Almost done! Just need to do some milliput fixings on the chestpiece and armpits to cover the plastic and repose the legs after I figure out a good pose.

I need feedback on the shoulderpads. Are they symmetrical? Proportional? I'll paint the Fire Caste badge on them.

The right shoulder plate looks a bit more forward than the left, but that could be positioning and perspective.
I'd say maybe make them longer? But either way, good job anon

They're not mold lines, they're just were the halves join but of course, plenty of cleaning left to do! Drilling those barrels too, momma raised me right.

>>50992109
yeah I see it, thank you. The way the right arm is posed interferes with the shoulderpad a bit. They reach from shoulder to elbow, but on the right arm, there's not enough shoulder so it clips into the backpiece making it look unrealistic which bugs the shit out of me.

I appreciate it, thank you!

If you defend your shitty washed finish once more I will treat everything you post as bait.

If you have come back and want to learn, accept what everyone has told you.

Well-painted dirt doesn't look like that.
Real dirt doesn't look like that.

It is a finish on the models that looks like garbage and that is why everyone tells you this. It says "I am either incompetent or lazy" at a single glance to everyone who sees your models.
>>
>>50992958
>That dude on the left
>Oh fuck, that flamer is pretty powerful!
>>
>>50992929

It's like upper tier tabletop quality. He paints them very well, everything's neat and clean and good enough for box art, but it's not something that would place in a serious painting competition.
>>
>>50992929
It's A+ execution of the upper end of tabletop. Tabletop quality covers a multitude of sins, and on the other end people field things that they paint for local or low-tier competitions.

The lack of advanced techniques is what makes me say that it can't be taken as display or show quality.

>>
>>50993130
It may also be because GW has their "official" painting method (base, wash, highlight) that they try to use for almost everything. Most of Duncan's videos fall into this.

You'll never see him use an airbrush unless GW comes out with an official airbrush (spray gun not withstanding).
>>
>>50993326
You're correct. A lot of it is just experience and practice. Once you get brush control and paint-to-thinner ratios down, the rest is much easier.

Anybody know of Not!Sisters of Battle plastic heads?

Buy some second hand models for cheap on ebay. Use Super Clean bought from Walmart etc. and soak the poorly painted models for about a day and a half in tupperwear. After soaking scrub the paint off with the a shitty toothbrush, drop in tupperware filled with warm soapy water and then scrub and rinse when the paint's removed. At that point when dry you can prime and paint. Make sure you use gloves while working with this stuff, it's HIGHLY corrosive and will kill the oils in your hands and prune your shit the fuck up
>>
>>50995201
how do you get to the point where you can drop like four thousand dollars on a pair of models but not have the eighty bucks, or space enough, to get a desk to put them on?

>Is it just he has exceptionally steady hands and is extremely neat with his brushwork?

That's exactly it. He's been painting for years and this stuff is second nature to him.
It's good to try to emulate his techniques, even to try to copy him exactly, but just know that you're not gonna nail it first, second, third, or even fourth try. Don't let it discourage you. The more you paint, the more your muscle memory will build up.

Muscle memory is important. Look at guitar players. They play a song enough, eventually they can do it with their eyes closed because their hands and fingers know exactly where they need to be and what they need to do there.

Takes time to build that up, but you'll get there.

Sadly only corrosive liquids like Simple Green, Fairy Power (UK) and one or so more in the UK are safe for plastic and resins. You can use pure alcohol to strip only metal and it'd take a bit less time than the others.

He's talking about the UK.
Go to Walmart, get Super Clean or go to your local hardware store or Home Depot/Lowes and pick up some concentrated strength Simple Green.
I really hope you're deciding on getting second hand models, it's a humongous expense to get boxes of new minis to realize you hate painting them or play them and don't like how they play. Then you'd be the one listing your second hand minis hoping someone will make the choice you have to make starting the hobby

It's £. I don't know how student loans work in america but they're reasonable here. You only pay a small amount back based on your income. If I were earning 30k a year I'd be paying back £67 a month and you only start to repay when you're earning more than £404 a week. If I was earning 22k it'd be £7.

>>
>>50995201
For that much money, you would think they could bother doing quality control on the model before they ship it to you. If I had to do that kind of filling/sanding on a model before I could even safely assemble it for that much money, I would be pissed off.
>>
>>50995759
Just a few tips, first and foremost given your friend has experience he won't allow you to use shitty brushes I hope. I'm not saying it's necessary but you should learn how to make a wet palette. The worst thing about painting is it takes time. Acrylic paint dries INCREDIBLY fast, especially GW Citadel paints. It's plastic essentially so an improvision is taking tupperwear, fill about a quarter inch of water and place a sponge with a paper tower on it. Normally you would need to drop paint onto a palette, dab some water on it, mix and race against the clock. This isn't the case with a wet palette. From the start it'll save you alot of paint and time.
When painting a group of models it's best to do one color section of the model at a time. Say you're painting red space marines. You're going to need to do alot of painting in red, right? You get everything red done on your models one after another. This benefits you in multiple ways. Through the unit you get better at painting that section and color, it saves you alot of dried left over paint that you'd waste not doing this and it also increases productivity.
If you're deciding on doing red space marines it'd be a good idea to try out some colored primers. Bought from a hardware store, only some FLAT PRIMERS are acceptable. Most notably Painter's Touch 2x Cover in my experience. Retailers like Army Painter and even GW does their own colored primers. It's a (relatively) cheaper but less cost effective way if you intend to do a variety of miniatures than buying yourself a compressor and an airbrush.

I could go on and on but really the best aid is visual. Go on youtube and get a good idea of the step by step process.
>>
>>50995907
It's forgeworld, who do you think they are? Chinaman?
>>
>>50995907

Believe it or not the warhounds are worse, the warlord is a much nicer model to build and with far less issues all around, there's no missing detail. I'm mostly filling in various mall gaps at the joins or covering up pins, the only real area of issue is the upper carapace which as you can see doesnt fit properly, so im going to build it up
>>
>>50995997

I admire your dedication, I just feel like you got unfairly cheated.
>>
>>50996038

I'm not too bothered about it, I find it relaxing to make it seamless - as long as there's no detail missing such as an assload of rivets I don't mind having to work on it and it gives me something to do while the epoxy dries. That warhound had so many issues fw have sent me an entire replacement. FW products generally always require a decent amount of cleanup, but their customer service is stellar.
>>
>>50995969
I've already got a compressor, is there a way I could jury rig an airbrush? Or are the cheap ones good enough to not worry about it?
>>
>>50996331
There's nothing to jury rig; if you're talking about using a shop compresser, you just need an appropriate hose adapter.
>>
>>50996469
That's the thing, I don't know what adapter it needs - I don't have one that has anything that looks like it takes paint bottles, and all the airbrushes I've seen at my LGS are in the 100+ range, with no compressor.
>>
I'm getting into 40k and I've got some Guardsmen all primed and ready to go, but my biggest problem right now is trying to figure out a colour scheme. I'm colourblind, so trying to pick out colours, shades, and what looks good together is proving to be a huge challenge.

I was hoping to go for a wehrmacht or starship troopers sort of colour scheme (I'm into gray/black/white), but I'm starting to think it won't really "pop," and instead look bland.

Any suggestions? I'm using citadel paints.

in addition to the other options mentioned the WHFB chaos warriors have a helmet in their box with a skull faceplate. You can probably bitsorder that.
Or bitsorder one of the other khorne heads with a skull faceplate.

you'll want a purple Candy Coat, I would have gone with a brighter silver personally, but it should work.
Ideally you'll want a base that's as reflective as humanly possible (think Vallejo Metal Colour Aluminium or Chrome)

As for what to use... You'll want a transparent purple.
Now most actual Candy paints are designed for automotive work and as such are toxic as all hell.

Createx offers a good number of options, and I think these are water based.
Auto-Air 4247 is a Transparent Purple (http://www.autoaircolors.com/paints/4247.html)
Auto-Air 4659 is a Candy Deep Purple (http://www.autoaircolors.com/custom-candy-colors/4659.html)

You'll find that making stuff like those shin pads is remarkably easy actually! All you need to do is make a cast of the surface of an object like that face using a piece of terrain or what have you. I forget what the product is but it's a clear strip that has to be sectioned and heated up in hot water. With the mould you can spritz it with mould release (or water if it works but I doubt it) and pack it full of greenstuff that has a ratio of more blue than yellow. Let it harden for a bit, pop it out and apply it to whatever surface you want. It's a really easy way to pimp out transport doors as well.

The product you're referring to is called Oyumaru, also sold rebranded as Instant Mold. It's very easy to use, like you say.

Sculpts are okay, some are really good, namely the not-greedos, the admiral-ackbar sniper hero rebel and the HK droids, but some are pretty bland and uninteresting.

The casting leaves much to be desired. A LOT of mold line, some that I just couldn't be bothered cleaning in very annoying spots, as well.

I make no effort for these to be excellently painted minis, either. Buddy expects them to be finished in a matter of days, and doesn't care for level of painting except that there's paint on the mini and it's a tabletop quality, which I can give him in such a short notice.

If I'd been getting paid more than fifty cents per small based mini (almost 20 minis for 50 bucks from the first lot) then I'd be inclined to get more materials, but as it is I'm getting paid chips so that's what he gets, which he's more than happy to get.

Although some minis like the Greedo's and the Ackbar sniper I'm taking my time on. They're really good models and they deserve a bit of love.

you need to add visual interest via painting.
Easy ways to do that are using sponges for chipped paint, streaks of oil and dirt or adding stuff like hazard striped and chevrons or warning labels.
And you got some panel lines in those buildings use a different color to pick those out for the frames of the doors, windows and whatnot.
>>
>>50996765

It's severe R/G, to the point where traffic lights (red/amber/green) look the same to me and I only know when to stop based on where the light is lit up (red top, amber middle, green bottom), rather than what colour it is.
>>
>>50996713
>but I'm starting to think it won't really "pop," and instead look bland.
That really depends.

I mean an army of Stormtroopers is gonna look impressive just by virtue of uniformity.
Then put the towering shape of Darth Vader in the middle an it gets interesting.
As soon as he switches on the red blade your entire attention if focused on him.

What I'm getting at here is it's not so much about the individual models, than it is about the army as a whole and setting an accent here and there.
A starship troopers army would look pretty dope imo.

>>
>>51002550
Prime gray, not white. Paint as a light grey and highlight with white. White is an interesting color because if you want a stormtrooper look, it's more of a block color with highlights being used on the non-white parts to make the mini pop.

I have the same problem with Vallejo matte. From what I hear it's just not much good at what it's supposed to do, it makes for more of a satin finish (though you need to shake it like buggery to stop all the matting agent pooling at the bottom of the bottle). I'm told AK Ultra Matte or Tamiya Flat Base are good products for a proper matte finish.

Is it okay to prime in low temperatures? I have some new army painter sprays coming in the mail tomorrow, but the temperature is supposed to be about 4 degrees F. The only location I can prime in is a garage. Is this ok? If not, how low is ok?
>>
Could someone check if an ork boyz legs will comfortably straddle a hormagaunts back please fellas
>>
>>51003507
At low temperatures the solvent in the paint won't evaporate as quickly, so make sure you put the models on something that you can pick up (otherwise you'll ruin the primer), after spraying, put them somewhere warm to dry, because it'll stay wet for a while.
>>
>>51003535
Good thinking. I store the cans inside, spray outside, then quickly bring the models in the house to dry at room temp.
>>
>>51002258
Oh hey, I've still got all my kickstarter stuff in a pile somewhere, waiting for the space to assemble and paint it all.

You can have my plans for when i eventually assemble mine, if you want. Prime, then spray with different reds and oranges. Then spray hairspray and sprinkle salt on them, then a coat of an off-white. Then I'd brush them off with a toothbrush and warm water for a realistic chipping effect, and go back in with rust pigments and some washes to add more detail. Finally, do what >>51002394 says, maybe add some graffiti in with stencils or whatever.

Looking forward to seeing the results, I backed for the £250 level so I've got I don't know how many hab blocks to assemble and paint.
>>
>>51003507
Also, put those models to dry somewhere with a little ventilation, that stuff smells quite a bit.
>>
>>51002495
then go for a more kriegish colour scheme. Blue and creme mainly, with some grey. Problem averted with one of the best schemes available.

Assemble the main body and prime, do the weapon arms separately - especially if they block out of other portions of the model. Look up how to pin things too, that'll help stuff stay together

Remember to up your white balance, a white background makes the phone darken the pic otherwise.

Correct colours as well, on phone it's literally pressing a button nowadays and can do wonders.

Finally crop your pictures.

Now onto the model. The execution is solid but I don't see highlights on that skin, making it very flat and dark. And because the plates are about the same colour, it makes for a model that has no focal point, you lose yourself in the sea of sand colours.

So do some highlights pretty much everywhere and it'll be much better. You also missed a spot on the side bits of the shield.

Working on an auxiliary force of 'normal' space marines who are attached to a Thousand Sons warband, and fill tactical, raptor, havoc and other 'standard' chaos marine roles.

Aesthetically, I'm going for a chaotic version of the 30k Thousand sons but without the rubric aesthetic. I've also used lots of baroque, 'mutated' bits to show the tzeentch aesthetic.

Thoughts and ideas?

You could mix in bits from the new sets to tie them in a bit better, maybe a prospero box if you've gotta fill in a pretty big model count but id shy away from mkIII helmets, they really have the "suit of dust" look to me. Also what happened to the shoulder pad, it's got a chunk missing. Looks cool otherwise, hard to go wrong with mkIV.

Which do you prefer when you're building something new: beveled edges, fillet (rounded), or vertical? I know a few people that can't stand anything but vertical bases, but I'm fine with beveled ones. I don't understand the rounded ones, though.

>>51007532
No, the side pips will indicate the objective's number for TOs and the like.

I mean as a way to indicate which mysterious objective result (ie. Skyfire Nexus) was rolled for it.
>>
>>51007730
Okay, I'll take that into account. What kind of die and what size? I assume just a regular D6? The images are based off a 25mm base so I could run into some issues with the sizing, but I'll have to measure it to make sure.

There are only 6 mysterious objective results, so D6. I think people most typically use 12mm dice for the bulk of their rolls. I have some dice that are smaller and some that are larger. Could go 16mm to be safe.
>>
>>51007886
Looking around some more, it seems that the official GW objective markers use 25mm bases but people like 40-60mm, so I think I'll upscale a bit - if I used a 40mm base with exact same scale then a 12mm D6 would fit perfectly, but I feel like it would be too tall.

Will definitely play around with the sizes and get some physical models made and compared.
