It won't be good, but there's a few things you can do to make it suck less. Note: suck less is the operative word. You'll be able to play against other fluffy players from mid/low tier armies. It basically relies on trying to go all in on having too many boyz to kill.

>1) Grots out front.
They act as cover and eat charges. They will die, but that's the plan. If they get close enough, they can eat an overwatch for the boyz. (They won't.)

>2) Boyz mobs on da march
Sluggas should be cheap as chips. 'Evy is a bad investment, and the sluggas will want to run. Big shootas are cheap though, and if the grots in front didn't run fast enough, a couple shots beats standing around doing nothing.
Shootas should always take max special weapons. Probably don't bother with 'evy here either.
Nobz in these mobs should probably have a PK and bosspole. Breaking heads is on average less than two casualties BUT it's the variance that'll kill you. Still, beats running off.

>3) Bosses
Warboss for waaagh! is a must. Probably just give him 'evy, lukky stick and pk to keep him lean and green.
Megaboss at the front of lootas is a funny trick though, you can give the lootas SnP Relentless so they can shoot on the move and hide behind the Megaboss.

>4) Support:
Mek Gunz are good, and can cover some weaknesses. Dreads are also decent, mainly to eat overwatch before boyz charge in. However you need lots or none at all on dreads, otherwise you're just giving their anti-tank targets, so probably stick with Mek Gunz.

>5) Wazza:
Fast attack should likely be warbikes. They can support your boyz in melee, and target problem squads with dakka.
Other option is stormboyz for moreboyz.jpg. Fragile as fuck, but can use their movement to hide as the footsloggas advance up the table, then jump out with the main charge mostly unscathed.

Elites should likely be last priority. Tankbustas or Manz Missiles. Either way, any trukk you give them will die fast if it can be seen.

Big overcosted walker with an assault squad inside that can't assault out of it.

If you really want to run one it's better to either throw a repair crew inside or a dakka squad like burnas or tank bustas. They can at least pop out and shoot.

Im moving soon and plan on buying a new army when I get to my new LGS. I want to focus an army around the weird 6's do something mechanic like rending or guass.

My original thoughts were to go Necrons but I've been thinking recently that I could instead go for deamons of slaanesh and nurgle to complement my chaos marines.

How bad are daemons of nurgle or slaanesh compared to average lists? I dont want to go full tzeentch but I dont want to get stomped either.

Trukks get better with loads of buggies/grot tanks to cover them. So do mekboy junkas (which can KFF the nearby vehicles). Some big trakks to finish and Gork's ya uncle. It's still not great, but I'd rate it over bikerspam right now.

They haven't always done better than RT, but they haven't regressed. They just stopped going for the goofy cartoon-y feel.

It's my first army, and my real struggle is that I don't have a good idea on what weapons/wargear to deck out my terminator units so any help there would be appreciated.

I planned this to have the first 3 noise squads sit back and be shooty, the 4th squad to advance to objectives and be a bit more durable.

Then for the terminators in close combat I have the lord and sorcerer, I am not against changing to two chaos lords, I really don't know there.

As for the 3 terminator squads I figured the champion needs a sword for challenges, needed a power fist for the x2 AP2, and the lightning claws I really don't know I was kind of thinking that it would help me deal with smaller hordes of units.

Can I get some help?

The kid I'm playing with has the Death Masque Harlequins so I figured I'd use the few elder I have to make a unified force.

They are worse than they used to be, however, if you are EXTREMELY skilled, they can compete with even the top armies.

To make them MUCH easier to play, consider Craftworld Eldar allies.

DE are a shooting army, don't expect to play melee and do well.

I got to play my first game today, and it was not a great experience. I'm not sure if it's common practice, but I played against a tau player and he switched out some units after seeing that I had an imperial fist army and I am not sure what exactly did it but I got slaughtered in two turns.

He had some of those riptides I hear so much about, but it was more his attitude and refusal to let me take time too look things up that really sucked.

Is this normal? Have any of y'all had this happen?

What did your list look like? Tau are a strong army in that very few options are straight bad and a handful (like the Riptide) are OP. Space Marines have the potential to be one of the strongest armies in the game, but they also have tons of shitty units and builds.

If your opponent wants to bring a different list because you're fielding a super-heavy, that's maybe acceptable. His list was basically two riptides and a suit deathstar backed up by some point filling fire warriors and stealth suits with some of those Tetra things

Admittedly he was a shit player, he grouped up all his suits and my russes made fucking mincemeat of them, a few of them fucked up their deep strike onto an infantry squad too, kek. The riptides were bullshit but he obligingly shot at the conscipt I fed to them and managed to get rid of one with the CCS and my executioner

When I was raping his crisis suits I ran a bunch of squads around, capped objectives and camped in cover while my other vets removed those stupid markerlights dudes.

Other units

Kommandos are hands-down one of the worst Ork units in a codex that is jam packed full of them. If Ignore Cover wasn't handed out like candy, and if Orks hit harder than wet noodles in close combat, and if you could assault from Infiltrate/Reserves, Kommandos might be worth a look. As it is, they're a complete waste of points. Look at Genestealer Cults if you want to see what Kommandos should be like.

Models are absolutely stunning though.

Armored Sentinels with Plasma Cannons. A bit more costly, but 10 pts means each sentinel won't be dying to bolters and will be spitting out plasma cupcakes at MEQ instead of peashooting single kraks at them.

Also, your CCS and PCS give orders to your grunts. That makes them targets for your opponents, and since they have no transport to hide in, they are easily killed. If, however, they are in a chimera, they are both 1) protected and 2) now have the special rule Mobile Command Vehicle, which slightly extends the range they can give orders.

Also, you're really missing the backbone of the guard. No tonks?

I personally prefer more power fists in exchange for the power swords. I've had 2 power fist death company marines beat the ever living shit out of an untouched imperial knight with ease. You'll have enough chainsword meatshields to tank hits so your fists can fuck up just about any unit at lower initiative. If you have any spare points after that, I would recommend throwing a heavy flamer on the dreads. Not compulsory, but it'll be nice versatility were you to fight a horde army or essentially any army with models t4 and below. Takes a bit of luck, but killing a squad of scatbikes with nothing but a heavy flamer was pretty satisfying.

kommandoz are a little weak. however they are not useless. they are the classic 40k unit that sacrifices hitting power for the option to infiltrate - in essence trading killing power for flexibility.

some anons have said they are fairly paltry in CC and shooting, and that is true, but their primary opponents are going to be backline units that have even less of a chance of defending themselves in combat than the kommandoz do, heavy weapons teams, tanks with AV 10 rears, etc.

actually using infiltrate to infiltrate them is situational - I personally outflank my kommandoz, preferably with snikrot so they can choose which board edge they come on. this also makes them good for applying pressure in unexpected places, and perhaps opening up late game objective grabs in places the opponent may not be able to muster up the force to kill them.

they will not clear units off the board unless they are pathetically undefended, but that's the point of kommandoz, they're the needle you stick in someone's eye, not the sledgehammer you bash their head with.

Daemonettes are pretty fast and will tear throught most things in the 3-4 toughness/10-12 rear armour range due to their mass of attacks and rending. They're not unlikely to hit home turn two, and most likely will have found something to charge on 3, and they get 5++ and come at 9 points a pop, they also almost aways strike first, and you can summon more of them.

I want to start with CSM, either Alpha Legion or Death Guard, so infantry heavy. Trying to come up with a 1k points list, please r8.
This would let me start with start collecting Chaos, 1 Rhino squad (have to get the second Rhino somewhere else), and a box of Terminators, Raptors and Havocs.
Longterm plan would be to add enough to have a Death Guard or Alpha Legion detachment (infiltration sounds really awesome).

Haven't played since 3rd ed, I remember there were Havocs which had the shouldered autocannons, is there a way to still get them? Not a fan of the way the current Havocs are holding them.

Double reaper cannons is better on a hellbrute if you want to make it shooty.

I've got a bunch of Admech / Skitarii models to build and I was wondering how I should go about equipping them.

I've got:

Tech Priest Dominus (already built with eradication ray and macrostubber)
One box of robots (I think I like the look better with powerfists and to be honest, I'm not sure how the luminagen rule works so I'm kind of reluctant to take phosphor weapons anyway)
Two boxes of the basic skitarii dudes, built four of them as rangers with basic rifles already. It seems like most of the upgrades are pretty poor value for these guys, so I'm considering having no special weapons, etc. Not sure how to distinguish the ranger alpha if he has the same weapons as the others; the vanguard one has a cool helmet. Maybe the head from the ruststalker leader would fit on a ranger body?
Two boxes of sicarians. Both types look cool to me, but I seem to remember people saying one was much better than the other. I'm inclined to build them all as infiltrators with power swords and stubcarbines, because I really dig the stubcarbines and that neurostatic aura is kind of nice. No grenades seems like an issue for an assault unit though.
Three ironstriders / dragoons. I think I like the look of the dragoons better, but I might also want to qualify for that formation which gives them outflank, which I can do with two dragoons and one ironstrider, right?

For a Land Raider and two extra Terminators, plus the suite of upgrades (including mandatory MoN on everything), you can comfortably hit 1500pts. 1000 is a bit hard to squeeze a Chaos Warband into.

a few tips from a fellow ad mech player-
1) rangers are trash compared to vanguard. I have one unit of 5 for the two (excellent) sniper rifles, the rest of my troops are kitted out as vanguard. Sicarian head will definitely not fit on a ranger. I just trimmed his robe in gold to show that he's the boss.
2) the special weapons are all nice, only put the snipers on rangers though. the rad carbines are fantastic though. a unit of 10 vanguard causes total carnage. Plasma calivers are expensive but very much worth it.
3) Onagers with neutron lasers are amazing killing machines. s10 ap1 blast is hard to beat.
4) sicarians are meh, I have only used the infiltrators with taser goads( for extra wounds). sometimes they earn their points sometimes they all die before getting in cc.
5) Melee dragoons are very good if they can survive long enough to get up the board. ironstriders and shooty dragoons are meh. you can run the formation with only 3 units, yes.

If your big on infantry, go whole hog and grab the emp's shield company. Run it with the psykana division auxilery and give each infantry squad heavy weapons.

Remove AP, either do fantasy save reduction or AoS save modifiers. I'd do reduction for armour and modifiers for invulns.
Fix flyers. Why the fuck do they keep making them more and more complex. Literally nobody in my meta uses flyers because we can't be bothered with the rules.
Movement stat. It just makes sense, and adds more depth and flavor to the factions.

Anyone here have a Glaive tank? Looking at main weapons to count as the railguns for my Mechanicum Manta, and I found that Chinaman sells just the Glaive turret, which works well. Does the turret come as one large part, or are the gun and/or capacitors separate? Would like to not have to hack the Volkite Carronades free from the dome turret, would be nice to use it as part of a bunker or something.

Finding suitable long-barrelled burst cannon parts is proving a little tricky. Either going to use Necron Gauss blasters since they look cool or 32 heavy bolters, which would be a pain to get my hands on. Are Tau, Cron or Marine players likely to have any of those spare?

Biggest thing I can see is that it wouldn't prevent taking a Riptide wing in a 1000 point game, but that's more of a problem with Riptides.

Really, the only way to fix that though is to dial back the giant unit spam as a whole. There's no reason for armies consisting almost entirely only of Riptides or knights to be possible under the rules.

Adding on to >>52272788 I think there's an easy solution.

First is to increase the cost of Riptides. Extra 20 points baseline and an extra 20 on the Ion accelerator. That puts a Riptide with Ion and atoms above the cutoff, so one will be easier to manage in a smaller game like that.

The second thing is to classify some units as a 'relic' type. This won't be only ancient things, but rather anything rare enough(and powerful enough) to justify limiting it. For every 1000 points, you could have one such relic model/unit. For Tau, this would apply to all of their larger battlesuits, meaning you get 2 Riptides at 2000 points max.

Potentially, there could be an HQ or unit for each army that allowed you an extra one in larger point games. Say, an Ethereal for Tau to get that third Riptide at 2000.

That would solve a lot of the massive model spam you see.

Pretty much. I would also say there should be a restriction on upgrades for certain ways to make models troops. For example, Eldar Windriders as they are should really be Elites or Fast attack and have a smaller max squad size, and then could be taken at the current max by having a jetbike warlord, but with no special weapons.

A similar thing would apply to crisis suit troops. Have the elites be the small teams that can get a bunch of special weapons, and have the troop versions get more numbers, but be stuck with the weaker guns.

I'm totally fine with FoC slot changing being a thing for fluff reasons, but there should be limits in place so that the units behave more like troops and make you want the standard versions in the same list, rather tha, just being an easy way to spam special weapons.

A white scars army is fine having bike blobs with bolters as its troops. Save the grav for fast attack.

We don't know, we haven't seen the datasheet for the flamer squad yet. However, the BoP datasheet had them at 17ppm for a Sister with a flamer, so 85 a squad (a bolter squad was and is 75) and their Rhino is 45. 130 points nets you five flamers in a barebones Rhino.

Free upgrade replacing the bolter in BoP. Looks pretty cheap in the updated codex but I can't make out the cost of the squad and the ppm is cropped out. In the old datasheet they were S+1 AP2 Two-Handed, comboing quite nicely with the Sisters' I5 A2 each.

I run tooled up squads for Straken and Bullgryn. I also put power axes on my sergeants and I like to have Inquisitors and Primaris Psykers with force axes.

I try to split my chaff as much as possible, lets you tie down as many units as possible and if an enemy unit is capable of putting out 10+ wounds they can't kill more than 10 at a time. I /do/ switch out the warrior's cannon for maw claws if the enemy has small unit sizes, but the cannon has helped a ton with removing pathfinder squads and such.

Sure the Guard player was bad and kept using monster hunter instead of ignore cover, but man, Matt still uploaded that video like it was acceptable.

I play casual Daemons of Tzeentch. That aura makes it so my only RANGED attacks are Exalted Flamers and Flamers. Where Flamers can only hurt the Rhino's Rear and Exalted is 18".

Sure my Screamers can fly in... but they're not I5 so the Sisters punch them first with swords, burn them with Flamerwatch. Leaving Boltgun Sisters as their best choice. Flickering Fire can't target any of them.

I mean odds of running into a pure SOS spam is slim, but damn, it hurts me more than most cheeselists.

It's not a guarantee, but as long as you don't miss five meltas into the rear armor of a tank of your choosing will do usually some serious damage. I've killed Knights with it before.

Just make sure your opponent can't claim a save against them, or they can live through it more often than you'd like.

Next turn, your squad either melt or kicks around the the backfield, picking off targets of opportunity with Sternguard ammo.

If you dont have first turn, hide your fucking models out of line of sight, he can boost his ballistic skill to crazy levels for a turn or two, and has cheap wargear that gives negative modifiers to your cover.

When you reach melee, overwhelm a single squad at a time, since he can also boost his weapon skill. He's a weak humie, so he won't hit hard, but it'll make some annoying tarpits, so make sure you have enough greenskins hammering down on them to take them out in a round of combat.
