in her entire existence
>>80729372
I agree this is a possible interpretation, but the way it's described in interviews, BTS material etc. suggests she really is experiencing every moment at once, even if the medium of film is limited in expressing this; i.e. that it's not just like a memory, but literally living all of those moments at the same time
i.e. she's not 'seeing the future' in the way we can 'see' our past, she's actually living it, all at once, most likely perpetually from her perspective

WW1 Bomber group goes on a crucial mission to destroy enemy weapons depot during winter offensive. They fly at a very high altitude to be safe from enemy magic users who can also fly. MC uses their magic device to fly up to their altitude in spite of it being theoretically impossible to do so and destroys the lead bomber. Instead of carrying on the mission THEN ENTIRE bomber group turns back and flees after just 1 dies.
