Sup WIP, i have a question-

I was in the last thread asking about stripping a X-wing ship after a less-than-stellar repaint.

I poured the Simple Green I had into a bucket and put the ship in, but I have 1 issue-

The ship floats.

I could get around this by stripping it one half at a time, but I was wondering if simple green can dissolve plastic after a long period of time.

So /wip/, tell me- Does simple green deteriorate plastic after a long period of time?
>>
>>52371550
It shouldn't, but why not weigh the ship down with something?
>>
>>52368178

What kind of questions?

Pardon for the Australiaization. Only have a phone camera.

This is my quasi-Bretonnia knight. White is definitely not an easy color to paint. My painting skills have been improving (I'm very good with blues and darker colors), but I'm mostly pleased with how the knight turned out. He is the standard bearer for my knights in whfb 3rd, and a normal knight in my song of blades and heroes warband.

Tips?

Last pic was actually horrible. Lance is bet btw because it is molded to the Knights legs, which had to be stretched so he could fit the horse.

I don't have any of that in my apartment on-hand, and it's 2 AM.

Simple green does not damage plastic. It's largely pretty good at getting paint off.

Protip for painting white, you want to start with a grey (a dark one is good for building up to high contrast if you want) rather than just paint it 'white'. Second pic looks better but you need to crank up the shadow/highlight contrasts in your red and white.

I actually do grey undercoats in general. Right now my goal is to get a warband or three on the table for SOBAH. Overtime I'll def be coming back to improve on what I have done so far.

My general method for painting white has been: Grey undercoat > Grey base coat > white/grey layer > white. Obviously not a very nuanced way of doing it, but I'm open to suggestions

Here is another miniature I painted. Unfinished horse.
>>
>>52372329

Try starting with a darker grey as your basecoat as you work up to white then, I think a little more contrast will really help your details come out.

Hey guys, just finished a game of table top 40k with my girlfriend. Trying out these converted grotesques I am currently painted. First time using them and they are pretty bad ass. What do you guys think of the paint scheme? It is supposed to look like there flesh is ripped off and the muscle under is exposed.
>>
>>52373127
You MUST use a spay primer. They go on the thinnest, easiest and streak free. Krylon and rustolium are good, any flat matte spay, black, grey or white. If you have an army scheme in mind the gw or army painter spay cans will save you a lot of time. I would suggest them, they are worth the price in the time they will save you.
>>
Guys, what's the best place to buy bitz online?

eBay seems like a bad place if you want specific parts and not just a big bag of random bitz.
>>
>>52373234
>You MUST use a spay primer.

Wrong. There is nothing wrong with priming by brush if you can't spray outside because of the climate. Vallejo Surface Primers intended for airbrush use work perfectly fine if applied by a regular brush.
Yes, spraying is faster, and yes, spraying is usually smoother (especially with a beginner in mind) but that doesn't mean that its impossible to get good results with a brush.
>>
>>52373254

It really depends on what you are looking for.

In the past i had a good experience with "bitzstore dot com" in france, but there are plenty others too.

I hope they're unfinished anon. The idea is fine, but the execution really needs more.
>>
>>52371969
it's a potent surfactant (ie. it removes the paint by breaking up its surface and letting other active ingredients get under it), but none of the ingredients in simple green are strong enough to damage plastic.
It's mostly soap and pine-oil.

Mix it with paint and mixing medium, plain white gesso often gives subpar results, especially with that brand.
>>
>>52373909
Its a possibility, but for that you have to have a garage. I used to go out on my balcony, but in my new apartment i don't have one. I have a cellar though, but its kinda moist and it gets super moist during winter so that option is off the table for at least 3-4 month per year.

The best thing would be an airbrush i guess.
>>
>>52373263
I've had decent results with Reaper's brush on white primer, although looking at a just primed model you would not think so.
>>
How to paint black metal?
leadbelcher + nuln oil washes isn't just cutting it
>>
>>52374147
If you don't want to prime by hand and don't want to get an airbrush, you can make a cheap spray booth. Get a big plastic storage bin, duct tape, 10' of collapsible silver ring ducting, a small 3-5' fan, a large fan and some cardboard. Cut a hole in the plastic, attach the small fan, then attach the duct to to hehe fan. Apply duct tape liberally. Point large fan to bin at lowest setting. Place end of duct out open window, seal rest of opening with cardboard.
Congratulations, you have a cheap spray booth!
>>
>>52374220
Either mix the Leadbelcher with Abaddon black, or paint straight black and edge-highlight with Leadbelcher. Depends on how black you want it to get.

Any good sites for making bases? The list above didn't show any base sculpting/crafting that I saw.

I was wanting to make the ground look like it had been struck by thunder on some bases but not sure how to go about it. I was also thinking about Lava bases for some other minis as well. For that one I was thinking maybe a thin layer of green stuff then using a tool to make little lines in the grren stuff then painting the top black/grey and the lines ri look like fire/lava below it.

Do you recommend I just get both retributor and liberator gold? They complement each other I think. Had posted in the previous thread that I have some Vallejo Game Glorious Gold but the Vallejo Game metallics tend to be really shit. Could save this for dioramas and terrain and get a good tub or two.

Also a question because some the vallejo game paints I have are so watery that they're a borderline wash, so it got me thinking. Is there some additive I can mix with regular paint to create a wash? I understand if I just put water, I'll create a glaze at best.

Tested out a forest camo patter on one of the side panels of a trukk. Undercoated with Chaos black, the left started with Dryad bark and the right with Waaagh flesh, the inverse are their second colors, third is Ushabati bone, and the fourth is Abaddon black. It's a bit slopping but it's an Ork vehicle so whatevs. I personally feel the right looks better but a friend preferred the left.

>>
>>52376011
blue or purple maybe.
>>
>>52375681
If you're new to doing skin, do the same steps in that video, but stop after applying reapplying the base layer after you shade.

So the steps go:
Base color >> Shade >>highlight with base color

See how it looks, and add another highlight if you feel the need.

Odds are, for most models, this can get you a surprising good result. Not great, but good enough as you work to get better.

Word of caution... if you're going with my suggestion, don't use Bugman's glow. Your flesh will look VERY dark, start with either a mix of cadian fleshtone and bugman's glow, or just cadian fleshtone.

Don't forget that shades can be thinned as well. For some faces that don't need a lot of definition, i'll thin whatever shade i'm using down a little to get softer shadows

For the 10 guardsmen, I've been getting bolder in my conversions.
This trooper is pulling the pin out of a grenade--a pose I blatantly stole from a Forge World Krieger.
I cut away the gun from his left hand and had to green-stuff the butt of it back on. Both his hands are swapped out--the right is the Cadian grenade hand, and the left is the flamer/grenade launcher bracing hand. The gun's handle is from a Cadian lasgun.

I used the least dynamic pair of legs on this guy, and I think that the leg pose on both the sergeant model AND the other trooper model (see the above vox caster for reference) give a better "about to throw" pose.

This is the model I'm currently working on. I want a more involved vox pose, so I like the "hand at the ear" stance. I'm not sure about the other hand, though. As an alternative, I'm thinking of having the model hold the gun from the handle on top instead of the grip.

Thanks!
I didn't buy the Prince August intro set, I picked up a set of 63 Imperial grunts on eBay. I want more than 63 guardsmen, though, so I'll probably buy the Prince August 80 pack later this year.

The plastic is VERY HARD, and it is a pain to work with. On this guy >>52377253, I actually broke my X-acto knife trying to cut the rifle off of his right hand. I've had to use clippers for any kind of serious cutting, and I think I'm going to have to get a jeweler's saw to remove limbs.
The oldest GW plastics I've worked with are the 5 pack of plastic plague marines, and those are so much easier to work with.

Mix sand and normal, white school glue together, almost a 1 to 1 ratio. You want each piece of sand to be covered in glue, but the glue to be thick and grainy with the sand. Lather your bases with it, prime, then paint it brown. Drybrush it a lighter brown if you want to be really fancy.
>>
>>52377767
Metal is just like plastic but more resilient. It will work fine.
>>

Top row: Ninja Turtle (?), Sage, Minstrel, [not sure, maybe Dakarba the old witch?], Groo the Wanderer, Taranto the thief, some wench (not from Groo), skeleton playing mandolin

>Awesome

You're welcome. I didn't even know these were a thing until I came in here this morning, but the certainly are!

I've been a fan of Sergio's for decades. Other than Al Jaffee, he is the oldest surviving contributor to MAD Magazine, and he still draws some of the funniest strips ("A MAD Look At..." and "Marginal Thinking"). Groo has been tossed around from publisher to publisher, running under Marvel's Epic imprint at one point, but also at Image Comics. I'm sure Sergio owns the characters.

Mark Evanier, who helps write and edit for Sergio said that Sergio is the only cartoonist he knew that made caricatures of himself that were *less* attractive than he looks in real life.

The old witch is a different character than I thought - not Arba of "Arba and Dakarba" (a play on the magic words "Abracadabra"). In this picture, your model is sixth from the left.

>>
>>52378821

>>
>>52378832

You, as a man, when you see excellence should strive to obtain it for yourself.

>I will practice

For Thousands of years people have been inspired by great works of art and then set out on their own journey.

I have been inspired to start armies and paint schemes based on awesome models I've seen and roughly several universes away from my own stuff, even Michelangelo while mostly self-inspired, drew his reference from a number of artists including Ghiberti, Ghilandaio and Giovanni.

I... don't get it.

It's someone else's work. Someoen with a completely different set of skills, disciplines and attitudes. Right from the get-go I'm incapable of replicating it. I mena, it might be nice to think I could eventually make something similar, but it's impossible. I can only do the best of MY abilities, so dreaming to acheieve someone else's level is futile, no?

>but it's impossible
>I can only do the best of MY abilities, so dreaming to acheieve someone else's level is futile, no?
Do you think everyone is popped out of their mom vagina being a master of their craft or something? Everyone had to work their ass to become as good as they are to whatever they are good at, just like everyone else. If that person had been a little bitch like you and given up before he even started to try, practice and work his ass to git gud he wouldn't have ever reached the level he is at.
>>
>>52379419
No, pretty sure I dangle down there.

Don't get me wrong, I understand liking someone's work. And yeah, I would liek to get better. But I don't understand how the two connect, except in a negative fashion (i.e. "Oh wow, I'll never get to that level, I should give up, etc."). Someone else succeeding doesn't make me feel liek I can succeed. It doesn't tell me anything except that they acheieved it.

>>52379463
I'm aware they've worked their ass off. But jsut because I do the same doesn't mean I'll also succeed; I'm a different person to them. My limits, learning capabilty etc. are different. My personal development will take a different route and reach a different plataeu.
>>
>>52379056
Skills and abilities can be gained. I think you'll be surprised at how fast you get good at stuff when you really put your mind to it and invest in the right tools.

Not to say that you'll eventually be the best or even that you'll be anywhere as good as your heroes, but you can;t be sure if you've never really committed to trying.

>>52379419

It shows you, this is how good this piece of plastic can looks. Doesn't it bother you that you can't do it yourself? Doesn't it light a little fire in you that tells you to reach that level, to be the guy posting the image that causes little fires in everyone else?

Inspiration is a beautiful thing.

Where can I get a whole pile of one-handed bolter arms (and, preferably, left arms as well) for 30k Mk3 marines? They're Blackshields, so I can mix marks a bit. I need somewhere between 100 and 150 pairs total, but I don't need all of them at once.

My first airbrush was an Iwata Neo, very good, never had problems with it and it's recommended for beginners. You'll also need a compressor (preferably one with a tank) and you'll also find a spray booth and airbrush cleaning station very useful.

Don't listen to >>52380646, I use Vallejo Model Air and Scale75 metallics through my airbrush and they come out looking fantastic. Especially the Scale75 metallics, they're absolutely beautiful to the point that I'm considering buying robot models just to paint them with those paints.

The Vallejo air metallics are great, and cheap compared to GW.

Look up videos and tutorials on youtube, make sure to try on paper then sprue first.

You can (and should) get the Vallejo airbrush primer, the black one at least and hrey if you do light colours.

Honestly for Airbrushing the Vallejp Air range is top notch.

Don't forget to clean it regularly, careful with the needle, it's fragile as fuck and very sharp. The nozzle is fragile as well, broke mine by trying to tighten it too much.

You should stay between 20 ans 30 psi to avoid any problems.

Probably around £300 for everything, including paints and primer (depending on how many you buy, obviously).

GW sell their paints as Air paints but hilariously they're still in their shitty pots so are incredibly irritating to try try and use in an airbrush, you'd probably have to decant them into dropper bottles. I wouldn't try using the normal Auric Armour as it's probably too thick to go through the airbrush and thinning it consistently would probably be a pain in the arse. Scale75's Elven Gold and Vallejo Model Air's Gold are probably going to be the closest match. I've heard good things about the Vallejo Liquid Gold range but they're alcohol based and I prefer waterbased acrylics so I have no experience with them.
>>

Noob here as well, just finished Khorne Bloodbound from AoS starter set - here's the newbie way to get the skin decent:

>Rakath Flesh (Base)
>Flayed One Flesh
>Reikland Fleshshade (Shade)
> (Drybrush) Flayed One Flesh
>Reikland Fleshshade (shade - watered down to about half the intensity with Lamian Medium)

Should get you a decent look, if you'd like, you can touch up the worst spots with flayed one flesh after you've dry-brushed it.

Good luck, anon!

I had asked this myself last thread and this one actually. I have Vallejo Game Colour "Glorious Gold" and it's shit. The coverage is arse, it's either a thick goop or glittery water that gets fucking everywhere. I was heavily recommended GW's Retributor and Liberator golds. That plus pictures and videos I've googled seem to give a great image of the paints. Real nice coverage with beautiful shine.

The new white top GW metallics are pretty good. The VGC metallics are shite yes, but the VMA are really good, especially when airbrushed but can be done by brush as well. I'd also like to shill Scale75, they're really fantastic paints and I don't think enough people use them.

If you rough up primer with sandpaper all you'll do is sand the primer off. What material is the model made of? What did you use to prime it?

What the fuck?

Also, you can't fill gaps with glue, it's not thick enough. You'll just destroy the texture of the model and make a lot of mess.

If you're using something like super glue, it's just going to go into the gaps without filling them. It might also rough up the texture of the plastic.
So use green stuff, and then sand if needed.
>>
>>52382301
Did you buy the matte rustoleum primer or a glossy one? Did you clean the model before priming? Did you handle it excessively before priming?

Glossy primer may make it difficult for paint to adhere to it properly, I'd advise just painting over the glossy spots with some brush-on primer like Vallejo's polyurethane primers or stripping the primer off and trying again. You could try testing the primer on some spare sprue to see if you get the gloss again.
>>
>>52382159
>meme airbrush osl

Well, at least slightly better than usual.
>>
>>52382353
A la carte; Buy the CS, the compressor, a hose, and the cleaning pot separately. You're probably at @ 250 tops. Stand's not bad, but you can usually use a cleaning pot as one. Mixing cups are usually totally unnecessary (you mix in the brush's cup).
>>
>>52382427
Ok thanks.

So to be sure, I should glue the halves together, wait to dry, fill in the parts with GS, then re-prime?

I try to paint my marines in as many parts as I can so I don't have areas that are hard to get to. I guess that doesn't work for vehicles.
>>
>>52378196
B for sure
>>
>>52382353
well let me explain my experience to you so you can better understand what i meen

I got an airbrush because i wanted to really crank up my painting game and am the type of person were i want to get better after every single model i paint

I bought the master brush and compressor kit which ran me around 80$. couple of things

the master brush was shit, it clogged constantly and was poorly built. it would gunk up due to design tolerances and be a general headache to use. it eventually broke after i had to take it apart for the millionth time and thats when i decided to buy a real airbrush

I bought this airbrush https://www.amazon.com/Badger-Air-Brush-RK-1-Additional-Regulator/dp/B0078MEXX8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1490565086&sr=8-1&keywords=badger+krome And have never regretted it, it is totally worth the investment and i still use my shitty compressor which works fine for me. the compressor only comes into play when you are applying really detailed coats, and even then if you are careful you can make it work just fine

just save yourself teh headache of finding out which homebrew thinners do and dont work and just by vallejo airbrush thinner and avoid thinning with water unless it is distilled, and make sure to religiously clean the brush after every spray to keep it from gunking

when you think your paint, get it to the consistency were it is thin but also sticks to the cup. This is the hardest part to figure out and you WILL NEED TRIAL AND ERROR.

I prefer to use 20 psi for general painting of miniatures and less than 10 for details, but i also use a .2 needles which may account for this.

any more questions?

1. Don't worry, SM bikes have the reputation of being some of the worst GW models to properly assembly
2. It looks like you didn't press the halves together enough, leaving a small gap. You're supposed to glue them together and them sand the middle like in pic related.
3. just use some putty/green stuff to fill the gap
4. NEVER prime before you finish the assembly
>>
>>52382496
my first time using osl like this and i agree that its a bit rough and am not going to use it in the future, in fact, i may just paint over it.

>>52382496
>I dont understand the obsession with painting the headlights like that. 9/10 times it always looks awful.

Yeah, less is definitely more when it comes to airbrushed OSL (and OSL in general). The headlights would only look like that if the tank was driving somewhere at night with no ambient light, and the rest of the tank isn't painted like that was the case, so the headlights look really strange.

>That is going to make so many parts hard to paint
....you know you don't have to paint the parts ther're going to sit on?
>>
>>52382548
no problem

also do not give up if it does not work out in the beginning, airbrush painting is completely different than regular painting in terms of style

this guy does a lot of painting tutorials in were he uses an airbrush and he explains a lot of the theory behind it and techniques to use. he is also just a genuinly good painter and i learned a lot from him
https://www.youtube.com/user/OrcPainterNerd

>>52382592
to clarify you always use the compressor, the advantage of a tank compressor is that the airflow which pushes the paint out is more consistent, so sometimes when painting up close detail irregular amounts of paint can come out

but i usually find this easily avoidable by just being super careful and going slow + using a low psi range for up close detail.

>>
>>52383163
You've used a bone or a white for the claws. Those colours need to be thinned very well and then applied in a fair few thin coats.

People in these threads always say to thin your paints, and they're right, but they don't say the other thing that is very important when working with thinned paints - don't overload your brush! It doesn't matter how thin your paints are if you're splashing huge gobs of paint on to your mini.

As for the mini, the purple highlights on the carapace need to be cleaned up and made thinner, teeth and claws obviously need work. The red looks alright, you've got some hairs and a few lumps but for a first model it's not too bad. Instead of washing the whole model and then re-applying the basecoat, you can just apply wash into the recesses, which saves you time and only requires a little cleanup. It's also useful for learning brush control.

Looks very decent anon.

Nitpick crits; mouldlines need to be removed, edge highlights especially on the turret could do with being thinner, the lenses could be blended smoother and some gloss varnish would be nice, the scroll needs some writing

You've got really nice green transitions on the main body of the tank. Everything seems pretty clean apart from the aforementioned.
As for improvements the smoke staining on the exhaust vents could be done better (Vallejo Smoke, as the name suggests is excellent for this), as could the mud weathering at the bottom. Pigments are excellent for this, but the GW texture paints will work if they're all you have access to.

I'm pretty sure the decal sheet that comes with the vehicles has some sort of transfer for the scroll, so you don't have to worry about freehand. If you want to develop your skill, look up some tutorials on how to paint calligraphy on miniatures and then practice on some paper until you're confident.

Weathering is a huge topic and there are tons of resources out there to learn from, I'd highly recommend looking into pigment weathering as I love the realistic look it gives. It would contrast nicely with your smooth greens on the body of the tank.

I used mig's oilbrushers and tamiya enamel thinner. It is easier to use than normal oil paints.

>less than 10 psi for details
What the fuck?

How the fuck are you sharting paint onto your model at that psi, and painting 'details'.

Define 'details' because one does not paint details with an airbrush.

This head is only a wash and a couple airbrush colors, thats it

Not saying its the best, but you can paint details with an airbrush if you really try

Generally though what i meen by detail is very soft hoghlights and colors that you want to build up rather than just plop down on a surface

anon, what the hell is up with that filter? that being said i like the colors on the face

Yikes!

What a waste of a plasma annihilator!

I like A since it engages all the minis. For B, the marine staring straight ahead just seems kinda... redundant, I guess? Feels a bit out of place, whilst A feels like it has more of a story going on.

What has that got to do with anything? Even at the basic level of taking a photo you should be able to set the resolution you're taking photos at.

Anybody without a Johnny who wants one should seriously consider bidding on this lot - not just for him, but the other goodies as well. I would, if I didn't already have all of them.
