Brutal

Also I got the eyes done
>>
>>52580978

It's coming along swell bro, keep it up

>>52581766

As others have stated.

1. Brush control
2. the perfect amount of paint on your brush, your brush has to be wet with paint, but so much that the bristles are soaked with them. If you have too much paint your paint will blob out through the brustles and it won't be so clean.

2a. Get a sharp decent paintbrush, I used winsor and newton sable S. 7
2b. USE. A. WET. PALETTE. get paint on your brush, then wipe the excess off on a kitchen towel but use the same motion duncan does to keep the sharp tip and lightly, and gently pull the side of the brush (not the tip) across the edge of the model. If the paint blobs over and you don't have a thin line on the edge, you used too much paint.

>>52582306

It's probably plastic glue, which has fused the head and the torso together, which means you have to tear the head off which could damage it.

If it's super glue, which it probably isn't, pop it in the freezer for about 30 minutes and then just snap it off, as the superglue, which bonds, doesn't fuse, will become very brittle

>>52582678

Your guild ball stuff looks cool, the hair, imo, is too yellow on this dude, blonde hair doesn't look like that, Duncan actually did a good tutorial on "blonde" hair, as in reality blonde doesn't mean nuclear yellow, it's generally "sandy / bone" which in the case of this dude, bleeds into his very yellow apron. Otherwise good job.

>>52582891

very cool, superb!
>>
>>52583851
>>52583577
Thanks! Though I don't really intend on keeping them head anyways, what might be the best way to just tear off the head?
>>
>>52583936

If you don't want the head, just use your spru-clippers to snip it off as close to the torso without damaging it, then (I personally) would dig the rest out *carefully* with a hobby knife

Mephiston WIP. It's only at the basecoat stage.

I did his armour in Tamiya clear red for a blood soaked appearance. Specifically it was retributor gold, purple wash, Tamiya clear red ( thinned with rubbing alcohol).

It's pewter so I'm probably going to strip it and redo it because it's thick and messy. But is the general idea alright?

If you're really set on bloody armour, I'd say do the "flayed" parts bloddy and the flat panels clean.

You're overusing the blood effect making it lose impact

Also that converted arm looks like a bag of burning shit, at least take a actual marine arm and fit it, use the green stuff sparingly.

Made a little more progress on the 1000pt Warband. I built and magnetized 3 more dudes, got distracted half way through and magnetized my raptors, magnetized a few more weapons, and got the contemptor (stand in hellbrute) off the sprue and fiddled with magnetizing the guns, which worked pretty well.

By Sunday, I still need to:
>build and magnetize 3 more dudes
>finish another terminator and make 2 more combi-plasma
>glue the contemptor body
>build and magnetize the fist
>build a crypt Flayer aka chaos spawn

My rhinos were delayed, so I'll be borrowing rhinos from my SoB army to stand in. However, once my 1000pts is built, I can start painting squads.

HF recently released a bundle deal for some of their figures.
All basically wearing bodysuits.
Designs inspired by the Underworld deathdealers and a riff on Deadpool.
Not exactly what you are going for but good models, that should mesh well with eldar and most of them use pistols iirc.

The only other thing I can think of with guys wearing suits are gangster minis from Foundry, Copplestone and Northstar games, they'll look pretty out of place next to Eldar minis I think.

You could try and see if you can find something useful from Infinity, but there are only a few models that wear their equivalent of what would be a suit.

You will be proud of your first model despite it looking like shit. You'll improve until you will be disappointed by your models despite them looking good.

Just paint and paint and paint, you will improve naturally. Look at videos if you need to learn advanced techniques like blending and non metallic metal.

Just remember, one thick coat is better and multiple thin coats and drink your paint water.

Direct colour wheel approach is for making highway billboards and wall-poster to compete with neon signs.

Contrasting primary colours at full saturation on a model is a recipe for disaster.

You need to work with brightness and saturation

Personally I'd recommend a Split complimentary, where either the main or then complimentary colour is lower saturation.

Here's an example.

The purple contrast with the gold,, rose accent the purple, the white add brightness without too much noise, the black calms it down.

The varied saturation and not 100% opposite base colours help make it bearable.

Already it's much less eye watering.

Again I'll defy the wisdom of the colour wheel and say the accent should always support the main colour.

So i went with a warm gold to support the red

With all these decently saturated colours it need to be brought down a little, so i wen tiwth clack undersuit and piping

Now as is shoulder/face/knees as contrasting colour gives it an action figure look so I just fucked around a little until i found something i though looked decent.

While you're just playing around never get stuck on an idea, always mess around, something great may come out of it, if not you can just go back.

Af for the black/blue, I used a grey, not the black so there will be stronger contrast with full on black, but you can always play around, maybe when you get good brush control you can edge the black badge with steel colour, or do the badge IN steel with black edges

SIlvery metals and blue go great together.

I mostly use 2x1mm magnets and a 3/32 drill bit in a pin vise. You can use smaller bits to start the hole and build up to 3/32, but I've found that I can use my knife to the same effect.

For all dudes, I always build legs and torso first. For Marines with just a weapon getting magnetized, I'll get the arm the gun hand attaches to and drill it out with the 3/32 bit. It will take most of the arms width, so be careful. Do the same thing for any gun hands. Then I just press the magnet into the hole using a piece that's already built so I don't have to worry about polarity.

Then, I attach the gun to the arm and dry fit the arms to the torso to see if the gun sit right. I like using my Autocannons for this because it holds the left arm. Then, I glue the arms to the torso with the gun to get the position I want.

Sgts have more magnets, but are easier because it's just drilling holes and setting magnets. I drill a spot on either side of the torso, then the arms, use already magnetized bits to apply magnets, and do the same for the head and back pack.

It's remarkably easy.

I haven't figured that out yet, however, I was thinking of putting magnetic tape on the inside of the shoulder maybe and a magnet on the outside of the shoulder. I don't know, but it kind of looks like there is a layer of water effects that had brown in added into it after it was poured.
If you add a drop of ink and move it around with a toothpick or something you might be able to get a similar effect.

The green looks more opaqe. Maybe this was done with two layers.
Can't really tell. Maybe the water effect was tinted slightly green before mixing and the brown was added later.
In the shallow areas the effect looks transparent, but the deeper it gets the greener the puddle seems, so that could be it.

Not sure though.

Maybe you can experiment a few times before doing it on a base.

Posting my third slaughterpriest. I think he's about ready for paint.
This was the free one that came with WD a few months ago. I already have one of these built completely standard, so I needed to make him different. None of the weapon bits I tried worked well with him, so I gave him a huge mutant arm from a crypt horror.
>>
>>52592734
Nice work, really like what you did here.
Also nice to see the old head from the chaos mutation sprue in a new context. Works really well in terms of scale too.
The only thing I'm not sure about is the upside down punch dagger thingy under his right shoulderpad. It covers so much of the arm the pose is hard to read in the top right image.
Other than that two thumbs up from me.
Also a good eye for scale with the crypt horror arm.

Go for something neutral.
blue, silver and white would go together and the purple would bring a contrast to that for example.
So you keep the color range in the cool shades and the purple introduces some warmth.

You're right, it's just difficult to get this nagging voice in my head.

I decided to take a good look at the sprues for the SO and if I see properly, the headcrest is attached to the gorget, the chest is attached to a section of the back and then there's a separate back piece with the exhaust.

This means after assembling all of them, you have 2 extra headcrests/gorgets and the parts necessary to make a complete torso! This way I can actually convert my Indomitus Sorcerer into a wicked custom pattern of both with a bunch of extra detail. Alright, I'm sold. I love my old termies but it's time to transfer their dust into new and improved bodies.

That said, anyone have any tips on facial detailing, specifically eyes? I had to try a couple tries to get my cultist's eyes remotely straight with no paint bleeding from the iris to the cheek, and that cost me some quality with having to re-layer the skintone a few times.

IMO eyes are overrated. I usually just paint them flesh tone like the rest of the head and fill em in a little bit heavier with the ink.
If you're just going for average table quality, if you can't do the eyes, don't, or else it'll just detract from an otherwise decent figure.

Use a very fine brush. Paint the eye sockets black. Then, paint a little bit of white over that for the actual eye. Then add a dot of black for the iris (or whatever color you want the iris to be). Remember to paint them as ovals, not circles. Also remember to thin ya paints and have as little paint on the brush as possible when doing fine details. It takes practice, but you'll get the hang of it.

This being said, I would only recommend doing it for important minis, like characters and such. Grunts aren't usually worth the effort.

They're listed as 25mm but are general size.
A bit expensive but I'm an experienced recaster so I duplicate whatever I get from them. $50 for a two part resin and two part silicone kit, mould release agent and a few extras. All you need are lego, a plastic syringe, mixing cups and a stirrer. Look up how-to's on youtube. With metal masters it's incredibly easy to recreate.

I've always wanted to get into 40k, it looks like a bit of fun. But the whole fandom and player base really puts me off. The few people ive come across that play the game are full blown autistic, over weight neck beards, the typical "for the emperor" type shit stereotype.
what do?
>>
>>52600121
The game is only as fun as your opponents make it. Unless you can find socially acceptable people/make friends play it or even buy enough models to introduce others then I wouldn't advise it. Do some research and try to find the game stores in your area.
>>
>>52586369

Play the video games, Dawn of War, Space Marine, Battlefleet Gothic and the like. Get your friends to plays said video games with you. Then, get them to try out tabletop or the RPGs with you.

YMMV, but that's how I did it. It even worked with my normie friends.
>>
>>52600121
Look for a (war) gaming club in your area. People that go play at your local GW or FLGS are almost always the kind of fat autistic neckbeards that can't get real friends or are too autistic for a club.

If that fails, start your own and invite acceptable people.

can I basecoat a normie marine for salamander's colors with Caliban Green instead of a black basecoat?
will this make the gold details harder to paint later on or will it be ok as it's a pretty dark green?

I thought it might make the greens look better if the basecoat was also green but I don't have much reason for thinking this so figured I'd ask

It might be slightly tougher since you lose the natural shades black priming gives you, but all in all colored primers usually make things much easier-faster.

No. I had to cut the joints and only have an xacto knife, no saw. The first cut was bad. The later joints are much better, but that's also why we have green stuff. Also note that the edges are actually smooth. I realized the picture makes them look rough, though the MM was rather rough before the GS.

>>52600840

Fuck me. That's a great idea. Thankfully, I have a second boxed set!
>>
>>52600860
Basecoat is not the same as primer.

Primer/Undercoat is a textured paint to improve paint adherence and provide a even colour for the basecoat to go onto.

Basecoat is the base colour of a given area, applied after Primer/Undercoat, but before layers, shadows and highlights.

With GW paints only the white and black are real primers, their coloured spays are basecoats in a can.

Af for the gold question, I'd reccomend you lay down a yellow/brown/red base in that area before working with the gold, metallics are finicky.
>>

No they aren't. Find any official description of Chaos Black or Corax White that uses the word primer.
>>
>>52600954
Primer/Undercoat

Primers are textured to provide grip for subsequent paint layers, it may or may not me coloured

Undercoats are primers with colour added to ensure uniform coloration of subsequent paint.

Do it. But make sure to keep all the pieces "clean", match the poses right, and make sure everything fits.
Do experiment with colours and designs first. Try sketching out a rough idea, then locate the potential parts, then put them together.
It may not be mechanised miss universe, but it will probably be pretty cool.

>Flames should be lightest in colour at their tips
that's wrong though, the brightest point of flames should be the base
>>
>>52604098
While your version is by no means a golden demon winner it is still a pretty solid paintjob.
Not a display piece, but it's fine.

You don't HAVE to wait until somebody tells you your painting is good enough to tackle the projects you like.
The whole point of this hobby is to have fun.
If you enjoyed painting the model you got your money's worth out of it imo. If there are people telling you otherwise keep in mind that that is just because it's a relatively expensive model.

In any case you can always start over.

But waiting until you magically get good is silly. Getting better happens by picking a challenging project, like the one you just finished.

Don't take the criticism here too personal or let it take away your motivation.
Take what you can use of it.

Part of getting better is actively asking for feedback on what you did.
But part of that is also learning how to take feeback. Or when to go with our own gut. It's a skill you're gonna learn too.

Anyway I'm gonna get off the soapbox.

Just wanted to let you know that your hobby should never make you feel bad, even if people shit all over your work.

It's probably the unfinished base where you can see the paint work. I think the colors are fine. The overall brown looks like wood, the green like moss, and the turquoise makes a good spot color and I have seen trees IRL with little spots of turquoise from some kind of growth.

Definitely go with the yellow bow colour. You need to tie it into the model.

Isn't there a great helm that you can use instead of Guillimans helmet? The laurels don't fit the Lion.

it's like 3 times the size of all the other helmets in the game.

Trying to glue this little turd. The tail is so small it kept being push away from the tweezers due to static force. Looked like it was running away not wanting to be glued.

Hey I am thinking of using an old damaged Rhino and turning it into a terrain piece with a little narrative. Would anyone know off the top of their head where I can find a couple mini's of children/ young characters kneeling as I plan on having them treating the torn destroyed vehicle as an impromptu shelter and home.

Posted it in the 40kg thread already, what do you guys think? The orange bits where I fucked up the paint tool aren't intentional but perhaps it could look good with spots of rust as contrast

I'm not going to be able to do anything that nice. I was just restoring this old 1999 Rhino and I just imagined it in it's current destroyed state as a home to survivors of war.

no idea about kneeling kids, but you can get a bunch of kid minis from Hasslefree and Reaper.
Foundry might have some in their civilians range.

Depends if you're playing at a GW store or not. Both would look nice, I'm not sure what scale the maxmini heads are, but only the SG heads will be 'legal' at a GW store.

Lighten the sword, it looks too dark.
Add some slight highlights to the helm, and lighten the eyes and make the laurels more green to add contrast.
Highlight the more obvious gold pieces a bit more, such as the left shoulder. You could use a dry brush, fine layer brush or rub n buff.
Use a wash on some of the purity seals, probably some kind of brown. Furthermore, you could possibly clean the blue-gold transitions with another wash, but that might darken the blue too much.
That's my advice, take it as you want to.
