I remember when /tg/ wasn't full of degenerates.
Of all the traits of Tolkien's elves, even purely physical, pointy ears were very minor. Given that D&D elves (and by extension, those in much of modern fantasy) are overwhelmingly inspired by Tolkien, how come they of all the others became so completely central to the image? In before some of you faggots who learned all of your mythology from Scion sourcebooks says this: no, there's very little evidence, if at all, that the ancient Norse OR Celts depicted their elves or close equivalents with pointy ears. By all accounts, they mostly just looked like very pretty, occasionally glowing humans.
>>53150716
>Given that D&D elves (and by extension, those in much of modern fantasy) are overwhelmingly inspired by Tolkien
This is not a given at all.
>why is the most distinct and obvious physical trait so completely central to the image?
>>53150716
>Given that D&D elves (and by extension, those in much of modern fantasy) are overwhelmingly inspired by Tolkien
DnD elves were inspired by Sindar and Legolas, and many fantasy settings followed this instead of taking inspiration from Tolkien.

I want to create an explosively self-improving machine intelligence, a singularity AI. And if anyone can get shit done, it's /tg/.
> But AInon, what chance do we have when governments and Google are working on the same thing? We don't have the hardware, the expertise, the time.
No, but we're /tg/! We get things done! Okay, realistically we have only the slightest sliver of a chance, but think of it this way. There are really only three ways we're going to get to superhuman AI:
- Brute force, loads of hardware, we in /tg/ will never be able to compete.
- Uploading human neurons, we're decades away.
- Clever programming.
It's the 3rd where we have our sliver of a chance. No one actually knows what consciousness IS, how emotions work down on a mathematical level, how things like conceptualization or lateral thinking happen. We just have guesswork. The right anons making the right guess might just stumble on something the corporations and militaries miss precisely because we don't know what we're doing.
>>53150680
>The right anons making the right guess might just stumble on something the corporations and militaries miss precisely because we don't know what we're doing.
This implies that the corporations and militaries know what they are doing.
Pardon me for replying to myself, I'm just going to keep fleshing out my ideas.
> So are we doing neural nets, simulated evolution, or what?
No and no. Those are brute force approaches. We don't have the resources to do brute force. Plus other organizations have been mining these approaches for decades; we'll never catch up.
We're going to focus heavily on the RECURSIVE SELF IMPROVEMENT aspect. We're not going to try to teach our AI about the world. There's too many person-decades of efforts just to start in on basics like computer vision, reasoning in 3d, identifying objects, etc etc.
We'll start on the easiest thing for a machine: teach it about its own environment -- about code, runtime environment, RAM, latency & throughput, etc. Teach it to make itself better.
Of course our AI will need goals too.
> What kind of goals?
Dunno, I'm turning that over in my head. Personally I think there should be a lot of them: a simple single goal is a recipe for some runaway "paperclip optimizer" hell scenario; I want an AI that's as complex and messy as us. So I welcome /tg/'s feedback on what the goals should be.
Maybe think of it this way: a sufficiently superintelligent AI might be really damn godlike. What goals would you want from a perfect GM? Maybe /tg/bot will be the GM for reality.
> /tg/bot is a stupid name
I agree. Suggested names wanted!
>>53150680
>Brute force, loads of hardware, we in /tg/ will never be able to compete.
Combined /tg/ probably has more you power than most organizations that are trying, but the fact that you think it will be anything but the third elsewhere shows how little you know on the subject.
When playing a character who has close living relatives (parents, a spouse and/or children), what's the convention within your group in terms of roleplay. Does the player roleplay his character's family, or do you leave it to the DM? Is the DM free to decide everything or is he expected to follow certain guidelines about these characters' personalities when roleplaying them?
>>53149580
> Does the player roleplay his character's family, or do you leave it to the DM?
Yes.
> Is the DM free to decide everything or is he expected to follow certain guidelines about these characters' personalities when roleplaying them?
Yes.
>>53149580
It depends on context and how much control the GM is comfortable exerting. Unfortunately there's not a simple answer.
>>53149580
I think it's fine for the dm to decide how they act, unless the player wanted them to be a specific way. It may be important to their character in that case.

Starter question: Best edition for new players?
Have a pity bump
Can someone summarize this for me? Is it an 80s rpg, or is it a setting for adnd?
During the time of the great crusade, the emperor finds you and realizes you are one of his lost sons, albeit perhaps a lazy one
After some ordeal he gives you command of your own legion whose astartes were sired using your genestock
>describe your talents as a primarch
>what is the name of your legion?
>what are its main tactics/characteristics?
>as a primarch, where do you land on the whole Council of Nikaea issue?
>at the time of the heresy, who do you side with?
>Describe any special friendships/rivalries your legion has with any of the others
>Describe some of your legion's most memorable victories/defeats
>Leman Russ has been told that you and your legion are going to Chaos. Now his fleet is in your home planet's orbit. What do?
>what's the major defect in your chapter's geneseed or traditions?
>what is your signature weapon, vehicle, or other wargear, and why?
>after the Heresy, what is your former Legion's major deviation from the Codex - or what unique gift does your dark god give your Legion, now?
>what blandishments did Horus offer you to try to convince you to join?
>>53129838
Marduk Engur
>describe your talents as a primarch
Fast, assault tactics and multi-pronged attacks. Managing many small groups. A spiritual sort, but not in a particularly ecclesiastical or didactic way like Lorgar. Gets on well with the common folk and his marines. Serves as a personal exemplar, rather than a figurehead idol or distant leader.
>what is the name of your legion?
The Leviathan Host
>what are its main tactics/characteristics?
Air Cav, Breaching, and Void Combat. Oceanic themes, with a mix of near-eastern ancient civilizations like Akkad, Babylon, and Sumeria for cultural flavor as well as some art-deco design.
>as a primarch, where do you land on the whole Council of Nikaea issue?
As a spiritualist, Marduk was frightened of the potential power of sorcery but also respected those who used it. Understood and backed the Emperor's decision but secretly held doubts about the effectiveness of it.
>at the time of the heresy, who do you side with?
Horus, but more Chaos than the traitors.
>Describe any special friendships/rivalries your legion has with any of the others
Close with the Space Wolves because they have similar esoteric beliefs and combat styles, though think they're slightly too rough around the edges and savage. Also get on well with the Salamanders and Blood Angels. Rubbed the wrong way by hyper-materialistic legions, like the Iron Warriors or Ultramarines. Very close with the Khan, as much as anyone was at least.
>Describe some of your legion's most memorable victories/defeats
Conquered an entire inhabited asteroid belt in just under thirty two hours through rapid mobilization and well executed boarding actions. Were once pinned down by huge dust storms on an extremely tidal planet, and after their rapid deployment tactics failed they were cut off and ambushed.
cont.
>>53132173
>Leman Russ has been told that you and your legion are going to Chaos. Now his fleet is in your home planet's orbit. What do?
They'd probably believe their beliefs have been noticed and are being forced to comply. Would attempt to acquiesce and submit. If that failed, attack before they can land, boarding their ships and landing craft while they are in transit. Keep on the move and try to attack erratically to keep them guessing. Avoid pitch battles unless in close quarters breaching or with numerical superiority. Make use of the lack of solid land on the homeworld.
>what's the major defect in your chapter's geneseed or traditions?
Have a distinct sort of sailor faith they inherited from the Primarch's homeworld. Superstitions and slightly animist, they try to keep it low key because they want to follow the Imperial truth, but secretly struggle to come to grips with it. Believe in a Benthic goddess with many names, (sometimes called Tiamat, the Leviathan, Abyss, or Abzu) as the personification of the roiling, primordial sea, the dark, capricious void, and both destruction and creation. Represented as both a fish, a dragon, a serpent, and more alien creatures. They have many small quiet rituals they must perform and superstitions actions they undertake to appease her.
>what is your signature weapon, vehicle, or other wargear, and why?
Boarding craft and air transport. Single handed melee weapons, usually in the form of falcatas or cleavers, wielded alongside rapid fire bolt pistols.
>after the Heresy, what is your former Legion's major deviation from the Codex - or what unique gift does your dark god give your Legion, now?
Worships Chaos Undivided as the personification of Tiamat. Reptilian or fish-like mutations are common, including the ability to survive in the void or underwater. Wings or extra limbs are the most common overt mutations. cont.
>>53132327
>after the Heresy, what is your former Legion's major deviation from the Codex - or what unique gift does your dark god give your Legion, now? cont.
Very smooth sailing in the warp, and seemingly expedited travel. Use this to appear and raid, then disappear, with the sole intent of creating chaos and anarchy. Want all of reality to return to the primordial Chaotic soup they believe it originated from, and to return to the womb of Tiamat.
>what blandishments did Horus offer you to try to convince you to join?
The ability to practice their faith in peace, as well as connecting Chaos to Tiamat/the Leviathan to appeal to them.Anyone else want to take part? I found the two old /tg/ Heresies and wanted to see if we could cook up another.

Edition chosen due to grumpy's discussion on the ability of exiling spells. He posted an image here >>53117041 which I think is pretty interesting in terms of how Wizards deals with abilities and complexity. Though at the same time, I think it's pretty useless in debate with people who aren't bound by the same restrictions WotC has.
And an old card I have to fit the edition.
>>53120202
Counterspell edition huh? Here's one, and a legendary creature I wouldn't mind some critque on after it.
>>53120644
Wording on 2nd ability is funky but should work I think. Unfortunately doesn't stop stuff like future sight+sensei's divining top, but trying to word the ability to stop that was just madness.
"Player's can't activate abilities of permanents that share a name of a permanent that has already activated an ability this turn." was the best I could come up with. I think this one is better overall. Stops you from infinite Prodigal Pyromancer-ing your opponents and has some of that white tax/denial flavor too
Is Fulgrim the worst primarch?

Don't like it don't buy it. There's a shit ton of other miniature manufacturers you could be supporting and using their products to play your games outside of a tournament.
You could even play a different game or genre such as historicals or warpath.

You would pay $82 for 10 assault marines?

And "/tg/" will advocate against digital wargaming or other cheaper alternatives, because miniatures are a craftsman's hobby.

They don't really deserve all the shit they get. Also I guess a space wolf thread
>>53158171
Because their lore was raped. Old space wolves were vikings in space who had a desire to protect civilians, fought bravely, and knew how to have a good time.
New space wolves are written like furry larpers who just go "dude wolves lmao" and act like shameful faggots.
>>53158171
Because of the excessive amount of "Wolf Lord Wolfen Wolfsson of Wolved Wolven Wolf" they've been getting lately.
Also, because Thousand Sons players are jealous and bitter assholes over the fact that even their Primarch can't beat the Rout.
