Is MBTI legit?

It's bullshit
People answer based on how they perceive themselves and then act surprised when the results match how they perceieve themselves.

people cannot be simplified into 16 personality types
>>
>>7658103
how about just googling it instead of making pointless threads?

here's the 30s work you could have done yourself OP:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myers%E2%80%93Briggs_Type_Indicator#Reliability

>The test-retest reliability of the MBTI tends to be low. Large numbers of people (between 39% and 76% of respondents) obtain different type classifications when retaking the indicator after only five weeks

it's a horoscope for people who falsely think of themselves as intelligent/scientific.

What math does one need to know to fully understand all the cutting edge concepts of machine learning, to be able do do research in machine learning?

I'm talking about fields like kernel methods and neural networks with the recent boom on deep learning.

Probability theory, linear algebra, topology, and some amount of of differential equations. Really though you're better off studying machine learning itself, most of the content is baked into the methods of the field itself. At least in my opinion.

So exactly how will quantum computing change software, hardware and our IT society in general?

Like, how will quantum computers be better than current computers in terms of how advanced the software can be, and what applications will it have? Sorry if my question is retarded, obviously I'm not much of a /sci/entist
34 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Ive seen this question alot and every time the answer has been, 'they wont be better in general, you'll never play crysis on a quantum computer, they'll be good for some very specific kinds of computing tasks'
I dont really understand why, but thats come up every time ive seen it
>>
>>7657787
Theoretically quantum computers would be able to utilize non-deterministic algorithms to allow infinitely-parallel processing in order to solve an algorithm. You give it an algorithm (again, this is all still theoretical) and it will solve that algorithm with every infinite possible range of variables and give you only the range of variables that were able to pass through the algorithm.

While this kind of infinitely-parallel processing sounds like it would be wonderful for all the parallel graphics rendering in the like, remember that when rendering graphics and processing mass data, you're not simply performing the same tasks a million times over a large sample set, but you want a million different answers out of it. Quantum Computers can only give you one answer at a time.

That's not to say it would be completely useless. For one, it'd be a decryptor's dream. But the entire field of computer science is built upon deterministic computation and the realm of non-deterministic computation remains relatively unexplored except by a few mathematicians.
>>
>>7657806
Exactly. After Shor proposed his algorithm, there has been a flurry of papers how to use quantum computers for quantum chemistry. There is simply not enough concentrated effort on quantum algorithms yet to see what is and isn't possible.
A first step would be to build a scalable computer and execute simple calculations on it, just like how classical computers started.

Post math riddles! Here's one:

>You have two pieces of string that each take one hour to burn. They can burn from either end and you don't know what their lengths are or even if they are of equal length. They also burn at variable rates, that is, they burn fast for some periods and slower for others. Using just a lit match and these two strings, how could measure out 15 minutes of time?

For the sake of the riddle, you are a castaway on some island filled with faggots, and these faggots show up every 16 minutes to do nasty things to your butthole, so you should hide preferably one minute before they show up.

Is there a decent hologram technique that can create volume with some technique ? The problem with holograms is that they can only use light that has to be casted on a surface except for mid-air ionization technique which is shit.

Is there a way to block or occlude the light coming in mid-air to fake volume ? What are the latest the most modern hologram techniques ?

I'm not an expert on the subject by any means so forgive me if there are any flaws in my physics.

That being said I have considered the subject and I have formed a hypothesis that it might be able to create holograms using a technique wherein lasers are scattered at various points in 3d space by way of a non uniform electric field.

The basic idea is that a focused laser grid is projected into a region, and by very very precise manipulation of a magnetic field within that space you can cause the lasers to defocus at chosen points causing light scattering just as if they had reflected off of a solid surface. Obviously the main problem would be precision control of the em field itself. It would be very difficult to get the desired wavelength reflection so color would be a problem, also you would basically have to sculpt the field into the desired shape which might not even be possible to begin with, and even if it is creating fine details would be absurdly difficult. Basically it might work for geometric shapes, but images like a human face might be out of the question

*simple* as in using only the basic algebraic operations, nth roots, logarithms, etc. and no transcendental numbers.

What do you think is more difficult, /sci/?

Get a native level in german or japanese or be really good with maths?

We see people learning new languages all time, but what about learning and acquiring that level of knowledge in math?

Does it takes the same effort? What do you think?

>>
>>7657082
Obviously different people are better at different things, but as a whole I would say math is harder for the average person. All people, no matter how bad at languages, can learn a language by putting in many hours of memorization and repetition. On the other hand, some people just really don't "get" math and for those select people memorizing formulas will never make them get a deep understanding of the subject-matter.

I don't even understand what they're trying to say.

They made an inductor with ten windings and an unspecified spacing, using Earth as a core. By what means is an electron forced out the end fast than the speed of causality? Are they implying that the wire can interact with itself via a magnetic field and therefore turn on the light faster than it would take light itself to travel ten times around the earth?

I don't understand why they would frame it that way, but be so ambiguous at the same time. That's coming from someone who doesn't even know how inductor capacitance works.

I was going to say "I found this picture on an unmentionable website" but decided it's not worth mentioning.

Reddit made some good points in their comments. Then again, it's a science sub so it's not really the worst place to go if you're on that site. Though I feel like reddit effectively killed Slashdot and sucked up a lot of it's users.

Alright sci prove you are smart. Your friend Aristo brought cards. On each card there is a letter on one side and a number on the other side. He lays the 4 cards shown in the picture infront of you and says: If theres a vowel on one side there is an even number on the other side. How many cards do you need to flip in order to know if he is telling the truth?
13 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Perhaps i should ask which ones and why
>>
>>7656954
2
"E" and "7"
"E" must be checked for an even number
"V" could have any number under these rules
"2" could have any letter under these rules
"7" must be checked for a non-vowel
All this assumes "On each card there is a letter on one side and a number on the other side" is know for certain, and isn't part of "is he telling the truth?"
>>
>>7656965
E
E to check an even number is on the other side

V, 2 and 7 are unimportant, since Aristo didn't say, vowels and even numbers are mutually exclusive.
In other words, he didn't state that a consonant can't have an even number on the other side. Only that a vowel will have an even number on the other side

Forgive me for my lack of knowledge on the subject. But can someone explain to me how a higgs boson could essentially eradicate the universe?

From the stuff that I've read the only thing left of the catastrophic unravelling of matter in this way would be hydrogen. Why hydrogen?

What would be left? Simply a black void of nothingness? Dark matter? It's hard for me to wrap my head around complete destruction of all matter.

>>
>>7656822
>But can someone explain to me how a higgs boson could essentially eradicate the universe?
No, because it can't.
>>
I don't know shit about the hydrogen.

But the higgs, quantum tunnels into the true vacuum from our meta-stable vacuum when our vacuum decays, a considerable time after total heat death. Creating a bubble of this true vacuum that either decays instantly or expands at light speed.

Or on the edge of tiny decaying primordial black holes, which probably don't exist.

>I believe that advances in both foundational and observational physics have conspired to show us that this assumption is wrong: that each observer lives in their own unique universe, that nothing beyond its boundary is real and that we must never speak of more than one observer or universe at a time. If true, this implies a radical rethink not only of cosmology and fundamental physics but also of the nature of reality and of each observer’s place in the grand scheme of existence.

Solipsism is not possible to prove, and functionless even if you embrace it.

That's not to say thinking it through isn't very important, and doesn't expand your ability to consider all other avenues of thought, but nonetheless. Our observations of physics tend to be consistent between individuals.

People get real pissed, and very snotty when it comes to solipsism. It's usually because they're scared and can neither say, nor do shit about. It's there. It's gonna always be there. It can't be truly reconciled. And they don't want to deal.
