if you have a printer you just have to do a little math and you can print your own labels.
>>
>>51076687
Oh yeah and the point I forgot to make was that you can just invert the colors to white text on black ground and just glue and varnish it, so it blends seamlessly into the base or print it on decal paper so you can just transfer the name.
Because I'm completely nuts I even considered setting up a document and sending if off to be brass etched, but I decided that was a little too much even for me.

Put the idea to do some etching of my own at home into my head though.

Orc Shaman that's seen some amazing shit, maybe he's seen the future where Slaanesh grants penis fingers to Chaos Marines
>>
>>51077943
I spray bombed the whole thing and then got a little carried away adding shit. Then I snapped some stuff off because I didn't like the layout and rearranged a bit. 2 steps forward, 1 step back. Pretty sure I'm done adding major things. Figure I'll just slap some more paint on it and maybe add a few small bits. I'd like to find a decent medium to glue down on the base, but I may forego it due to laziness.
>>
>>51077294
Historicals need a bit of shading too you know. And that mold line along the arm, gotterdämmerung!

>>51078054
Get some Tamiya Extra Thin as well. I jump back and forth between that and Rveell contacta professional depending on what exactly I'm gluing.
>>
>>51077294
Considering that this guy is what, 3-4 times the size of what many other people are doing, I'm not impressed at all.

Very few highlights, very little shading, and it looks like the paint has failed to stick on the pouch and holster- you did prime him, right?

The mud on his coat is cool, but I'm sure you can do better than this.
>>
>>51078432
Please tell me that's grey primer.
>>
>>51078771

The dude that's won 3 Slayer Swords and multiple other Golden Daemons doesn't bother with Primer either.
>>
>>51078794
He can probably polish a turd to a mirror shine as well without much effort. For us mere mortals, primers tend to be a good idea.
>>
>>51078837
>>51078794
Some use paint-on primer, you mix in shit or tone it for textures and lighting effects.
>>
>>51078756
No, i had not primed him.
I did not think i would need it, since the model was bigger than usual.
But i know that now, if i ever do another.

I gave more or less up on the shading and highlights because i didn't want to mess him up more than i already had
>>
Would /wip/ call this an accurate assessment of Dangles paint theme?

Main colours
>forest green, black joints
>Deathwing has bone armor
>Ravenwing has black armor, sometimes steel joints

Secondary colours
>crests and livery are back with white, bone, red, or a patterned combination

Decorations
-Swords
>if symbolic, white. If meant to represent a sword in a picture or carving, steel
-Skulls
>if symbolic, bone. If decorative, gold
-Wings
>Painted either white or bone. Ravenwing is always white.
-Crests
>Painted gold, unless it incorporates an above icon, in which case it is painted accordingly.

Robes
>Bone with red lining. The Deathwing wears forest green robes with black lining.

Apothecaries/Techmarines do not alter their paint scheme and wear standard white/red armor, the chapter pauldron is on the right shoulder, with the Apothecarion/AdMech icon taking the left.
>>
>>51079012

I guess? Any number of GW paint schemes / tutorials will confirm for you
>>
>>51078931
Primer isn't about size, it's about the surface. People use primer when painting cars, houses and ships. As in the real world stuff, not models.
>>
>>51079246
Oh, well god dammit
Now i at least know that.
Well im gonna prime the next miniature (if i ever do one) as the first thing.

I do believe it's a bit late to prime that one
>>
>>51078794
Then come back and tell us what to do once you've won one GD.
>>
>>51079394

There's no need to be upset. Some people don't paint with primer as they feel it's unnecessary.

These people general don't handle their models as they're usually display pieces as opposed to play pieces.

Cunt doesn't have to be your default mode, fella.

Chimeras, WIP and well on their way. I hated the lasguns poking out so I chopped them off to make them look like struts or whatever.

I haven't finished the Russ yet but the two unopened boxes were bugging me and now I can production line the next steps which are
Metallics, Varnish, Rust pigments.

Also I need to do the viewing lenses around the turret areas.

What would contract the Grey and khaki well? Red? Green? Blue?
>>
>>51080327

I'd say red or blue, preferring red since the yellow looks fairly warm (though that may just be your lighting)
>>
>>51080357

I think I forgot to auto the warm/cold setting as I was taking other pictures earlier. The yellow is slightly warmer than it is in reality.

I'm thinking Red might be a good offset as well
>>
>>51078794
>>51079428

They don't use primer because they don't touch their models after they're done. They're display pieces. They don't even have a proper gaming base, they're usually on dioramas or plinths. They don't seal in their weathering dust either, if you touch it your fingers will be covered in weathering Cheeto dust and you'll fuck up the model.

If you play with your models you NEED primer, varnish, and powder sealer. Telling a gamer not to use primer is shitty advice.
>>

I just tell myself that i've spent a small fortune on model soldiers and not painting them as well as I can is a waste of time and money.
>>
>>51081034
once i put them on display I look at them and if theyre not the best i can do, i think "i could have done better, and i didnt"

that, and i figure spend all your time painting to your best is the only way to improve, if you fall into a rut and just batchpaint low quality you dont improve

>>
Hey /wip/, what would you say is the lowest temp one should be spraying minis with primer outside. I've blutacked my models and I'm ready to prime them but I'm worried about how cold it is outside.

Also, if my Skitarii primary color for their robes is Thunderhawk blue and the metallics are silver, what color should be secondary/inner? I'm going for a rain inspired color scheme.

Fresh off the boat, from reddit, kid? heh I remember when I was just like you. Braindead. Lemme give you a tip so you can make it in this cyber sanctuary: never make jokes like that. You got no reputation here, you got no name, you got jackshit here. It's survival of the fittest and you ain't gonna survive long on 4chan by saying stupid jokes that your little hugbox cuntsucking reddit friends would upboat. None of that here. You don't upboat. You don't downboat. This ain't reddit, kid. This is 4chan. We have REAL intellectual discussion, something I don't think you're all that familiar with. You don't like it, you can hit the bricks on over to imgur, you daily show watching son of a bitch. I hope you don't tho. I hope you stay here and learn our ways. Things are different here, unlike any other place that the light of internet pop culture reaches. You can be anything here. Me ? heh, I'm a judge.. this place.... this place has a lot to offer... heh you'll see, kid . . . that is if you can handle it...

I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

Alright /tg/, gonna be jumping back into 40k after a 10+ absense from it, figured I'd start with Adeptus Mechanicus since they finally have a proper army now so I grabbed the Start Collecting box. Any tips I should know going into it? I already know the basics like painting the Ranger's arms/rifle separate from the rest of the body and building/painting the Dune Crawler in separate leg/turret sections.
>>
>>51083619
keep the capes separate too so you can paint the interiors unhindered.
>>
>>51083619
Unless you really, REALLY (and I mean REALLY) want Move through Cover, don't make them Rangers but Vanguard instead, for starters. They're cheaper, have more flexible weapons, work better with 2/3 of their special weapons (with the last one being bad anyway) and have a better Special Rule.

Magnetizing your Dune Crawler is also pretty awesome to do, since being able to swap its weapon is pretty damn good on a unit as versatile as the Crawler is. It's pretty easy to do, only somewhat difficult part is the Icarus Array.

looks solid man. after you varnish it you might try putting some of GW's Nurgle's Rot technical paint in a few areas to give it mucus-y details, and use it to make some pools on the base. some green glaze like Waywatcher in some areas might be cool too but gotta watch out and blend it well or glaze can turn shit real fast.

the running 'four armies' thing in white dwarf has a nurgle army themed around blue and yellow, with blue skin tones and bright yellow boils. it looks pretty striking.

I don't want to go into too much more detail until it's resolved, but basically I handmade some gifts for my SS recipient, sent them to him. He posted in the thread that he got it, included pictures of what I sent including the note, we discussed what he got and I gave him a rundown of how to use his gift. This was the Tuesday after Christmas. I got an email yesterday saying that the organizer got a complaint that my anon did not receive a gift. Hopefully things get worked out, but I'm pretty frustrated. I hope that I don't get banned from participating again because of one greedy jerk.

Figure this is the best thread to ask for opinions in.
I recently acquired a Ryushi patrol fleet box for Firestorm Armada, and when I cracked it this weekend to prep for painting I started getting disappointed. While the level of detail is great as per Spartan's usual, it's probably the worst box I've ever gotten from them in terms of casting quality. Bad mold slippage, lots of gunk resin obliterating detail, and weird areas of 'fuzzy' resin in the deeper undercuts. I've marked them in the image here- orange for slippage, purple for gunk, blue for fuzz. Now the fuzz I'm given to understand is an unavoidable consequence of the way these casts are done, and I've experienced the other issues with Spartan models before, but not usually this bad and not usually all on one model before. They've always been great about providing replacement parts before, but this is to the point where I almost want to replace the whole box- there's one cruiser out of four that I think is workable, but the one-piece metal-cast corvettes are all really blobby (Spartan's not the best with metal) and in places I can't tell what's flash and what's part of the model. I kind of feel like I'm being too nitpicky, though, and I hate to ask for what would be almost a whole new box. Can you guys think of any way of fixing some of this stuff?
>>
>>51086126

use a seam scraper and some milliput or maybe liquid green stuff

you can also use files, but you need a respirator. Resin dust is really horrible for you.
>>
>>51086319
For sure I wear a respirator with particulate filters whenever I do resin work. The big problem I'm having with these pieces is that I can't get in to a lot of the bad spots with my metal files without removing a lot of the detail around them thanks to all the undercuts and overhangs.
>>
>>51086379
then use a knife or a seam scraper

GW's seam scraper is actually surprisingly good, much heavier duty than I expected. They do charge a premium for it though. The construction is a roughly 1mm thick full tang "blade" with a metal handle bolted together.

I'm seeing a lot of talk about resin and respirators and I'm a bit concerned. I want to get into 40k but don't want to spend too much on equipment (yet) to test the waters and if I enjoy building/painting. I'm hoping that I don't need a clean room, right? What do you all mean by "respirator"? Those fancy $100+ full face things, or will a simple 5-pack of those mouth/nose things from Home Depot will do?

You're going to need a respirator regardless, either for spray priming or airbrushing so it doesn't matter.

Disposable cheap masks work for resin particles but they don't for aerosol spray.

Yea, but you're no GD winner. Don't get me wrong, you have a solid model going on, but using a primer is good for several reasons.

1- You can alternate the colors you will use. Make the model appear darker, or brighter depending on the primer color. You can even get a grey primer if thats the color you want to paint.
2- It makes the paint stick! This is the main reason you use it. See your models as an investment. To do a good pre-work, such as removing mold lines, clean of blisters, fixing gaps and eventually prime it, is all part of what will make this model stand the test of time. Just the same as the after work consists of a coat or two of a seal/varnish. All to save the time and effort you put in to your models, so it will keep your work alive for a very long time. So even if you just have them in a display case to look at, chances are some douche or spoiled child might touch it once or twice and ruin the work you put in to it.

So, to give advice NOT to use a primer is a bullshit move. And to quote great painters as a form of inspiration is even worse, unless you actually are one of those great painters yourself.

So do yourself a favor, try not being a cheapskate (because we all know this is your true motivation for not using a primer) and get a grey primer instead.

Oh, and regarding your model, you need to remove a bit of flash from the skulls. And I really like how the face is turning out, great job so far (despite your shitty primer advice).
>>
>>51087197

>The guy taking everything to serious

Are you for real? You seriously think you need a respirator when using acrylic paints for an airbrush? And don't tell me you're a retard that can-prime models inside, with a mask on?!? Do that shit outside, and save you the trouble of wearing a fucking mask (and looking like a fucking retard to boot).

>>51087051

Dude, just work in a well ventilated area, hell, even outside will work. And as >>51087083
says, just don't sniff the shit you work with and you will be alright.
>>
>>51087433

I said that and I'm not the guy who painted the Orc Shaman. Leave the poor dude alone.

I just said some people don't use primer and in a later post said the people that do not use primer do not use models to play with.

I never advised anyone anywhere not to paint with primer. The fact that 99.99% of tutorials advise using primer is probably a good indicator for the fact that a wargamer generally should.
>>

>>
>>51078432
IDK, I beg to differ from what everyone else is saying, if it works for you, it works for you. That is a very very clean paintjob, but how on earth did you make the paint stick? If so, how on earth did you make it so smooth? Painting on raw plastic tends to pool the paint, so either you're a photoshop wizard, or you have some other technique.
>>
>>51086024

>>
>>51088039
Because White Scars is a shit paint.

>>
>>51088039

Pale or white paints generally die first due to pigment density vs thinner.

White scar is bad for it so is celestra grey.

It also happens to my non citadel pale paints but not as much.

I use Vallejo Air(brush) white for my general white work as its prethinned and doesnt suffer the same fate. I realise I don't get quite as much but its fine.

You should still be careful.

Back when I built my carpark Guard army (about 25 plastic tanks over like a week iirc) I was just building them in my study (which is not a small room, fits 2 computer desks and a couple bookshelves).

But just the sheer weight of plastic glue I was chunring through and had in that room I managed to burn my lungs pretty bad. I had breath issues and constant chest infections for about a year afterwards.

Don't underestimate how badly plastic glue can fuck you up if you aren't thinking.

These days if I need to build a stack of big plastic models I will turn the fans on first.

Dunkelgrau. Feldgrau is the greyish green they used for uniforms.

Dunkelgrau was applied in factory, but it's the colour they used in the field in the early war, they didn't repaint them in the field. It supposedly blended in pretty well with Poland and France.

Then they got to the desert and everyone stood out like a sore thumb, so you started seeing more or less improvised camouflages painted on.

Eventually they switched over to dunkelgelb as the factory standard, and on from there.
>>
>>51088619
They'll need stuff to tie them together. The same bases and some shared colours.

you need to blend in some of the greenstuff with the plastic, so it looks like it's flowing with the model and actually coming out of it, instead of being plastered upon it when painted.
I also see some finger-print markings on some teeth, get some water if not cured and gently get that away. if already cured, carefully file it down.

other than that, I like it a lot!

The drawing looks like the colour is lighter where the light is hitting it, not just in the middle of each carapace element. You've just done it in the middle. Your contrast needs to be higher to look like a bug really, going all the way up to white, reflecting the light.

I'll try to add some extreme white lighting in some point to see how it works. The progression from black to red and orange seems the natural color of the carapace, and not something light related...
I'll try not to gloss at the moment, the kabuto carapace do not seems that reflective, but I,la give it a try later.
What about the rest of the body? It is black, but I am unsure how to proceed. Maybe some extreme highlights to be yellow-ish?

Depends on the model.

As default, build first.

Sometimes there are parts you can't reach to paint after assembly. So you don't assemble enough to block those. But sometimes those bits can't be seen anyway, so fuck it.

The real party is when you have a quite visible but un-reachable area, blocked by a large part that'll require a good bit of gap-filling and sanding when you glue it in place. Assemble, paint, assemble, paint...

Going OK, going to be stuck at my desk working for the next couple hours, but at least I got my 10 Sicarians, Dragoon and Knight's base primed and the Knight sprayed Leadbelcher while it was light so I can start work on them.

Other Dragoon needs some modifications first, though. It got a bit damaged, so I'm taking the opportunity to convert it a bit rather than a repair job. Nice to have them look a bit different.

>Hung up with what head would look best on my BA Sergeant. Box shows him with the head on the far right but I am stuck between that or maybe on of the helm with the laurels. I also quite like the bare face I have on the right.

I absolutely can't stand the fanged bare heads. The Death Company heads are more handsome, but several of them are sculpted to look deranged, as would befit someone overtaken by the Black Rage. The biggest disappointment to me, though, is the head that comes with the Blood Angels upgrade sprue. It's just all-around unattractive to me (like he's wearing a dead hedgehog as a wig), and it's supposed to be our "special" head.

The head of the plastic Sanguinary Priest model looks nice, and if you have one and are planning to fit him with a mighty helmet, then that frees up the head for use on another model.

>Also would it be better if I gave him a hand flamer or combi-flamer? This squad is gonna be a flamer heavy squad.

Either a combi-flamer or *two* hand flamers. The former will give you one big shot at S4. Depending on who you're facing, this may be all you get before your squad gets obliterated by return fire. OTOH, twin hand flamers essentially allows you to score double the number of hits, as many times as you're able to shoot, but at S3. Additionally, the sergeant will get +1A for having a second hand weapon (two pistols).

Here's this one. I also got a lot of good ideas from da clevva ladz at Hirst Arts:

>and? which one of you snapped up brother craig/johnny on ebay??

It wouldn't be me. I saw one there a while back that was poorly painted but with free shipping for $19.00, and it was gone within 48 hours of my posting it here. Haven't seen Noble Knight Games repost their lot of ten marines that included one. They were selling it for $65.00... maybe someone finally bought it.

Atomized acrylic paints found to be between 4-35µm from spray painting http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/15298668691389964?journalCode=aiha20 (industrial but nobody studies miniatures airbrushing conditions).

So that's in the range of ash, cement dust, regular dust, spores and pollen. So let's take a look at some articles about the dangers of particulates in that range /because they are that small/.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3640939/

http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/web/portlandcement.pdf

http://www.hcdoes.org/airquality/monitoring/pm.htm

http://www.greenfacts.org/en/particulate-matter-pm/level-3/02-health-effects.htm#1p1

Now I'm not saying that you need a hazmat suit to paint with an airbrush, but taking precautions for your own health just makes sense.
Over the long term you will be increasing your risk of cancer and other health problems if you don't ventilate properly and use a respirator, in the same way that you increase your risk if you're overweight, drink or smoke.

Hobby isn't as intense as industry, but you also aren't risk assessed to the same degree because there's no way that airbrushing companies are going to take the flak for this if you give yourself bronchitis (as companies would if Little Timmy died from drinking paint sold to him by dear old GW.)

Take responsibility for your own health.

I've heard people do commissions and such for painted armies or individual figures, but it is something I could reasonably have some sort of income from or is it generally a one-off from people who have spare cash?

Possibly add some tzeenchian parts to Celestine and do blue highlights on the wings, swap the head for a bird and that's a pretty nice Daemon Prince of Tzeench.

Inquisitor I have no idea, really.

Personally I'm getting Cawl and using his bottom half as my Anacharis Scoria's walking body. Going to magnetize him just above the hips, have a walking body, an Abeyant body made from a Canoptek Spyder with a few Admech modifications, and a command platform that has him wired into the back of a Stormlord with monitors and weapons, the whole thing made more DarkMech, obviously.

Two good brushes, one general use and one detail, will cover most things. Maybe a somewhat bigger one as well for basing and such. Even bigger if you're painting vehicles. Then as these wear out you have them become your drybrushing brushes.

Exact sizes vary, with cheap synthetics (which I'm often surprisingly find of) your standard brush might be a #00. Then you switch over to expensive sable and find that a #1 fits better, with the #00 being your fine detail brush instead.

But anyway, start with three brushes I'd say, add more as needed.

I know i'll get shit on for thinking my painting is worth money to see, but if i can pull in five or ten bucks a month i'll be happy.
