Ive seen this question alot and every time the answer has been, 'they wont be better in general, you'll never play crysis on a quantum computer, they'll be good for some very specific kinds of computing tasks'

Theoretically quantum computers would be able to utilize non-deterministic algorithms to allow infinitely-parallel processing in order to solve an algorithm. You give it an algorithm (again, this is all still theoretical) and it will solve that algorithm with every infinite possible range of variables and give you only the range of variables that were able to pass through the algorithm.

While this kind of infinitely-parallel processing sounds like it would be wonderful for all the parallel graphics rendering in the like, remember that when rendering graphics and processing mass data, you're not simply performing the same tasks a million times over a large sample set, but you want a million different answers out of it. Quantum Computers can only give you one answer at a time.

That's not to say it would be completely useless. For one, it'd be a decryptor's dream. But the entire field of computer science is built upon deterministic computation and the realm of non-deterministic computation remains relatively unexplored except by a few mathematicians.

Exactly. After Shor proposed his algorithm, there has been a flurry of papers how to use quantum computers for quantum chemistry. There is simply not enough concentrated effort on quantum algorithms yet to see what is and isn't possible.
A first step would be to build a scalable computer and execute simple calculations on it, just like how classical computers started.

I'm not an expert on the subject by any means so forgive me if there are any flaws in my physics.

That being said I have considered the subject and I have formed a hypothesis that it might be able to create holograms using a technique wherein lasers are scattered at various points in 3d space by way of a non uniform electric field.

The basic idea is that a focused laser grid is projected into a region, and by very very precise manipulation of a magnetic field within that space you can cause the lasers to defocus at chosen points causing light scattering just as if they had reflected off of a solid surface. Obviously the main problem would be precision control of the em field itself. It would be very difficult to get the desired wavelength reflection so color would be a problem, also you would basically have to sculpt the field into the desired shape which might not even be possible to begin with, and even if it is creating fine details would be absurdly difficult. Basically it might work for geometric shapes, but images like a human face might be out of the question

Obviously different people are better at different things, but as a whole I would say math is harder for the average person. All people, no matter how bad at languages, can learn a language by putting in many hours of memorization and repetition. On the other hand, some people just really don't "get" math and for those select people memorizing formulas will never make them get a deep understanding of the subject-matter.

I don't even understand what they're trying to say.

They made an inductor with ten windings and an unspecified spacing, using Earth as a core. By what means is an electron forced out the end fast than the speed of causality? Are they implying that the wire can interact with itself via a magnetic field and therefore turn on the light faster than it would take light itself to travel ten times around the earth?

I don't understand why they would frame it that way, but be so ambiguous at the same time. That's coming from someone who doesn't even know how inductor capacitance works.

I was going to say "I found this picture on an unmentionable website" but decided it's not worth mentioning.

Reddit made some good points in their comments. Then again, it's a science sub so it's not really the worst place to go if you're on that site. Though I feel like reddit effectively killed Slashdot and sucked up a lot of it's users.
